I would agree to putting an Olds or Chevy V8 in it because the 4.9 Litre(301) was really a piece of garbage.I had one in a 77 Grand Prix where the head gasket went and turned the coolant system into a frothy mess!
When i was growing up during the 1980's cars like this ruled the road, and had style unlike the econo shitboxes made today. I am thankful having to experience what a real car looks like! I remember my brother saying back then that the 301's were junk like other posters said. I always liked the Pontiac's styling.
Not bad, not bad at all. You presented this very wel. I enjoyed watching it, looking forward to more videos from you. I am just getting started with with creating video content and it is not as easy as it looks... well... its not as easy as YOU make it look. Nice work.

I've posted a couple of times, but I've had 2 Bonnevilles and they are same only by name. I was 27 and got a black on black 2000 SSEi. Just a beautiful machine. My other Bonne was a 2004 Grey with Grey suede interior GXP with the detuned Cadillac Northstar V8. These are considered full size these days but I have to say I loved both. Every creature comfort and 10 more you want, tons of power, great looking, and room for 5. Both awesome for interstate cruising. I would like a 79 though.
ok, this is probably the nicest 79 Bonneville Safari wagons I've seen on the net. I never see them in person anymore. As far as snow performance, well I was only 7-8 years old when our family bought one. I have one question on yours, and it's beautiful. I really like the color combo and new must have been great in 1979. I am thinking the Safari, which was the top of line Bonneviile of the year, is do you have the build sheet? I am wondering if it came with wire wheel covers vs hub caps
My family's holiday hauler was a 1975 Buick Estate. It was a little bit more posh than the Pontiac, and had the clam shell tail gate. The rear seat was where my brother and I spend hours on long car trips. We felt like it was our own world, and best of all it was the maximum distance from the parental units. Somehow we managed well enough with just a couple of board games and a Mattel football game.
Good review. seeing these old rigs takes me back to so many family car trips from my childhood.
I also remember walking home from school one snowy day (live in SE Michigan) and, our driveway was on the slightest of angles. This RWD behemoth wouldn't even make it up that. My dad was out back of it pushing it. I was still living at home and bought a new 96 Trans Am and had to have him do the same thing when I tried to drive it in 8 inches of snow. Also some guy rear ended it. I remember hearing a huge "bam". The car didn't have a scratch on it. B-body beasts!
@vinsetta What were you Thinking?? These cars with RWD and GM Limited Slip would run rings around FWD cars nowdays with nothing more that a good set of snow tires ! MY neighbor broke the rear driveshaft on his 4WD Ford F350 plow truck and I pulled it out and UP out of our driveway..Better ground clearance than most any FWD cars...The only downer was gas mileage.especially with the 307 Oldsmobile with its constricted cross manifold exhaust...(The ultimate bottom of the Olds engine Lineage!!!)
My dad got my mom a new olive green on olive green 79 Bonneville Safari (exactly looked like Family Truckster) I was 7 at the time but I recall it had every option. In place of clock, fuel economy needle (clock above climate control) Climate control was auto with a temp wheel to adjust it, 8 track, wire wheel covers, power recline on passenger side, inside right side mirror control, full guages instead of idiot lights. No clue what motor but had to be Olds or Chevy being loaded. Loved it.
@JR1070 Fail? LOL..This is a 79.of FUCKING Course there not gonna have anything like that, these cars are allot more unique and better looking than any of this New SHIT!!.. LMAO Yeah like a 79 Pontiac is gonna have push button start
@jackzvid ok, first of all this car is from 1979, no oil "crysis" back then. And if you're going to dog out American cars at least know what the fuck you're talking about, and for God's sake use spell check. It's inefficient, not "un officiant" and crisis not "crysis". Dumbass.
american cars are all extremely un officiant a 4.9 litre v8 will have no more than 160 hp and has 80 mph on the dial. now look at japanese and german cars see how they can get that much hp out of a 2.0 litr 4 cyclider engine which is a lot easier on the fuel. i dont get american car makers there is an oil crysis and they are making cars like this even at the present day.
do you know whats funny? i bet those old wagons get the same or better fuel mileage than a minivan! If the pontiac doesnt then it needs an overdrive transmission.
301 inch pontiac vs a ford 302... id take the pontiac for durabilty and ride quality and the ford for better power and gas mileage that EFI and a 4speed transmission offer.
