  • To me, this piece is almost mystical in that it seems to almost ramble from one section to another, yet there is a cohesiveness I don't actually understand. I would think that makes it especially challenging to perform.

This performance offers wonderful clarity - a lot of which comes through some meticulous pacing. Totally Brilliant!

  • @richxx4 I absolutley agree with you,it does almost ramble from one thing to another,it is Sibelius in his deepest thoughts, yes challenging indeed,I once read that Karajan had said that it was this work that made him the most exhausted,he said,"that the degree of concentration needed is so intense, there is no let up from begining to end,and in one prolonged movement,it is the most exausting in all music."

this perfomance by Mark Elder is wonderful, completley satisfying.

  • is this the whole piece? just 24 min?

  • @reticent17 yes

  • @reticent17 Yep. In fact it's normally only 20 to 22 minutes.

  • Thanks for this posting. Possibly the finest symphony ever, no bombast, no spectacular finale, just pure music of the highest order.
