why is rusty cooley so under rated? oh yeah, because the general public thinks there is no "emotion" in playing fast because people only like what they themselves can play because they think that if they dont hear it that it doesnt exist and they are real guitarists... >:(
@Sivels It's multi-scale fretboard. He plays an 8 string with low B, high A. He says that because the high A is such a high-tension string, he needs a shorter scale, otherwise it'll snap too regularly.
@Sivels so a 25.5" and a 24.75" are actually the same? hmm. . . i had no idea that every ruler, tape measure and anything else that can make some sort of measurement was wrong.

@Heineken1712 The scale length gets shorter each string, so there's more tension on the low F# and B but you don't then have to deal with more tension on the higher strings for bending.
"I value emotion over shredding" just fuck off, seriously. How much can you flog the dead horse that is the emotion argument. For the one thing emotion is entirely subjective and why can't blistering speed be emotional? Personally I an in awe of rusty cooleys exotic scale choices and flawless alternate picking and awe is an emotion. There is more to guitar playing than the fucking blues and b5 scale and there only a few people who can make that work and a hell of a lot of old classic rock dicks
@samfulfordskates Plus, you can tell there is feeling here. Sure, it may not be as clear as a slow ass blues solo but look at his face. He is totally feeling it.

@MortaniusTaijou i have his outworld album and his solo album (both versions), and many of his lessons, and still listen to him, i still don't rate him among elite guitar players. even technique wise there are guys who are better.
@t1mel1ne Yeah, mhm. I am tired of people on Youtube giving in their opinions without thought. Everywhere everyone thinks they are the definitive judge who reigns over the masses and bestows their thunderous decree.
I've been playing for 11 years and Rusty is my personal teacher,
I played for a shitload of the greats/shredders and I have never faced challenges as much as I have with Rusty's techniques.
That's how I know; not just through listening and guessing.
@kGmusicpage At least he can play more than just the chromatic scale when improvising/sweeping/shredding. Fuck. You want to talk SOULLESS... Sister Gays from GAY7X. Hey, buddy. Learn a new guitar scale! Just saying. You sound like an infant NOOB reading from a chromatic scale lesson book.
@Dhanijel1 Yeah, NOW that's how they are, but this guitar is from pre-mass produced 8-string years, when barely anyone used 'em. This is a custom made Conklin 8-string, which means it was whatever he wanted. The reason the frets are fanned like that are because it's a high A. Do some research.
@DoctorBendz no you fucktard. the reason the frets are fanned is that its a multiscale guitar. the low b string is 27" and the high a is 25.5". that means the low strings wont be floppy and the high strings wont be too tight to pull
just because he has 8 strings on his guitar doesn't mean that he has to play all of them in every situation. he uses 8 strings for more possibilities and more possibilities for chords
@ExtremeBogom Yeah, got it!! many solos i really enjoyed to hear in the past, are sounding lame for me, now. In the past i heared "just a song. Now i hear a mix of Instrumtes. Sometimes i think why do they play e - d# not e - d for ecample.
Sure, that's part of the creative process. But I understand where your coming from, in that when you are kicking back, and just jamming and feeling it; your not straining or anything, it's all groove and feeling.
But there is a time and a place for both states of mind in music.
@ExtremeBogom fuck yeah man, music theory is necessary, from jazz to classical to everything, guitar players should learn more styles than just playing E E E A# (aka Kirk Hammet)
What I'm trying to say here, is that when you learn musical theory, you're not just learning theory, but you're learning the infinite amount of shapes and sequences you can use.
They're inextricably linked. This is where casual guitar players may turn away.
Therefore, good knowledge of theory will help with more complex, and / or technical music.
@ExtremeBogom I find that to be true not just when you learn theory but as you advance and progress as a musician/guitarist. The better you are technique wise and just all around playing wise you listen at a much higher level than the average layman. In other words the more you are into the music and learning how to play it the higher level you listen at.
@ExtremeBogom Yeah, totally. The stuff I listened to a year ago has become so much different since I've learned all that I know now.. It's kind of strange, actually. But I like it.
@ExtremeBogom Once I learned the basics to musical theory you here things differently but also if you let this carry you away you forget what music is ,music is a way to express you feelings, emotions, and pleasure, the theory is just a guide so your music doesn't sound like crap.
it's a custom guitar made by Bill Conklin of Conklin guitars, 8 strings, an added low and an added high, the frets and bridge are slanted so the high string has a shorter length, otherwise you run the risk of the string snapping easily if the scale were long. rusty has his own dean signature, the RC8 now, but he has stated he will continue to use the Conklin from time to time.
@RoseCrush yes by the time you get to the high a, it is 23.5 inches, by the time you get to the low b, it is 25.5 inches. check out octave4plus strings, they enable not just high a, but up to high b tuning, without even fanned frets.
Rusty Cooley is my god!!!!!! I think he's much better than The Beatles and he can play much better melodies than Mozart. I think anyone who doesn't like shred metal should be brutally murdered with an axe. I love you Rusty! Drugs! Sex! Religion! Rock 'n' Roll! YEAH!!!
they're called Fanned Frets, they supposed to be more comfortable to play on doing runs the whole scale of the neck. most custom guitar shops do them.
@DavefromTinj i thought it was for the low F# string because it has a longer scale legnth because of the thickness of the string.................. im not sure i just herd it somwhere:P
its not about comfort at all. its so the scale length is different at the top string than it is at the bottom string to accommodate the vast difference in string gauge. if you look closely, the nut and bridge are also at an angle, making the length of the neck 23.5" at the top string and 25.5" at the bottom.
fanned frets are nothing new they were first introduced in the 16th century they help with the scale length and intonation throughout talk to the guys from scale the summit their guitarist knows all about fanned frets and crap cause he's endorsed by michael sherman guitars
its for a few reasons but the main one is string tension, this guitar has a 25" to 23" fan, its an standard 7 string with a high A! the shorter scale allows for a higher tuned string, at 25" the string would most likely snap, or you would need a .06 say!
Speeding needs technic and hard working but playing slow is all about emotion and i hate it when i see both in one person.. He's amazing..Just amazing..And one of my favorites..
it's called fanned frets. means that the frets are angled so that the thickness of strings doesn't affect sound because of fret distance. for example, steve vai has a guitar that has different frets so that he intonates better. same thing here, just a different method.
I mean, it's a mightily impressive bit of technical guitar playing but not many people would sit and listen to this for more than a few minutes. Awesome skill and all that - I'd kill to be able to play this good - but it wears after a while.
That is a sick guitar! And monstrous playing, but did you notice it's not very interesting in the slower parts? The blazing fast parts are awesome, but there is little melody to keep things afloat in the slower section. So might as well shred I guess!!
My favorite players (even VERY fast ones) can tell some kind of story at any speed. Don't know if he's done this, but I would like to hear one mellow song with little to no distortion or shredding and see if he could make it interesting.
Were you trying to make fun of ninja gaiden AND rusty in the same comment? It really failed because you just complimented the both. You fail. You must be really good at Ninja Gaiden to play it REALLY well.
No, dickwad. WHAT THE FUCK IS WRONG WITH YOU PEOPLE? I was just trying to say that his playing is over the top and he really goes for it. Why'd i get 6 thumbs down 4 that?
its called a fanned fretboard and some players prefer it because upper fret acces and the neck speed can be bettered but it takes alot of getting used to. to my knowledge only conklin guitars do this but i might be wrong.
The strings up top have a longer scale length than the strings below, so the frets fan out to compensate for the intonation of the longer scaled strings.
im sorry i know im gonna get comment raped for this......... but this is wat i loathe about guitarplayers like this........ its just notes one after the other really really fast...... and thats it.......... no rhythm, no soul, no music.........fucking bollocks.............. i awaiting abuse now lol
-I'm sure he knows what he's doing, you can't just randomly play something (unless its in a cromatic key) and make it sound like it fits together. I mean yes its fast and you can't hear the notes too well, but atleast he knows what he's doing theory wise. He is very talented in speed I'll give him that.
-This isn't a hatred comment, just some feed back :)
I can hear his notes fine, and all of it fits in key. I'm positive he wouldn't go out of key. He is VERY educated in the topic of Music Theory. He knows what he is doing.
why is rusty cooley so under rated? oh yeah, because the general public thinks there is no "emotion" in playing fast because people only like what they themselves can play because they think that if they dont hear it that it doesnt exist and they are real guitarists... >:(

