  • Sorry Marina,

There are 13 lunar cycles in a year!!

That's also why there are 13 witches in a proper coven.

  • @mosihasteen and 13 is an unlucky number because there are 13 steps to the gallows noose.

  • @dragontooth81 . . .and 13 loops in the noose itself - if it's tied properly.

  • gay

  • I love how it's more about hotness and sex than learning words...

  • u are the pinnacle of beauty

  • She is so very adorable!

    I am her new student.

She and Ask a Ninja should do a webisode.

Because vocabulary and deadly martial arts go well together :D

  • Yeah and she should hook up with mellie d or even kotecky and mcmillian.

  • I am listening to you but all the words are going in one ear and out the other....

  • This is sad...

  • sos la mujer mas bonita del mundo...ojala la vida me de la bienaventuranza de concerte y poder abandonarme en ese pedazo de cielo que refleja tu mirada..

  • One of the best Swedish speakers I´ve ever known was actually a Russian girl , trained at the Academy in Leningrad/ Petersburg . She had the best Swedish vocabulary I´ve ever come across .

I still miss her & love her . / Pete

  • Well the word 'gay' used to mean "happy" but now it means homsexual. That's quite a migration from the original meaning wouldn't you agree my love?

  • Gays are renowned for their flamboyance and theatricality (i.e. over the top happiness) - so it seems logical for the word gay to mean homosexual.

  • watch amero

  • 12 months in a year, but what's up with a bakers dozen?

  • surely you've heard that old story...in the olden times there were really strict penalaties for the slightest crime. This included a strict guideline on the weight of a dozen loaves of bread, and if it was even slightly under, the baker would get their hands chopped off or something. So they used to throw in an extra loaf to make sure it surpassed the minimum weight.

  • There are a lot of euphemisms such at retarded, moron, handicapped, disabled, etc. that have changed over time. Some become more acceptable (e.g. suck or scumbag) and some have become less acceptable over time.

  • The words "terrific" and "awesome" have always had similar meanings, but originally they meant "causes fear".

  • 2 dolla sucky sucky

  • I believe Hussy used to mean Housewife. Is that true? If so, why the negative connotation today?

  • Patronising has an interesting past. The word has complterely changed in meaning from it's roots.

  • Sorry to be advocatus diaboli, but I thought that candidate came from candidatus meaning clothed in white, a reference to the Roman politicians habit of covering their togas in white chalk when making speeches so that they stood out from the crowd. see also candidum=whitish colour candidus=shining white and candeo=to shine/glitter/be shining white.

  • the word generic. Slang use has flip-flopped the meaning.

  • Thanks to WHATTHEBUCK show for introducing me to you. Subscribed!

  • eu gostaria de ter amusica do atila

  • WHAT DOES BLOW JOB MEAN?

  • what's the name of the song at the beginning and end of the video?

  • Intriguing as always...Great work, looking forward to the next "lesson"!

  • A candidate who is clear, sincere, free of biased, and impartial? Yeah right since when?

  • wow i wish she worked at my school

  • 10 can be divided by 1 as well as 2, 5 and 10. There is 13 Luna cycles in a year not 12. There were 12 disciples which is why we have a jury of 12.

Twelve is also used because the base of 1, 2 3 4... Astrology has 3 x 4 x 2 categories... Sorry you lost me on this one. But I remain you adorable fan. Spasibo

  • are*

  • 10 can't really be divided by 1. Mathematically, sure, but you didn't actually divide it. Like, if you have 10 apples, you don't divide it by 1 to get 10 apples. You just take 10 apples. Anyways, her point was that you can split 12 more ways then 10, so it is more practical.

  • Companion as changed over time... you figure it out.

  • I cn think about Mouse, but is not really changed, now it has 2 meaning. You know the computer oen and the vermin.

  • and lets not forget about the word 'GAY'

Cute BOLLYWOOD shirt, Marina! I still wish I owned the other ring I see on your hand! Heh, heh, heh!

I know you focus on word origins, but what about phrase origins as well: e.g. "Your're pulling my leg". Where does THAT come from?

  • Hotforwords,

My son asked me the other day why people say "lucky" and where it got it's meaning. I had heard it had it's root origin in "Lucifer" is this true?

    Thanks

  • From a story my grandfather told someone else, the word "awful" has drastically changed its meaning, which it used to mean full of awe. Actually, I'd like to know how it changed from that to its current meaning.

  • As well as "awesome."

  • Homeboy

It once refered to country bumpkins that live their entire lives in one town or farm.

Now it referes to do-rag wearing hood rats.

  • kinda the same thing conceptually...

  • hmm... i got 2

    Gay

    Kiss (aparently)

  • In response to word changes question

Faggot went from a unit of wood measurement to a pejorative for Homosexual.

Ass went from being a donkey to an anal orifice (which was formerly arse).

Fornication was origonally an architectural structure (an arch) but later refers to sex.

