I always hear that keeping a big fish is actually good because when a fish grows it starts eating smaller fish, I've kept a few big trout from my pond and I've noticed a rise in the population of trout and all other fish, etc.

Carp is one of the most common species that are ruining our lakes and damns and they consume so much of the natural food supplies for other fish. You're a fool if you caught a carp and put it back. Native Australian catch these carps and let it die on the shore...they are pest to the natural waterways and lakes. Keep in mind next time you catch one.
