The music in the orginal amiga animation was much better. Rest is amazing, but without that orginal music it is not he same... maybe try to remix rthe orginal and all will be superb.

I guess the closest thing in the modern world to Elite would be EVE Online. At least that was my first thought when I started playing EVE, and one of the reasons I stuck with it.

You can't compare EVE to Frontier, they are totally different. Elite has a full newtonian flight system along with a massive procedurally generated galaxy.

In terms of galaxy size Eve is about 1% the size of Frontier, perhaps a lot smaller. Its also a point and click game.

elite 2 is the best game iv ever played. david braben did say they did start making number 4 but stopped. he then said that they will/might start after they finish outrider

yeah there needs to be someone like Braben to come back and make a PROPER space game again, instead of university graduates working for a large company and learning how to make a game from a text book rather than from true experience into what makes a game great.

@theinquisitor These games are not just ahead of their time. They're ahead of our time too. If Elite IV happens, which seems more like a dream now, it merely has to remake FFE on a modern engine with some fancy new toys and it'll be ahead of it's time.

Thanks. The original is playable, but not with the remade graphics. There is a windows version of Elite 3 which you can find if you google ffewin downloads, and check the first result.

Yeah, I know frontier is playable, I started playing it at 7 years old, and kinda never stopped ! The greatest game ever, in my opinion !

Yeah I can't argue with that. It was way ahead of it's time. The freedom is still unequalled. As far as I know, it's the only piece of software that ever made an attempt to simulate an entire galaxy. Generated by repetitive algorithms with massive margins of error of course, but still, a very special game. The ffewin version of elite 3 can even be run in 640x480 resolution.

Elite 4 will be good. Very good.

I hope so, but I'm a nostalgic person, I guess for me elite 2 will always be the best...

I love that feeling of freedom, beeing able to go wherever I want, and for me, the graphics are gorgeous. Technically speaking, the graphics of elite 4 will be better, but I'm quite sure they'll look ugly in front of elite 2.

By the way, when will it come out ?

There's no date set as far as I know. There's not much sign of progress, but I think they're waiting for the technology to do it justice. They might make it MMO like world of warcraft, and if so they'll probably wait until internet connections improve. It might not come out at all. There have been pathetic attempts at recreating the experience with things like Freelancer and better but still inadequate games like X.

@MindstormXL, no way, not a chance. It was written in assembly code. That's how badass David Braben is. I can barely manage C#. However, an OpenGL version has been made, called glFrontier. Graphics are much the same, higher resolution though.

Has it really been 3 years? Have I been spending too much time in hyperspace or what?

it is playable... its been shareware for ages and freeware from me for ages, you might have trouble runnign it on a modern machine though.

it would be a shame if he does! if they make it i hope we'll be able to land wherever we want on a planet like in Elite II or III. I was so glad to chose a landing site and look at the big giant otherthere taking the half part of the sky...

about multiplayer i've got some doubts with realism : to make it possible they'll probably give everyone the same date...and that's what i fear

Me too I think. Nothing else had that feeling of total freedom and vastness. It was way ahead of it's time. I think they're waiting for the technology to do Elite 4 right. There was talk of a dual release, a single player version, and a massively multiplayer version. It's probably the most eagerly anticipated game there has been so far. I just hope David Braben doesn't die of old age before he gets around to it.