  • looks cute, love the shirt, um.. care about the roots? love ya lessons.. whatever it maybe.. lol .. power to female teachers!

  • haha, combining a hot girl with education. Nice take on it :D

  • the def of terrorism has changed over the years

  • wow that was dum

  • woooow.... yer i am amazed that we are still surviving with such idiot :P

  • the number 12 is like a history test and the meaning of life

  • the candidates running for local political positions in ancient roman times are said to have been called 'candidates' because they wore bleached white togas, and their dress became synonymous with their names. i remember this from latin in year 9 :)

  • Lets see, Gay has already been said.

Aweful, used to mean full of awe, now is generally means bad things

  • My dear: "Hot For Words". The word is,apothecary

  • The word gay has changed VERY drastically over the years, do that.

  • I have one Marina, how about

Real Estate.. what makes it real? and why do hole in the walls get to be lumped into Estate's?

  • Hi HotForWords!

No pun intended. One word that has change drastically is the word "Gay" Why did the meaning of the word change so much? Also do the word "lesbian" Why is Gay only referred to male/male and lesbians are female/female?

  • how about the word "mamacita" obviously is spanish but it has a meaning hope you can find it???

  • Regarding words that have changed their meaning, how about the word "Gay"

From happy to a positive slang for homosexuals to a negative word in general it's flipped from good to bad, and from plutonic to sexual.

  • wtf who marked this negative. If you watch the video he posted a real comment and it's not offensive.

  • i get fooled by your icon every time.

  • Why didn't any of my teachers look like this :(

  • You are not dressed as before...(Disappointed)

No Offense: But it actually reminded me of the word "BooB" could you find out where it actually come from?

  • Wouldn't the 'clothed in white' have something to do with the ritual clothing of the Roman Senate?

  • i like your shirt.

  • cool shirt.

  • Where is your accent from?

  • Hey babe u r gorgeous

  • I still wanna know about "toast" :(

  • i love your videos, and your accent is just lovely (L)

  • There are actually 13 lunar cycles in a year.

  • You look better than ever in this video.

    What did you do?

  • Usually, I assume hotforwords writes her own scripts. But not this time. No offense to your character or anything, but I don't think you had any idea what you were talking about in this video as far as candidate is concerned. Nice try though.

  • boylebongo, what do you mean? I told you where the word candidate came from.. what did I not know?

  • 3:36, love your eyes.

I liked this one, it's timely. How about one on Hannukah, or Holiday (and how it became to Europeans a "vacation" as Americans would call it), or "Season's Greetings"? THere's also the whole "Santa Claus" story which your viewers would find fascinating.

  • i want to know something: why is chili called chili if it is served hot? thanks :)

  • where are you from?

  • She is from her mommy's tummy.

  • According to Shakespeare's Words: A Glossary, the word "thee," used to be the informal mode of address and the word "the" used to be the formal mode of address. These are two words that switched meanings.

  • Answer to 2:32

Yeah all candidates are pure starting with Richard Nixon the god of HONESTY

  • It was once said that anyone who aspires to political office is inherently unfit for the job.

  • mariana this video wasn't good.:( ur others are better. u didn't find a good explantion for candidate

  • drankthemilkup2, I get a lot of requests for certain words.. and words like candidate simply mean "dressed in white". Not very interesting, so I go off on a tangent and see that the root candid means pure, unbiased, etc... So then I add a little humor as there is no more history. I could just completely ignore words with not much history.. or I can try to make a short but *hopefully* humorous video. What do you feel that I should do?

  • I thought it was interesting that it's totally opposite of what we have come to expect from candidates/politicans

  • Ivana Fuckalot...Sorry I couldn't resist saying that... heh (it's a joke people)

You're beautiful HotForWords. I always enjoy your videos.

  • Wow you look gorgeous in this one

  • I think the whole 'dressed in white' thing came from Roman men wearing a white toga when they were running for the Senate. Can you give me the origin of the word 'dollar'?

  • Wife used to mean any woman, and a mistress was one's wife.

  • i guess we dont have any candidates in america

  • Staying political...If Pro is good and con is bad...and Progress is good, is Congress bad?

  • how?

  • Hey Marina,

I like the "Marina-show". Very nice job.

Ps: Happy Birthday, and good luck.

  • Anxious. Now it's used by many to mean eager, as in "I'm anxious to see Marina's next video." Originally, it meant worried, uneasy or nervous.

  • gay is also one too.

  • The word Faggot, used to mean pile of sticks, now its basically just an insult to gay people. LAWLLLL

  • Hello Marina

Another terrific job, I just subscribed to your podcast on my I-Phone, that is awesome Baby !

    Thank You ! Smiles -Daniel

  • Thanks manostamina!

  • "Discrimination"

Used to mean: choosing wisely between alternatives

    Now means: prejudice.

    "Taboo"

Used to mean: forbidden, because it is sacred.

Now means: forbidden, because it is profane.