Not a bad looking Bonneville Safari, With some cleaning it would look really nice. I have a 79 Bonneville also, but just a regular sedan. I Got some videos of mine..
Now THAT's a REAL station wagon!!! Tank Tough!! What GM used to make!!! I really wish GM didn't kill Pontiac, What the HELL were they thinking!!!! Olds also? My uncle on my Dad's side has an '86 Parisienne which was the Canadian version of the Bonneville when it was full-sized and that Pontiac started selling in the States in '82 when the Bonneville was downsized to the Chevy Malibu platform, It still looks, runs & drives great!! He keeps it in pristine condition also.
The 301 was kind of a dog. Not overly durable or strong. I would be shocked if it put out more than 130 hp or so. Though, like most V8's, it had a little bit of torque.
I love watching your videos, and the most interesting ones are exactly like this, where you can see in detail the classic american cars so strange and different for a European
Nice shape, too bad it has the way underpowered Pontiac built 301, I'm surprised it still runs so well as those engines were built with very light castings and were sort of junky. The big GM B body wagons optioned with Chevy or Olds 350's or Olds 403's were better on power and the engines had a better reputation for longevity. We had a '78 Olds Custom Cruiser wagon with 403 that was sold in 1995 that was still running strong.
I never liked instrument panels that had nothing but "idiot lights" for vital functions, oil pressure, voltage, temp. Only a gas gauge and spedo. You never really knew what was going on until one of those red lights came on and then it was too late. I prefer real gauges.
This was the "soccer mom" vehicle back in day. Need a red Ferrari with Christy Brinkley riding next to it. lol. The reason why hp rating were low was because this was in the early days of emissions standards for cars. Hp ratings were dropped in a attempt to improve mileage.
a lot of people at my college drive expensive, German cars. One even has a Bentley. But honestly, this thing is more cooler. I'd love to pull up in one of these, that would make a statement.
@yellowcow13 aye the wood paneled country squire :) i had 2 of them back in the day. one was white with fake wood. other was grey had the wood thing too
I love these old big cars. I have a 1977 Caprice for many years. My dad bought it brand new with 6 miles on it. I sold it with 395,000 miles on it. Great car.
I love how I always hear great songs on the radio in your videos. This car is HUGE, would love to have one, though with either lower fuel prices or an efficient diesel.
wth, you get into a proper sports car and barely blip the throttle and then you get into a 30+ year old station wagon and you rev the piss out of it........
Yeah but the 1990 Crown Victoria underpinnings were also from 1979 with minor changes until 1992 when the body style changed but the Panther platform remained until today. Both wagons were ahead of their time when first released
I had a few Pontiac's with the 301cu motor. Great motor for the most part.....200K was not a problem for most but, every once in awhile I would here of a 301 that blew-up with low mileage.
i know what i'm getting for a first car (; haha im not kidding either, you could fit a fricken mattress in the back of the beast! (: and im not talking about that. >.> i'm actually talking about sleeping. haha
The 301 was a good motor.Although the emission and tunning required then lowered its hp.The 2.5 liter iron duke 4 cyl was this engine cut in half.Both cam out in 1976.The last true Pontiac motors. I grew up in a Bonneville sedan of this era.Our Bonneville was traded in on a 6000 LE wagon in 1985.

I think you should mention how much the cars that you review costs. Otherwise Good job, keep it up!

The Horsepower is...?
k0edby22 11 months ago
@k0edby22 This is the 301 Pontiac V8, so it has either 135 or 150 hp, depending on whether this is 2BBL or 4BBL.
Ometheon 11 months ago
@Ometheon 2BBL.
landyachtfan79 11 months ago
@Ometheon Thank you :)
And damn, that's really low Hp... but have a lot of torque...?
k0edby22 11 months ago
wth, you get into a proper sports car and barely blip the throttle and then you get into a 30+ year old station wagon and you rev the piss out of it........

That Safari was ahead of its time. The 1990 Ford looks just like it!
SuperSportSS 11 months ago
@SuperSportSS

Does the Country Squire have the same jump seat?
Goldenrod636 11 months ago
The 301 was a good motor.Although the emission and tunning required then lowered its hp.The 2.5 liter iron duke 4 cyl was this engine cut in half.Both cam out in 1976.The last true Pontiac motors. I grew up in a Bonneville sedan of this era.Our Bonneville was traded in on a 6000 LE wagon in 1985.

People used to drive these cars?
Goldenrod636 11 months ago
