i just heard the university of michigan play this recorded in 1960. they went so fast i would swear they had a 331/3 turned up to 78 on the old phonographs..much faster than this..HONEST...i couldn't tongue that fast if my life depended on it..i played picc., on this piece and the director took it at this speed..very comfortable for me. that michigan recording is on here if you care to listen and form your own opinion. i saw this director conduct the you tube orchestra i think 2009.
2:34 what means the triangle? is it in the score at this point?
4.16 change of tempo? did Rossini write "Meno mosso" at this point?!? perhaps minuetto? ;) 6:10 change tempo, is the conductor crazy?
7:08 : there are trumpets here in the score? a crescendo too? and slower again...(minuetto) oh my good! [7:46: ok finally I hear the clarin
why the piccolo, flute, oboe at the end (Più mosso) play *2 triplets* instead of sestina? the main tempo remains in 3/4...not 2/4 !?! very odd... thanks . best,
MTT is using a different version of the overture. It is called the german edition, edited by Gustav Kogel. It has many quirks, but does feature 3 trombones and tuba. The triangle is in the score. The original version has certain features that are interesting but the trombone doubling in places helps. I agree that one shouldnt change the tempi to this extent, even if they are notated in the Kogel edition.
Rossini will take you places you've never been, and never knew existed. This is quite the most superb performance of this work anywhere. My goose bumps were like having serious goose bumps. Thanks for that.

This is nothing without fish blasting in at the end of it...

this it is not a minuet. Is seems the conductor doesn't know what allegro con brio is. Totally erratic!

@neilvaron Thank you I appreciate your reply ;)
(but I dont appreciate the Kogel's quirks ;) I dont understand why Kogel improves what Rossini wrote. The Rite of Spring conducted by MTT is good ;)