  • hemingway wouldve bedded her and forgotten this woman without noting her verbal intellect.hmmm yes indeed

  • "internet" was most commonly know as the lining inside bathing suits, the mesh stuff to keep male anatomy from floating around haha. And now look! If the meaning didn't change...we'd be watching your videos inside my bathing suit

  • Ok, that was disturbing.

  • The word that has changed meaning drastically over the years...? Hmmm... "liberal"! :)

  • Another wonderful lesson, Marina - thank you! BTW - Cool ending to the song at the end of the video. As a musician I often wondered where your theme song was going - it just kind of faded off before.

Might I be so bold as to request the origins of the word, "Music"? I would really like to know where that word comes from. Thanks and have a lovely day!

  • 'candidate' comes from the american word

'can' which means 'tin', the english

word 'did' which means 'do', and the

the geek word 'ate' which means 'eat'

    therefore the word 'candidate' means

'someone who has been eating canned

goods in the past' that's all of us x)

  • MUCH better than my explanation badjaeaux! Kudos to you :-)

  • THANK you Marina i did not expect a reply

from someone as famous as you :) not to

mention as hot and attractive x) -- Mark

  • Didn't the word "twelve" was popularised by the Romans?

  • Hey Marina! Candidus has the accent on the first 'a' and not not on the 'i' :-)

  • Doesn't that depend on the style of Latin, or am I wrong?

  • Pkk Terör örgütünün Youtube da yayinlanan her türlü propoganda videolarini sildirmek amaci ile "FLAG" yapmak icin bir kampanya baslatilmistir. Bütün dünyaya bunlarin bir terör örgütü oldugunu kabul ettirmek her TÜRK evladinin sehit askerlerimize vefa borcudur. lütfen bu yaziyi kopyalayip her video ya cevap yaziniz. Haydi TÜRKIYEM ileri!

  • "Cool"

"Gay" are two words that come to mind that have changed meanings over the last few decades.

Just an aside, the number "12" also has Biblical inference - it is found in the Bible with reference to organizational arrangements that are divinely appointed (for example, the 12 Tribes of Israel.) There are several times that the number 12 is used in the Bible as a multiple (144,000 in Revelation, etc.)

    Thanks for your hard work!

  • White is symbolic; it also refers to the Roman toga. As early as the fifth century B.C., the toga was considered a sign of a Roman citizen. It was denied to foreigners, poor and banished Romans. It was worn as a badge of office. Augustus, seeing a meeting of citizens sans toga, quoted Virgil, "Romans, lords of the world, the race that wears the toga," gave the order that no one was to appear in the Forum or Circus sans toga.

  • A candidate the is literally a citizen and symbolically pure.

  • ...which brings an interesting discussion about the meaning of canvassing (what candidates do for elections) and the subject of a (white, clear, blank) canvas?

  • Well at the risk of sounding repetitive I would have to mention wood as being at least one word that has changed meaning completely ;)

    Hehe..

  • i love you marinaaa!!!

  • hey Marina, as always *****!! :)

hmmm..what about COMMON? as in "low class" (commoner), "lowest common denominator" in math or "common sense"

  • hotforwords, where are u from?

  • She is Russian dumb shit

  • Ne nice Climbatizecombat :-)

  • White is only symbolical

  • About words that have changed there meanings I think gay would be an obvious example. Unless I'm mistaken.

  • Modern candidates wear black suits

  • I like your dress today

  • gay

  • Hey teacher! Kicesie wants to know how we got the term "birds and the bees"? She's doing a vlog on sex and I suggested that she write to you in this regard. Thanks for your help.

  • At the end of the video, did anyone notice her tits grow like 10x their original size?

  • how about the word defenestrate

  • Many words start off as meaning one thing and throughout time their meanings change. Many times, the word starts off being used to mean something else and is considered slang. The meanings of words can change many times throughout the years, which can lead to a word having multiple definitions at times.

  • Croon has flipped around a bit. The story of the avocado is pretty amusing. Jukebox has an interesting origin story.

  • good vid.

    man I'm tired.

  • one word that has drastically changed over time is the word gay...from implying or meaning something happy to meaning homosexual male and now changing into something wierd (as used in youtube)"that's gay" to comment on something not understood or not liked.

  • lolz, well I think gay people are Happy =D

  • Wow, you finally found a way to close the loop in your theme music. ;)

  • *****

    Another mystery solved..

    ;)

  • If someone can't see, they're blind and if someone cant hear, they're deaf, so what do you call people who can't smell or taste?

What ever happened to an E grade? We have A,B,C,D,F but no E.

Why is the time of day with the slowest traffic called rush hour?

Why do most cars have speedometers that go up to at least 130 when you legally can't go that fast on any road?

  • In Australia we don't have an "F" grade. We have A,B,C,D,E. But no "F".

I think the reason in Australia is because "F" stands for "Fail." and some dupe thinks it's too harsh. In America, I think you don't have "E" because "F" Means "Fail"

  • Oh and btw.. When did E grade disappear? I got an E for my Design and Technology class at school. :)
