  • I don't remember this one. I owned a Atari 2600. Never heard of the 5200. I had all the classics in the early 80's. Pheonix, Pacman, Wizard, Space Invaders, Centipede etc. I enjoyed playing those games more than anything out now. I think it was the sound effects there was something magical about the 80's. I don't know what it was. Everything was DARK!!

  • dt211

  • This game inspired Space Harrier.

  • This game was the bomb!

  • i was a huge fan of the Atari and the movie Ghostbusters, the game reminds me of old times and your voice makes me think you are in reality Harold Ramis

  • love you mark

  • sega is the shit

  • So Ashens did get the name of this right, and it is indeed ridiculous!

  • omg i remember this but it was on the apple II.

  • i love that this video is in HD, lol

  • "shot that dog into space" LOL!

  • telegraphed commentary

  • @Capt777harris No it's not.

  • Atari 2600 version BURNS EYES!!!! but this one looks good.

  • I love seeing Atari in HD...

  • ever try the buck rogers rpg that came out on 386, 486 pc that's the one i was looking for when i came across this

  • Oh man I love those sound effects! So retro-chic!

  • They're horizontal lines....

  • Man, all those vertical lines are making me incredibly sleepy.

  • The Buck Rodgers tv show can be watched on Retro Television Network on saturday evenings I believe. All of the late 70's and early 80's tv shows make me want to play some retro games afterwards. Hey where's Hawk? His ship was the best!

  • I think of duck dodgers

  • it looks like Solaris from 2600

  • I can't wait, until I can play Atari 5200 games myself.

  • Nice video.Did you know that the 5200 was based off of Atari's 400 and 800 computer line with slight changes.

  • haha loved this game. I played it on the library's apple II e using 5 1/4 inch floppies. we learned to mod the floppies by punching a notch on the other side and get twice the capacity.

  • do any one know how to rate all CGR videos

    5 stars? *****

    #####

  • I wish I knew.

Then again its kinda fun doing it manually if ya know what I mean.

    And yeah, they're that awesome.

  • Thanks.

  • I hoped it was the feeder song :p

  • It wasn't so much a slightly better Atari 2600 it was really an Atari 400 computer system in a massive black case minus the keyboard.

  • Comment removed

  • Nail on the head. Don't forget the difference in controllers...

  • I love the buck rogers show, it only lasted 2 seasons, battlestar galactica, which i also really like only lasted 1 season(the original series).

  • They never had a crossover for Buck and Galactica.

  • I loved this game as a kid. I remembered watching this video about a glitch I used to exploit. If you get shot or hit, but your exploded debris makes it through the last gate thingie, you complete the level. I think you lose a life though.

  • duck dogers

  • This game also looks familiar to the Atari 2600 title, Moonsweeper.

  • i think of of coleco adam computer lol

  • well i don't know about the gameplay here, but solaris on the 2600 at least looks a lot better. maybe the sprites themselves are simpler, but the colors are awesome in that game.

  • The Baseball game for the Atari 5200 is the best baseball game for any system I've ever played.

  • MUFFIT!!!! that was that stupid trouble making dogs name...just so you know

  • i had this on the commodore 64, but it seems like the atari version looks better. is it just me ?

  • hey i had this too! loved it but i cant remember if it looks better or worse than this.

  • the commodore version looked a little less, i still have it :-)

  • I think I read someplace that daggit the robot dog thing was actually a chimp in a costume

  • Dammit, There is a macintosh game that used this kind of view but the first stage was circular and when you went to the surface the view as just like this but it wasn't a buck rogers game. I remember that game had some of the best music ever. I hate being old and not being able to remember something *sadface*

  • lol they should have shot that thing into space. ^_^

  • sega kicks so much ass

  • lol when u die the screen goes crazy like a nuke

im strangely attracted to the sounds this game has

  • Sweet cartridge art ^_^

  • doesent resemble megaman at all

    (/sarcasm)

  • it doesnt

  • sure (/sarcasm)

  • Fair point, but this has the 70s-style sheen on it that I like.

  • DUCK DODGERS :D?

  • And the 24th and a half CENTURY!!

  • I used to play the pc version of it with CGA graphics. Good game but damn hard.

  • Wow, thats one really well made atari game

  • what, no twiggy sound effects?

  • The original arcade version of this game was called Zoom 909 but Sega then licensed Buck Rogers and slapped the name on it. The arcade version used primitive (and weird) hardware scaling that used Voltage Controlled Oscillators to draw the sprites contained in the object ROM to the screen. The slower the VCO clock was the longer it would take to draw the object and the larger it would appear on screen.

  • FunSpot has the sitdown cockpit version of Planet of ZOOM, but sadly, it's not working. After watching this video I really hope they get it working again.

  • haha remember this game, played it on the pc though

  • I have this game on the 5200, 2600, & Colecovision, although I don't think I've ever played it. I remember it in the arcades and it had a periscope like Battlezone that you looked through.

