  • I agree that ASL and English don't match, so add closed captions with a disclaimer. True its not needed for Deaf, but I still would like some ASL vlogs to have CC if the vlogger is comfortable. The nice thing on youtube is you can turn the CC on or off depending on your preference. Why add CC? They help bring Deaf/ Late deafened and HOH people together. CC brings Deaf awareness to people who have a limited understanding of ASL. ASL students can turn them off to improve their receptive skills.

  • Yes I totally agree with DaveASL. I'm hard of hearing too and I'm learning ASL. It helps more without captions. Thanks for this vlog!

  • Hi Toby! I completely agree, I'm hard of hearing and still learning ASL. If I see vlogs without CC I pay attention much more, helps to learn better :)

  • If I do I won't add subtitles at all

  • Personally I agree with this vlog that open caption or subtitles are not needed for deaf people that uses their signing I am deaf as well few of my friends are learning sign language they ask me if they're lost on some things and I help them out but as for captions and subtitles go like it has been said in this vlog they don't match with each other and I don't like what other have said about us deaf ppl don't use subtitles to our signing skills heck I don't have any videos of my own but

  • Thank you for posting this video. I hope you've ignored the silly comments made which have absolutely nothing to do with ASL. Please folks, let's stick to the topic of the video!

  • I prefer transcripts written in the notes section or captioning on the video itself. If people don't want to watch the captions they can be ignored visually by watching the signer's hands.

  • i agree with your point about never mix both languages. true.

by attempting to choose the "lesser of two evils" - no signing or English signing - by choosing the best evil, English signing, we create a new evil - we ruin ASL.

by attempting to preserve two languages, we lose one. we preserve one "at the expense" of the other (ASL ends up "paying for it"). the cost is too expensive. i agree we shouldn't compromise Deaf heart and language :).

  • i can always count on you Toby for the right attitude about things, especially related to ASL/Deaf culture. you made great points i hadn't thought about and will be thinking about now.

i don't get why hearing people would be bothered by no subtitles. it makes no sense because (as you well stated) they are able to learn the language if they want to know it.

it is NOT the same for Deaf people because there is no visual access to language and they are minority. hearing people already have access.

  • I think that if people want captions on ASL vlogs, then they should put captions on all the other videos posted on YouTube! It shouldn't be an option for videos on youtube to have captions/subtitles, it should be a requirement!

  • You can Gloss ASL but I dont think i know of one deaf person who use's it, also in response to RevBruff, Hearing people have the ablilty to learn ASL at their own free will, deaf people cannot necessarily learn to talk or read as easily.

  • I don't know if anyone has mentioned this or not, but the fact that ASL is not a written language means true captioning or subtitles aren't really possible.

English can have captions because it IS a written language.

But I will add that in order to bridge the cultures, something must be done, such as intepreting or translation. If the desire is to reach only one group of people, then don't caption it.

  • Question, deafpcatoby, if you can't access the language on a spoken english vlog or tv, would you be upset if they didn't caption or subtitle it? (devil's advocate) Is it all about equality and access? Or preference?

  • Yeah, I know. I am struggling on that but the problem is it takes a very long time to complete for one vlog. I will see what I can do.

  • I did captions to one of my videos. . . it's a short video but the process was tedious. After doing that. . . I don't know how many I will caption. It does take a very long time!

Just to be sure, the last part of my previous comment wasn't directed at you, but a general one to anyone who happens to read it.

  • @deafpcatoby I am an ITP student who works as a supplemental instructor and leads study groups. This semester I am leading a Beginnning Sign to Voice class and will be using a lot of your VLOGS. I agree with no captions. As hearing people we can't help but gaze at the captions (even if we are fully comprehending the signer) The best way to learn is to work at it. I am amazed how much my receptive skills have grown since I began my voicing classes. Keep it up Toby. I LOVE your VLOGS!!

