I actually know this guy. These vids were part of a pitch to Expert village to demonstrate the series and were not supposed to go public. He's the first to admit that he's ENTIRELY SELF TAUGHtT and has no business teaching technique. That being said, these vids are several years old and his technique tone and intonation is significantly better.
i just turned 20 and i'm a piano player.. i've always loved the cello, its always been one of my favorite instruments, even though i don't play.. will it be hard for me as a beginner to learn? i guess im trying to say, is it too late for me to learn?
@DAVIDRUIZ09 Are you insane?.... You have the best start that you can possibly have for a late start on any musical instrument. Playing a piano for many years will help to develop your ear and teach you how to read the treble and bass clef. Your left hand has been playing on the same music clef as you will need to know for cello. I am sure it will be hard, like anything worthwhile but IT IS NEVER TO LATE TO LEARN! * I don't know how to play cello in practice..... yet.... only in theory*
digo por que estudio en el concervatorio hace un año, aprende un gran profesor graduado en el concervatoria nacional (argentina) y creo tocar mucho mejor que vos. Quiero decir, y la tecnica?, y la relajacion? y el sonido?
I completely agree with ondore88. These are all great videos! I play cello so i know what he's saying and its correct! Its better than the way i would teach it!
you guys are rude, this guy posted these videos to help out people and all you can do is rag on him. any good musician knows to learn from many composers to be a versatile musician, so instead of wasting your time by mocking someone, why do you all go out and try to help someone
@Ondore88 you learn from teachers, not composers (unless they are cellists who composed etudes for the instrument)
Nobody is mocking him!!
The point is to warn people about bad videos.
If a unsuspecting person watches this to improve their vibrato and thinks that this is the way to do it, not only will it not look right, it will hinder them. and that is downright dangerous. it can damage your technique and even your hand's tendons!
When i used to play the cello about, 3 years ago or so.I could vibrato even better than him. For the love of all that is holy do NOT follow his vibrato technique.
Yeah guys, to practice vibrato is to your put hand on the your chest and pivot your hand to what ever finger you want, i'm a professional and i know what i'm talking about!
Terrible. You really don´t know how to play the cello, do you? Your vibrato is horrible. Folks, don´t follow his instructions and don´t do whatever it is he´s doing. It´s all wrong.
@Ga7atTown Everyone is complaining about these videos, but I have read about these things and not everything can possibly be covered in a lesson that is under 2 minutes long. There is many many things that can be said. This video is not going to tell you everything that you need to know about vibrato, what it does do, is gave you the idea to expand upon. I believe that it is doing a good job in that sense.
OK but the important thing with vibrato technique is that the movement takes place in the whole of the fore arm from your elbow to your fingers, not just in the wrist. The arm should be in a straight line and there is no twisting of the wrist. Also, if you''re playing vibrato on the 3rd finger for example, fingers 1 & 2 should be relaxed and in contact with the fingerboard.
Isn't it a personal option whether or not to keep the 1st finger down? I usually only put finger 2 down. I am probably doing it wrong...I'm a work in progress.
Your vibrato SUCKS! Im 13 and I have a wayyy better vibrato then this guy.

Questo ragazzo non ha la minima idea di come si suona il violoncello, vada a studiare in una scuola seria prima di permettersi di fare il maestro!

This is incorrect. Cello students, please do not follow this guy's advice. He's not a real cellist.

I play Bass Guitar, have done for a long time. And Im thinking about buying a Cello. Is it tuned the same as a Bass Guitar? :)
Please respond :)
iBeeJaysonaa 1 year ago
@iBeeJaysonaa no, a bass is eadg and a cello is cgda. basses are tuned to a fourth and a cello is tuned to a fifth

this should be taken down. this is going to spawn 13,000+ terrible vibrators.
i hope noone pays to take lessons from this joker.

@giothebeast21
what he is saying about practicing with the metronome is correct. it can definitely help.
BUT the point of having a video and not just sound or a written description is to SHOW how it's done.
And his vibrato is wrong. he twists his wrist and extends his fingers too much.
it's not good for the hand and the technique. it's a strain on the hand.
if you play the cello like that and twist your wrist, it's not a good vibrato.

Usually I find that keeping the other fingers gives you better holding power on the string, especially for beginning players. =)
