@photobyjewell1987 This was a DIY Beauty dish made out of a CD Case and a plastic planter bowl from the local hardware store. The design is from photographer David Tejada. Google his name and beauty dish and you'll find the link on how to make one
@Keithphotorama That's an Expodisc. I commonly use them to take a custom White Balance when working on mixed lighting situations. You can find them at most camera store and online retailers.
@bigbs4 I was surprised too!! Such a terrible lens on a beautiful body.. I replaced mine with the Sigma 18-50mm 2.8.. then turned the front element on the 18-55mm upside down.. get some sweet macro out of it now.. although, it does tend to spend most of its life in a box.. :( poor lens..
Great video! It looked like you had a blast and the photos looked awesome. Thanks for explaining how you set things up, it really helps beginners like myself.
Great video! It looked like you had a blast and the photos looked awesome. Thanks for explaining how you set things up, it really helps beginners like myself.
@knockout43 I build mine based on Colorado photographer David Tejada's design. It is fitted for an Nikon SB-800, but if you use some ingenuity, you can make one for whatever flash you want. Google "David Tejada Beauty Dish"
Great video! I am upgrading to a 60d (for video as welll) I was curious as to the additional lens. I am looking to purchase the Sigma 24-70 f 2.8or the Sigma 70-200mm f/2.8 II. I currently have a 50mm 2.8 (no zoom), which I love, but in a cramped studio like mine, it is a pain! My focus is wedding and boudoir photography, with more of a dramatic fashion edge. Can you advice me on a quality lens that would give me a sharp image and work well in a very small space for under $900? Thanks.
There is a lot of personal opinion when it comes to choosing lenses. Any lens that is "considered" pro glass will have faster focusing, the ability to maintain a constant aperture throughout the entire zoom range, be made of metal or better material than the cheap plastic, and most importantly, be made of better glass that is emission dispersing, cutting down on aberation and fringing.
In my own experiences, I've had bad luck with 3rd party lenes such as sigma, tamaron, quantaray, etc. Hence why your Sigma 70-200 costs half the price of a Canon 70-200.
I recommend saving your money till you can buy a true Canon L USA lens.
I also would rent the lenses from your local camera shop or borrowlenses. com and try them out before you fork out 900 bucks. Kenrockwell . com has good reviews and visual comparisons too.
if in the david tejada's design you don;t get the mirror inside you can always blow a baloon, cover it with paper machee. then you will get a sphere, cut it half and stick alluminium foil and you have your own made mirror. OR you can just stack a CD at the box's end even a golden CD would be great.
That's a great idea! I'm curious to see those of you out there who would be willing to try this. I am not craft-oriented enough to do the paper route. Mine is a simple CD and convex mirror. I would try different CD case sizes and different bowl sizes and do some test shooting to compare the results.
I use "convertible" umbrellas so I can use the same umbrella as a reflective umbrella or take the black/silver cover off and use it as a white shoot-through umbrella. I cannot use the silver alone for the ribs of the umbrella are sewn to the white portion.
Their is much controversy and opinions between on shoot through vs. reflective is better. I believe none is better than the other. Both have their pros and cons and I use both depending on the subject and shooting situation.
So, you have brought home shutter speed and apperture settings, but......ISO?? I've always tried to use the lowest ISO possible when doing fashion/glam photography unless I specifically want a grainy look. To me ISO has always been the 3rd part of the lighting enviornment which rarely gets any discussion. Your thoughts for both strobist and natural light?
That's a big question I receive a lot. It depends on what you are going for whether you desire to be a hobbiest or professional. Pro Glass is worth is weight in gold for those who want the highest quality image, a constant aperture during zooming, and sturdy material that will hold up to day to day use. But remember YOU the photographer, take the image, not the camera, not the lens. I recommend a nice 50mm 1.8 or 1.4. They are not expensive and are tack sharp
You can start watching at 1:58 for the juice, that is ofcourse if you've already seen an old house and some models getting their make up done.

@bigbs4
thank you very much sir,
for your reply I was just confused between flexibility vs quality.
I mean I can go for a ""35mm 1.8, 50mm 1.8, 85mm 1.8."" OR for a ""Sigma 70-200 f/2.8 II"".
I am really confused that what would be the best, if I want to shoot editorial stuff (white seamless & location back-lit )
many say that my compositions will become lazy and boring if I opt for a zoom lens.
Please help, I am not a gear head, but investing $800 is not a small thing for me.

would you be kind enough to post a tutorial or a link to the tutorial that helped you make yours?

The Beauty Dish is of David Tejada's design which was featured on the Strobist Blog a few years back.
YouTube doesn't allow posting of links, so just google "David Tejada Beauty Dish" and it will take you right to it