  • @RevBruff

personally, i see it this way :).

the hearing version of the problem as an issue of "preference." they can take a course and learn ASL, Spanish, whatever.

the Deaf version of the problem is an issue of "access," therefore, equality or fairness.

i learned in logic class that it is a "logical fallacy" (bad logic) to compare two different issues - like asking a question in a way that makes things look or seem like they are comparable, when they are not. maybe this applies?

  • @ReformedTheology5 Retarded ass pussy blocker! I know damn well you didn't block me because I cursed you blocked me because you're a close minded moron who only speaks to other close minded morons! Baptists and Mormons are probably the two WORST types of Christians! You're a disgrace to those who are actually good, kind Christians!

  • @Sectumsempra9833175

what? i never blocked you. i deleted your comment because you called a Christian a "b". that is not necessary and my page is Christian, i kindly posted my explanation to your page.

for being such a happy and content person as you claim, you seem to be really angry at innocent people who have done you no wrong. God says there is no peace for the wicked and that they have no rest unless they cause someone to stumble. i hope you find peace, Jesus Christ, one day.

  • @ReformedTheology5 PS: I read the comment you left on your retarded ass bimbo's page (ForeverPraiseJesus) and I'm a FEMALE there for I can't be a guy! Oh, and there's no need to feel sorry for me; I'm quite happy thank you very much! :-)

why are you stalking me everywhere I go? you need to get a life. ask Jesus to give you a real life. YOU HAVE NO LIFE. wish you would see that. no, i am not going to hate on my sister like you hate the whole world. you sound like the devil. Jesus said unless you repent, you will perish in ETERNAL HELL, GOD'S JUDGMENT.

do not be so haughty. the hairs on your head are numbered. stop stalking Christians and verbally abusing them. YOU LIVE A SAD LIFE. YOU HAVE NO PEACE OR JOY.

  • @ReformedTheology5 I'll sum it up and make it easy for you to understand: Heaven and Hell are lies! There is NO SIN ONLY human nature that was given to us by your God and Jesus!!!

  • @ReformedTheology5 Oh and I want to "thank you" for reporting me to YouTube! You harassed me more than I did to you and yet you have the nerve to report me?! What your problem is is that you're jealous that I have more intelligence that you ever will and it upsets you so much you go around acting like a little bitch (*gasp* oh my go I called you a bitch!!! <---sarcasm). Oh and I did read the comments that you left for me on your channel you are worthless and pathetic.

  • @Sectumsempra9833175

i will leave more beautiful comments for my sister in Christ, as angry as it makes you.

now you don't want me to have any friends either, just because you are so hateful, all your friends are probably either phony or as messed up as you are?

i don't know you. i never did anything to you. leave the Christians alone. we haven't done anything to you.

why are you so obsessed with stalking and verbally abusing Christians? do we have to put up with your abusive speech? BLOCK

  • @ReformedTheology5 But of course! Go right ahead! Brainwashed morons NEED to stick together with other brainwashed morons! Oh and I have friends but they aren't as messed up or as brainwashed as you and your friends are! I'm not stalking nor am I verbally abusing you. I curse; who the fuck cares? A lot of people curse nowadays the world isn't all sunshine and lollipops as you'd like it to be! GROW UP!!!

  • @ReformedTheology5 @ReformedTheology5 C'mon now quite telling lies (it makes Jesus cry)! You blocked me and you know it! I probably "abuse" your kind (Christians) WAY less than you morons abuse me! Who cares if I called one of your friends a bitch? I just tell it like I see it! Private things to your friend? You posted PUBLIC comments on her channel belittling me! I know you're not my therapist; you'd make a lousy one anyhow! I do NOT need your Jebus!

  • You are absolutely 100% right.

