she needs glow plugs . its easy to put new ones in . its like changing spark plugs in a gas rig. 500.000. thats not worn out. try 800.000. i just redone my 1985 ford w a remaned 1993 7.3 ats turbo. and a rebuilt auto tranny . cost was 6500 but well worth every dime.
@guppyelf gotta be carful about remans, my dad got engine after engine from reviva and the heads were cracked or the jacket was loose in the block. he ended up getting an engine out of the junk yard and it's still ticking away.
@turtlemann14 yea .. a lot of good folks get ripped off by buying remaned parts from autozone or checker/oreilys, those guys send all there parts to mexico to be remaned. those guys dont know crap about diesels , i bought one from pensicola diesels . it was remaned here, it has a two year warranty.
@guppyelf Ive got an ats turbo on my 7.3idi, with 1700psi pump 1400psi injectors 8degrees advanced, and red light racing it can take a 5.4 f150. Have you dynoed yours?
Basically let me clear this up about the video. The truck has over 500,000 miles. It only will start when the engine temp is over 160. It will not crank with out starting fluid no matter what unless it has been running and the temp is up. But you are correct your are not suppose to use starting fluid on a idi ( indirect injection) because the glow plug and fuel are in a pre-cup before it enters the engine. So if u use too much starting fluid with glow plugs it will blow the pre-cup out of
@diesel85idi ive got the same pick up with 300k on it and it came with a turbo from the factory. (we had ford install it) and it sat for about 5 years and last week i charged the batteries, started and now im driving it everyday
@diesel85idi My gramma has 7.3 idi with 800,000 miles, but it had bearings n rings at 300,000. Its the same way, if its cold outside it better be plugged in, but once warm it'll still burn tires, god bless 21.5:1 compression ratio! Thats a beautiful truck, rebuild a 7.3 idi and drop it in there when the 6.9 gives up the ghost?
@TurboIDI i am actually in the process of building a 7.3 idi for the truck hope to have it going soon . I may eventually pull this old 6.9 down and put rings and bearings in it just to do it
@diesel85idi not even close i have one that had 800.000. yes it used oil in the end and yes maybe that was to long but it lasted that long.. the old 6.9 . 7.3 had long lives . if you took care of them ..
@XJproto its an idi it can handle starting fluid beside the only thing it would do is wreck ur glow plugs but if ur usein starting fluid to start it im guessin the glow plugs are already shot
I specialized in diesel engines with a side course during my apprentice training way back. Starter fluid is a big safety "No no". it may cause top end damage. The spray is too readily flamable, it'll detonate (Not burn) WELL before the fuel should, and could cause engine failure.
I've seen guys come into the shop with old 2 stroke diesel trucks that started running backwards from detonating starter fluid, causing savage damage.
@XJproto the guys that came in to ur shop are idiots they sprayed the starting fluid in while the glow plugs were on which caused premature detination which will cause the engine to turn backwards,
i have a 7.3 idi and i live in north dakota and wen it 40 below and ur glow plug dont work that quick shot of starting fluid gives it the boost it needs and also its about proper use of it on the can it says a 2 to 3 sec shot i personally dont use more than a
@XJproto (continued)1 sec shot if it doesnt start then i heat the engine with a heater also u make sure ur glow pluggs arnt on i have a push button for my glow plugs so i have the control of them
Regardless of your glowplugs functioning or not, the heat created by the higher compression of a diesel engine can cause the spray to detonate rather than burn. In simple terms this is because of the agent being sprayed into the intake has a lower tolerance to heat than diesel fuel, which makes it burn, BEFORE it should which can cause detonation
Even without glowplugs, the heat created by compression alone can cause detonation, engine failure or burns from intake backfire
I'm a training diesel technician, not a back yard guy. I'm not trying to troll you out. One thing that was drilled into our heads in training was is NOT to use starting fluid. If you reach for a can of that stuff, something is not functioning right.
My 6.9 will start no problem in -40 Alberta oil sands weather no problem without spray, because everything is in working order.
Teachers telling us not to use it and personal stories should show that it's dangerous
i just bought my first truck and its a 83 6.9 with the extended cab it was sitin for 5 years, fixed it and i LOVE IT !!! nice truck man!