Not everyone can follow this music.
I think the bottom line is; Music Theory.
Before I grasped it, Steve Vai's "for the love of god" was the most technical my ears could grasp at the time.
As time went on, I remember music *sounding different* after learning more and more music theory.
Once you've cracked it, you hear music differently, it comes ALIVE.
You start *seeing music* as oppossed to just hearing it.
Anyone else had same experience?

Sure, that's part of the creative process. But I understand where your coming from, in that when you are kicking back, and just jamming and feeling it; your not straining or anything, it's all groove and feeling.
But there is a time and a place for both states of mind in music.

@ExtremeBogom I have.

@ExtremeBogom fuck yeah man, music theory is necessary, from jazz to classical to everything, guitar players should learn more styles than just playing E E E A# (aka Kirk Hammet)
TheNostromos 10 months ago
@ExtremeBogom Music theory? No. Maybe appreciation for technically challenging guitar playing, but not music theory.
edsped 9 months ago
@edsped
Well I disagree.
It normally takes an understanding of music theory to enjoy more complicated music (Jazz is the best example).
It's not always the case, but it is often.
ExtremeBogom 9 months ago
@ExtremeBogom That's fine, but this isn't very complex musically.
edsped 9 months ago
@edsped
Yes.. I agree.
ExtremeBogom 9 months ago
@ExtremeBogom I find that to be true not just when you learn theory but as you advance and progress as a musician/guitarist. The better you are technique wise and just all around playing wise you listen at a much higher level than the average layman. In other words the more you are into the music and learning how to play it the higher level you listen at.
musicman972 8 months ago
@ExtremeBogom Words of wisdom from The One. But seriously, totally agree with you.
yeahyeahyeahz2345 6 months ago
@ExtremeBogom Yeah, totally. The stuff I listened to a year ago has become so much different since I've learned all that I know now.. It's kind of strange, actually. But I like it.
NailsForDinner 6 months ago
@ExtremeBogom Once I learned the basics to musical theory you here things differently but also if you let this carry you away you forget what music is ,music is a way to express you feelings, emotions, and pleasure, the theory is just a guide so your music doesn't sound like crap.