  • WELL receptive skills take time... THe idea is not to translate everything into english ITS TO LOOK AT THE SUBTITLES TO SEE THE PORTRAYED INFORMATION then go back and watch the video with ASL grammer kept in mind.... SO i completely disagree

  • NO toby I am hearing and I disagree because when learning ASL it is important to keep in mind the ASL grammer but it is most important to keep in mind the interpretation in your head as an interpretor you need to be able to transfer the ASL into english for hearing people so they can understand

  • YEAH!! i agree with you so much!! good vlog!! keep it up ok thks. i give u a 5 rate and add the favorite :)

  • You are so right, thanks for this!

  • Great vlog; I definitely agree. Though actually, I'm a hearing ASL student, and my receptive skills are much better than my expressive skills. When I sign, I tend to mess up sentence structure, but I can understand it if I see it.

  • I'm with you on the time thing alone. I've done captions for my spoken vids before from spoken english to written english..and that's hard enough with all the ums and vocalizations made that convey information without words. Doing a signed version would be like what you said in reverse. i hope that made sense.

  • I think a typed summary is a nice middle ground, although so much potentially valuable information is lost in the process. The same goes for any type of translation though :) Nice work

  • Sadly, I must agree. 'forcing' us to concentrate is the best way.

In my classes, there is a student who always had someone translate what the (deaf) instructor was saying. When that person was gone she asked me to do it (I did only a FEW signs. I made her struggle through the rest). But when BOTH of us were gone from class one day, she was totally LOST. This was after some 24+ weeks taking ASL.

Also, I find subtitles distracting in ANYTHING I watch. I can't watch subtitled movies either.

  • Awesome... loosing my hearing. want to learn. Thanks

  • I totally agree. I'm hearing but I know my receptive skills are not as good as my expressive skills. I love to find ASL vlogs on youtube and watch them so I can improve on my receptive skills. If Hearing people rely on subtitles, then we will be reading the subtitles instead of watching the person sign. And it is also true that there are some signs that are hard to translate. So I can see how it would be hard to add subtitles especially since English is your second language.

  • I'm hearing and I TOTALLY agree!

  • hey we have right, cuz there are tons of hearing people keep talking without subtiles too. Until they respect us for who we all are.. you ROCKZ!

  • Great explanation! I totally agree you! I think many hearing people try to think in English for ASL, but cannot do that.

I like the position you took. = D I do enjoy your signing very much too.

  • YOU RULE!! =)

  • hey, i'm glad that you explained about this issue. i would refer this vlog in my project (Study of ASL VLOG) if your vlog appeared before i finishing my project at few months ago. Anyway, you explained it well!

    by the way..

As i typing down this comment, i just realized that there's the short clip of you in Study of ASL. hah, i hope you won't mind about it.

  • it is true!

  • I absolutely love watching you sign. I've missed my signing classes so much and you're totally right. My first asll teacher was hearing, and as such (though said not to herself) signed se, I then had a deaf asl teacher and failed miserably because I was so dependent on english grammar. I still struggle with asl grammar to this day. You are a tremendous help. Thank you :)

  • I actually agree with you. For hearing students, a summary or small transcript on the side would be beneficial. But personally? I would want to be able to receive the ASL visually and increase my skill.

  • Nonetheless, those of us who happen to be speaking and deaf/ hoh do need to see some words because literacy is one of our main modes of communication.

  • BINGO!!!

LOL... If you read people's comment on my SideKick SLIDE VLOG's, you will see a couple of negative comments on my VLOG cuz they don't understand what I am signing.

That's why I avoid typing subtitle into my VLOG's... It takes too much of time and also is always difficult to find right words to match with my ASL signing and facial expression.

  • good point dude! remember hearing expact us to do the english. so we expact them to do the ASL too.

  • I guess it all depends on your target audience. If you were trying to educate hearing parents of deaf babies or advocate why one SHOULD learn to sign then captions would be preferred. As an ASL student, I appreciate seeing captions at times...just to see if I'm on track. But if they were on everyone's vlog I would not feel challenged. I can see that you have worked with ASL students...you are very easy on the eye!! To interpret for you would be a dream! Love your Vlogs!
