"The one constant through all the years ray, has been baseball. America has rolled by like an army of steam rollers. It's been erased like a black board, rebuilt and erased again. Oh people will come Ray, people will most definitely come." I love baseball

"This field this game: it's a part of our past Ray. It reminds of all that once was good, and it could be again. Oh, people will come Ray. People will most definitely come." One of the most powerful lines in any movie to have ever been made.
to 0666617 - yes of course the film makers saw what you were saying but took no notice of you because you're an nobody anyway. just keep watching films and decompose.
What did he mean by the blackboard analogy? I'm guessing he means that baseball falls into and out of popularity? Am I right? Basketball and Football are more popular than baseball now.
"It's only $20 per person." I know that's not much money for what the people get in exchange, but it made the final scene, with the line of cars heading towards the field, somewhat cynical to me.
I agree with Nighthawk186- this may not have been from a real game or player, but in my book it ranks right up there with
Lou Gehrig's farewell.
If Cooperstown doesn't already have a copy preserved, they should get one.
On a side note, I also love the part where one player says, "Yeah, Ty Cob asked if he could play, but then we remembered he was a mean cuss, so we told him he could stick it!"
"The one constant through all the years Ray has been baseball"...
This is speech gives me chills everytime I've seen it. When we saw this at the theater I was 12 and I knew then that this speech was something people would still be talking about years later.
It was quite possibly one of the greatest speeches in movie history. He sums up America and the game in less than 2 minutes but what a 2 minutes it is...
Clint Eastwood knows that Morgan Freeman has a good chemistry with him and Freeman has supported him in several of his hits. James Earl Jones has a good chemistry with Kosner, and its too bad they didn't work in more films together. Kosner is quiet thinking, while Jones is a thinker, but bold. Burt Lancaster also adding to this team work of actors in this film. Everyone had a chemistry and went well together. Didn't the film makers see this?
i am a big white sox fan. just across from the ball park are the 100 year old i.i.t. buildings. reminds me of the endurance of the game. america has been rebuilt again.
Between this scene, the "Dad, do you wanna have a catch" scene, and the "4th of July night game" scene with Ray Charles singing America in The Sandlot defines the true greatness and spirit of baseball and this country. No matter how young or old we are these 3 scenes really touches the hearts of practically every man in this country.
No matter how many scandals there are, how many rotten people are there, people will come to Baseball. The willingness to forgive and remember the memories. Ebbets Field, Wrigely, Fenway. The smell of grass, roasted peanuts, and the thrill of a 1 run game in the bottom of the ninth.
Baseball is, as James Earl Jones eloquently states, what we wish America could and would be. Unitus, Nameth, and Jordan are great sports figures. But never will come close to Ruth, Gherig, or Jackie Robinson.
Somewhere between childhood memories of playing catch or running bases, and seeing your favorite player come through in the clutch, (Fisk, Luzinski, Thomas), this scene still gets me every time. The older I get, the more I look forward to Spring.
Baseball is a spiritual game. It is the only sport where the player ens up in the same place he began. It's a journey FROM home (our heavenly Father) TO home, like "going home" to heaven, and running the bases is our earthly journey.
this scene alone defines America and baseball. It inspires me more than any other monologue. this video goes to show what baseball means to America. its the only video I've ever seen that has a full 5 star rating.
I too have tears EVERY time I watch this movie. If you EVER get a chance to go to the farm site in Dyersville, Iowa GO!!! It is like walking into another world and another time. "It reminds us, of all that once was good, & could be again..."
I agree, there is something special about this movie. Every male, who has picked up a baseball or played catch with their dad has a special place for this movie. My favorite times growing up was playing catch with my dad. I just can't wait til I have a son of my own to play catch with, something to pass on.
I was very surprised that with all the great acting, no one recieved an award for it that I could see. I can't recall james earl jones in a better performance as the grouchy genius writer who becomes mild mannered because of his love of baseball.
I think this is a movie which touches all guys, its bizarre how we all have the same feelings towards our fathers...none of us want to be like him, yet we all want to be like him...
Perhaps the best monologue about sports (or anything, really) in the history of American cinema. Perfect actor to deliver it as well. It's said that this monologue is the reason James Earl Jones took the part.
This scene makes me cry everytime I see it. I'm alot like Ray. I grew up and went wild and ignored my family and loved ones. I'm 24 now and moving 700 miles away from home and my Dad is 62 and I'm such a failure compared to him. I'd give anything in the world to go back to being 14 and just play catch with my Dad again and be a good kid. Sighs
I agree with Catbox. CALL YOUR DAD. No one's a "failure" at 24, guy. If your family loves you - and they likely do - you cannot let that connection die because you're in the doldrums. And if it takes watching this film again to remind you, so be it.
Rick, call your dad TODAY. Don't wait. My dad died the year before this movie came out. I would give all I have to be able to call him, or have a catch. PLEASE call him.

Hmmm..what a tough text to act in film.
It sounds more fit for a theatre play, very
prosaic. The actor did his best to make it sound natural, but it could as been as well a mage talking in Lord Of The Rings.
