Opterons are better than Xeons, they have threads as well as cores, plus on board memory controller plus some other stuff. and you can build a desktop around it.

well this is another clip and another machine.

2000 Series Opterons allways come in pairs (2x).

8000 Series Opterons usually come in double pairs (4x) or even the doube of the double (8x)

This video shows 2000 (2x) Series Shanghai (4x) versus 2000 (2x) Series Istanbul (6x)

So it's 8 core versus 12 core.

I guess the other video was on the 8000 series. So its 4 x 6 = 24

the i7 has 4 cores and 4 hyperthreads so it can do 8 things at once. but i dont really know how powerful the hyperthreads are or how they even increase performance.

in case you didn't comprehend the video, it's Dual Socket Opteron 2 x 6 cores = 12 cores. To sum this up, 12 cores @ 2.6GHz, can barely keep up with quad core i7 @ 4GHz??? Where is your logic?

Honestly, I am not against AMD. All I am saying is that Core i7 is more superior architecture compared to AMD's offerings. Yes, it's expensive, but remember those days when AMD's Athlon x2 3800+ was costing over 300$??? I actually bought one of those for 308$ at Fry's Electronics back in 2006.-.-

Neither of us can really compare them anyway. the Opteron is a server core and the i7 is meant for desktop applications , like playing games and actually rendering things. ^^;

Actually, we are supposed to be comparing that way... Look, when Pixar, for example, needs to build servers which will mostly do rendering, they'll look into the rendering benchmarks, right? I think so...

Also, Intel will be releasing new 8 Core, 16 threaded Xeon, with 24MB of Cache later this year. Now, that's something new rather than just increasing the amount of cores per die. 12 kittens can't compete against 4 Lions. Maybe it isn't the best comparison, but it's vivid.

Yeah I agree , AMD really isnt showing us the right thing here. ^^; and 8 cores sounds delicious. lol. I wont be buying one however. I probably wont buy a quad core for a long time either unless windows makes a 256-bit OS. Hyper-threading doesn't give you twice the performance; in typical multithreaded workloads it's typically 30% extra. Having said that -- 2P Istanbuls will outperform 2P Nehalems. Period.

I use both 2S Intel and 2S AMD systems. As soon as my h/w

vendor confirms hardware compatibility I am upgrading to Istanbuls. With intel -- Nehalems are all they have in 2S market.

Don't get me wrong... Both Intel and AMD are great companies, but they have one thing in mind is to make money and to bring new innovations to the market, obviously. Without AMD or other way around, we wouldn't have the technologies that we have...
