I thought so too, but then I listened closely a few times and the part after out/bout definitely sounds more like "with" than "when," which makes sense with the posted version of the lyrics.

Also, other lyrics sites have it down as "a brief bout" (although that isn't necessarily a guarantee of correctness - for example, in the song Cells by The Servant, pretty much every site spells "en masse" as "on mass"...the former of which makes perfect sense and the latter not much sense at all).
