@lilli2708 However, that is only because of the romanization for the two words. In Japanese the characters for Tokyo (東京Eastern Capital) and Kyoto (京都Capital City) are distinct　（well besides "capital" that is ^_^).

I'm going to Japan next year for my gap year. I don't want to spend my whole 5 months in somewhere like Tokyo because that would give me a limited experience of Japan. I want to go backpacking from maybe Kyoto to Japan. Is this a good idea? Can anyone suggest alternatives or other beautiful places in Japan as i don't know that much about the country as a whole. Thanks :)

i went to kyoto nagoya and tokyo. kyoto was by far the best. it would be a great place to go backpacking. you should do it.

oooh, i wanna do that too, in my gap year nex year...but im palnning to get a forgeiners rail pass and travel the country from top to bottem. so starting in hokkaido then to tokyo, kyoto, kansai, osaka, then hopefully on to okinawa and the sothern island whch are tropical like.

If you are going to Kyoto, I would suggest that you stop by at Nara as well. (Famous for temples, world largest Buddha and deer park)

Well I you are looking for a place to stay I recomd Tour Club its near Kyoto Station, its cheap and very clean. Visit Kodaiji Temple if you can at night it has spectacular view with lights.