  • AHHH so that where daffy ducks DUCK DODGERS in the 24th and a HALF CENTUUURYYYYYY. lol

  • cartoon network made a spoof of buck rogers and called it duck rogers

  • Actually, Duck Dogers was an original Looney Tunes short which aired in 1953, directed by Chuck Jones. Jones created a spoof of the popular Buck Rogers in the 25th Century and sometimes Flash Gordon. It was originally a series of Looney Tunes shorts, and not a stand alone cartoon series, such as what you are thinking of. The series you are thinking of, aired August 2003 - November 2005 on Cartoon Network. :) If u can, look up some original shorts, so much funnier than the modern-day series. :D

  • modern day series was still one of the better cartoons for kids to watch now days. I am soooo sad Warner Brothers doesn't do as much as they used to.

  • Gameplay looks great for a old Atari game. Nice find!

  • It does have a Space Harrier feel to it.

  • Got both the Buck Rogers RPG's, one for my Commodore 64 and one for PC in DOSBox!

  • You mentioned Thunder Blade (very good and obscure reference), but this reminds me a lot more of playing Gyruss on the NES and arcade too.

  • past cool! a new website AND a classic game review

  • I love your reviews (and dog). Thank you for updating so often!

  • there was a 5200?

  • F*ck rogers err hmm.. i mean buck

  • Star Buck Rogers and the Planet of Coffee!!!

  • Tie Starbuck and the dog thing together and shoot them out of the airlock!

  • Dog's name was Muffet...

Erin Gray... skin tight white pants... smokin'!

Played this on the 2600. It was a fun game.

  • I think the half-robot, half-dog thing from Battlestar Galactica was called a "Daggit" or something. I used to love watching BSG and Buck Rogers. Long live hot space pirates.

  • There is something amazing about the old atari sounds.

  • no its not ;)

  • Yes it is. huh? this is being played on an atari.

  • oh i'm not talking about fidelity... i'm just talking about how the sounds sound.

  • mhh ok but its a shame nobody ever tried to use the full potential of the pokey soundchip.

  • They built the robot dog because the kids real dog got killed when the planet was attacked by Cylons.

  • I wonder if he drives a Mazda......

    Zoom Zoom?

  • I had this game for the Atari 8-bit computers, which is identical to this version...including those psychedelic effects at the end of each sub-level! Back in the day the furthest I made it was the fifth level (which is Level 4). There's so much going on at that point that the game slows way down like Gradius 3 on SNES!

  • Erin Gray was so HOT!!!

  • 100% AGREED .....she had an amazing ass :P

  • A Sega master system game? If it looked better maybe. But I doubt like that it would be.

  • fuck! i just got everything in the end! i'm such a fucking nerd...

  • ur awsome man i wonder where u find all these archives man.

  • I love the PS2 due to the same reason. It has so many awesome niche titles that the other systems, at the time, didn't really offer (as much as the PS2).

  • I dunno about 5200, but the GENESIS game is WAY different, a RPG type that is impossible!!

  • Buck Rogers...I only know Duck Dodgers >>

  • Thats like a parody of that show. Except they use Looney Toon characters in place of the actual people.

  • That does look pretty sweet for an atari 5200 game , I have buck rodgers the dvd set and buck rodgers for the genesis

  • duck ROGERS

  • I had this as a C64 cartridge. I thought it was friggin' awesome. Seemed almost sandbox back then.

  • I love the effect you get when you complete a level.

  • no thats level O.O

  • since when is there a level 0

  • This brings back memories... thing is i never had a 5200 so it must have been out on the atari 800 too... sheesh all these numbers

  • 0:49 Seizure-rific

  • lol good one. they should remake this game along with a flash gordon FPS

  • especially if they include that bitchin' Queen soundtrack.....that's a song worth gaming to ;^)

  • Nice cartridge artwork!

  • kl u fuckers stop complaing whos first ur both sad

  • cool

  • Yeah that damn dog used to give me nightmares as a kid and I watched slasher movies.... something about that dog was just creepier...

  • I think it means he's awesome.

    Seizure induced screens ftw!

  • True dat nigga xD

  • You run out of gas and you don't just fall from the sky, you explode. Now that's hardcore.

  • That dog thing was a chimpanzee, in side of a robot dog suit.

  • dang

  • By the way Tiggy looks like a robotic Gary Coleman, did anyone notice that?

  • I had this game for the TI 99

  • hd takes time to get on.

  • I like watching your vids when i am at work so can u sort it that i can watch then on my phone please!!!!!!

  • I dunno, get a phone that can view youtube.

  • Erin Grey - yum.

  • Sega always made great games for the old consoles, looks great for a 5200.

  • NOt in HD

  • buck rogers is cool but are there any duck dodgers games aha

  • Hmm. The comment section is full of fail already.

  • For a game made in 1983, BUCK ROGERS PLANET OF ZOOM looks like a really nice game! And it's by SEGA!!!!

And the show was full of awesome goodness! =D

  • Awesome !

  • nice!

  • owned!
