depends on which metal I'm using and on manufactures instructions... mostly what I like to achive is a golden-yellowish oxide surface to lay my opaque on.. this case I have achived with a 998c° at 55c° per minute in atm and 1 min. holding at high temp
Metal conditioning has different schools of thought: those who claim it is not useful and others that consider this procedure a must.. I personally rather do it because when I didnt I got in heavy trouble a dime for my experience!!
Ill rather give credit to metal manufactures which have researched behind their products before hitting the market and no doubt that they know best whats necessary for their materials matter of fact when you buy metal you should get with it a instructions sheet pointing out a sequence of phases to follow to correctly for treating surface & molecular structure of framework including a so called "Metal Treatment phases"... maybe one day I will do a video to explain all this more scientifically..
Regarding furnace contamination I have a carbon pellet which I purge oven with every four to six months besides constantly monitor conditions of material which I introduce and take out from furnace because they are the best proof if anything is getting nasty in the meanwhile.. but so far no problems with oven muffles for so many years of honoured activity!
very good my friend i have a manual porcelain furnace how much of temperature you raise up for condition the metal?

Mr Edident I have a question why u place the metal in the furnace before opaque. Does this step the furnace can get contaminated?