diagatitho 1 year ago
his RC8's even better
ChiZ712 1 year ago
what guitar is that?
skullcrusher6 1 year ago
it's a custom guitar made by Bill Conklin of Conklin guitars, 8 strings, an added low and an added high, the frets and bridge are slanted so the high string has a shorter length, otherwise you run the risk of the string snapping easily if the scale were long. rusty has his own dean signature, the RC8 now, but he has stated he will continue to use the Conklin from time to time.
ChiZ712 1 year ago
@ChiZ712 do u know the scale length?
RoseCrush 1 year ago
@RoseCrush yes by the time you get to the high a, it is 23.5 inches, by the time you get to the low b, it is 25.5 inches. check out octave4plus strings, they enable not just high a, but up to high b tuning, without even fanned frets.

they're called Fanned Frets, they supposed to be more comfortable to play on doing runs the whole scale of the neck. most custom guitar shops do them.
DavefromTinj 2 years ago 2
@DavefromTinj i thought it was for the low F# string because it has a longer scale legnth because of the thickness of the string.................. im not sure i just herd it somwhere:P
michaeltroke 2 years ago
you are right, its not about "comfort" its about scale length beetween low F# and high E
spyderbreed 2 years ago
Rusty's is actually B to A. He has an additional high string instead of a lower.
s1uff1sc001 2 years ago
its not about comfort at all. its so the scale length is different at the top string than it is at the bottom string to accommodate the vast difference in string gauge. if you look closely, the nut and bridge are also at an angle, making the length of the neck 23.5" at the top string and 25.5" at the bottom.
HeadBanger666969 2 years ago
fanned frets are nothing new they were first introduced in the 16th century they help with the scale length and intonation throughout talk to the guys from scale the summit their guitarist knows all about fanned frets and crap cause he's endorsed by michael sherman guitars
brandon5pennies 2 years ago
I'm guessing the way the frets are slanted hase something to do with note location along the heavier strings ???
shovakre 2 years ago 2
@shovakre It's Probably something to do with the intonation of the 7th and 8th strings
benjie616 2 years ago
Thats what I thought (Y)
shovakre 2 years ago
its for a few reasons but the main one is string tension, this guitar has a 25" to 23" fan, its an standard 7 string with a high A! the shorter scale allows for a higher tuned string, at 25" the string would most likely snap, or you would need a .06 say!

Speeding needs technic and hard working but playing slow is all about emotion and i hate it when i see both in one person.. He's amazing..Just amazing..And one of my favorites..
memphistopheles 2 years ago
What's with the frets?
ytby7656 2 years ago
it's called fanned frets. means that the frets are angled so that the thickness of strings doesn't affect sound because of fret distance. for example, steve vai has a guitar that has different frets so that he intonates better. same thing here, just a different method.
FarazR2 2 years ago
I mean, it's a mightily impressive bit of technical guitar playing but not many people would sit and listen to this for more than a few minutes. Awesome skill and all that - I'd kill to be able to play this good - but it wears after a while.
nickbaldeagle01 2 years ago 2
That is a sick guitar! And monstrous playing, but did you notice it's not very interesting in the slower parts? The blazing fast parts are awesome, but there is little melody to keep things afloat in the slower section. So might as well shred I guess!!
My favorite players (even VERY fast ones) can tell some kind of story at any speed. Don't know if he's done this, but I would like to hear one mellow song with little to no distortion or shredding and see if he could make it interesting.

This cat plays guitar the same way that I play Ninja Gaiden ; )

Were you trying to make fun of ninja gaiden AND rusty in the same comment? It really failed because you just complimented the both. You fail. You must be really good at Ninja Gaiden to play it REALLY well.

whats with the slanted frets???
southdownies 2 years ago
its called a fanned fretboard and some players prefer it because upper fret acces and the neck speed can be bettered but it takes alot of getting used to. to my knowledge only conklin guitars do this but i might be wrong.
schecterman123 2 years ago
kool. thanks for the reply.
southdownies 2 years ago
Black Machine in The UK do it as well on there 8 string models,
ckyfraz 2 years ago
The strings up top have a longer scale length than the strings below, so the frets fan out to compensate for the intonation of the longer scaled strings.

jethrotull346 2 years ago
This is just constructive criticism...
ThePunkdude2501 2 years ago 4
I can hear his notes fine, and all of it fits in key. I'm positive he wouldn't go out of key. He is VERY educated in the topic of Music Theory. He knows what he is doing.
