I watched this video because I like the Wolfe Tones. I respect those who support Argentina's claim to the Falklands, but I really don't think the Falklanders should lose their rights for something that happened in the 19th century. I responded to you because I thought you were saying thing that weren't true (i.e. most Brits support Argentina, the islands were originally called Malvinas etc.).

I really suggest you visit the Falklands. The islanders are great people - warm and friendly, but hardy and singleminded, They'd never accept Argentine rule being forced on them. I think they'd fight for their freedom.

If a majority of people in the UK ever wanted a republic, the MPs would soon sense votes in it and amend the Act of Settlement accordingly to abolish the monarchy. But for now, a majority of people want the monarchy to continue.

In 1982 (when Argentina was describing the UK as 'colonialists') the Canadian Parliament requested full independence from the UK, and the UK accepted.

Why would the UK want to protect the oil considering they don't give any money from it? British troops died to liberate the islanders in 1982, so the freedom of the islanders is important to the British people - which is why they're important to the UK government.

The Argentine government recently banned the Islanders flag from being flown in South American ports, and is currently calling for the .fk domain to be invalidated. The Argentine President recently threatened to stop flights to the islands. There is also a campaign in Argentina to prevent cruse ships from stopping at the islands in order to "damage the economy of the islands".
These things don't hurt the UK in anyway, they only hurt the islanders - which is the intention.
The Government of the islands was elected by the islanders. The first Temporary Provision of the Argentine Constitution states that the islanders' way of life should be respected. I think a good place to start would be to recognise their democratically elected government.

The Islanders' government banned the Argentine Flag as a response to Argentina banning their flag (and because the Argentine flag unnerves the Islanders as a result of 1982). Ships looking for oil do not fly the Falklands Flag.

The islanders refer to 14 June 1982 (the date of the Argentina surrender) as 'Liberation Day'. The British troops all felt they were there to free the islanders.
Argentina removed the islanders' freedom and installed a military dictatorship. The British removed the Argentines and returned freedom to the islanders. That's why I call it a liberation.

I believe in democracy, not imperialism. A majority of people in the UK support the monarchy and want it to continue. You may disagree with the majority's view, but in a democracy, you should respect their wishes of the people.
Similarly, the people of the Falklands and Northern Ireland (and everywhere else) should have the right to determine their own destiny. The Republic of Ireland respects this right, Argentina doesn't - yet.

The islands don't belong to the UK or Argentina, they belong to the people who live there. It would be wrong for the UK to give away their freedom.
Article 3.1 of the Constitution of Ireland states that the sovereignty of Northern Ireland can only change with the consent of the people. This was supported by over 90% of the Irish people in a referendum. They weren't bullied into it.

The islands are not under British Occupation, the British Troops are there to protect the islanders from the possibility of Argentine aggression. If the Islands' Government asked the troops to leave, they would have to leave - that's not an occupation.
If a majority of people in Northern Ireland voted to join the Republic, it would happen. However, the Northern Ireland Assembly doesn't want a vote at the moment as both sides know their is still a unionist majority.

I respect those who support Argentina's claim to the Falklands, but I really don't think the Falklanders should lose their rights for something that happened in the 19th century. I responded to you because I thought you were saying thing that weren't true (i.e. most Brits support Argentina, the islands were originally called Malvinas etc.).

@jashields71 I'm sure the UK has its own reasons for wanting the Falklands (as does Argentina), but actually oil isn't one of them. The Falklanders are very proud of the fact that they're the ones who are driving the search for oil, and the ones who'd get the profits.
I really suggest you visit the Falklands. The islanders are great people - warm and friendly, but hardy and singleminded, They'd never accept Argentine rule being forced on them. I think they'd fight for their freedom.

Currently, Parliament says that the Head of State shall be the most senior descent of Sophia of Hanover (the Act of Settlement).
If a majority of people in the UK ever wanted a republic, the MPs would soon sense votes in it and amend the Act of Settlement accordingly to abolish the monarchy. But for now, a majority of people want the monarchy to continue.

In a democracy, sovereignty should be determined by the people. A majority of people in Northern Ireland want to remain part of the UK, a majority of people in the Republic of Ireland respect the wishes of the people in the north.
According to every opinion poll, a majority of people in the UK support the monarchy. Do you know of a poll that doesn't?

There was a British settlement on the islands in 1765 (2 years before the Spanish first arrived).
The United Nations doesn't not say the islands are part of Argentina. The UN says the islands' sovereignty is disputed.
Under the Falkland Islands Constitution and UK legislation, the sovereignty of the islands is determined by the islanders. So, the islands will only ever join Argentina if the islanders vote for it.

I am Welsh! The sovereignty of Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales is determined by the people born in those places. If a majority of people in any nation of the UK wanted to become independent, it would happen.
In 1982 (when Argentina was describing the UK as 'colonialists') the Canadian Parliament requested full independence from the UK, and the UK accepted.

The UK will grant independence if the islanders ask for it, to quote Partnership for Progress and Prosperity (now part of UK legislation):
"Our Overseas Territories are British for as long as they wish to remain British. Britain has willingly granted independence where it has been requested; and we will continue to do so..."
The UK respects the islanders' freedom, Argentina wants to take it away.

Why would the UK want to protect the oil considering they don't give any money from it? British troops died to liberate the islanders in 1982, so the freedom of the islanders is important to the British people - which is why they're important to the UK government.
The islanders already have their own government and there is a growing independence movement. I suggest you read an article entitled "Oil Hopes Stoke Falklands Shift Away From Loyal Shrine to U.K." by Michael Luongo.

The Argentine government recently banned the Islanders flag from being flown in South American ports, and is currently calling for the .fk domain to be invalidated. The Argentine President recently threatened to stop flights to the islands. There is also a campaign in Argentina to prevent cruse ships from stopping at the islands in order to "damage the economy of the islands".
These things don't hurt the UK in anyway, they only hurt the islanders - which is the intention.

The Government of the islands was elected by the islanders. The first Temporary Provision of the Argentine Constitution states that the islanders' way of life should be respected. I think a good place to start would be to recognise their democratically elected government.

The islanders refer to 14 June 1982 (the date of the Argentina surrender) as 'Liberation Day'. The British troops all felt they were there to free the islanders.
Argentina removed the islanders' freedom and installed a military dictatorship. The British removed the Argentines and returned freedom to the islanders. That's why I call it a liberation.

I believe in democracy, not imperialism. A majority of people in the UK support the monarchy and want it to continue. You may disagree with the majority's view, but in a democracy, you should respect their wishes of the people.
Similarly, the people of the Falklands and Northern Ireland (and everywhere else) should have the right to determine their own destiny. The Republic of Ireland respects this right, Argentina doesn't - yet.

The islands don't belong to the UK or Argentina, they belong to the people who live there. It would be wrong for the UK to give away their freedom.

The islands are not under British Occupation, the British Troops are there to protect the islanders from the possibility of Argentine aggression. If the Islands' Government asked the troops to leave, they would have to leave - that's not an occupation.
If a majority of people in Northern Ireland voted to join the Republic, it would happen. However, the Northern Ireland Assembly doesn't want a vote at the moment as both sides know their is still a unionist majority.

Many Argentines want to evict the islanders, although I know this isn't the policy of the Argentine government. It is a stark choice for the islanders though - leave your birthplace or stay and loose your freedom. All this because of something that may or may not have happened 150 years ago?
