  • DAVID MILLER YOU ARE A CLOWN!

  • Some people are so oblivious and stupid on this subject. They haven't the foggiest idea on what they are talking about. They seem to believe that 100% of the people downtown actually live downtown. They actually believe that 100% of drivers will bike it to work someday, when many or most of them don't even live in the 416 area. What about the people that live in Toronto and drive to work in the 905 areas? Nobody has ever asked that question. Only I have !

  • You are backward. Did you listen to the logic of what is said. Compare the space taken up by a bike, with the space taken up by a car. Think!

What are you going to do about peak oil?

Do you want to support women being treated like crap by buying imported oil from places like Saudi Arabia, or do you want to support terrorism, by purchasing your cars fuel from states that support or harbour terrorists? Thats where your gasoline is from..

The world needs to reduce its addiction to oil!

  • You aren't thinking. The population of our planet continues to grow, and no matter what you think, where do you think the food is going to come from? By foot? bike? think before you post next time. Yeah, I'm supporting terrorism when I'm hungry for food.

  • The reality is, that we should reserve our oil for where it is needed, not for people to drive 1 km or less, just to take themselves somewhere. My point is valid. Unnecessary car transport promotes terrorism/ uses gasoline.

I am aware that food is largely trucked, but we should in the longer term at least address this with electric train freight, producing more food locally, and appropriate town planning.

I am thinking, you are assuming the private car is the only valid means of transport!

  • I am talking about private car transport not goods shipping!

Urban sprawl promotes car ownership, and you can fit more bikes into the same space that a car takes up. If you consider that the population is growing, what do you propose, 10 lane freeways everywhere. The solution lies in reducing unnecessary car trips, and to do this you have to make it safer to ride a bike. Town planners, simply should not be spreading people out over large distances, and low density housing, reduces farmland.

  • The city of Toronto stopped expanding the subway east past Kennedy Stn in like what? 1980 ?? And then came that stupid SRT. Some geniuses decided that.. "yep, we're never ever going to extend that subway again past Kennedy." Many big cities around the world have continued to invest in public transit, whereas Toronto is now trying to play catch up. City is growing too quickly, and many more people are going to move out. That's what creates urban sprawl.

  • What creates Urban sprawl, is low density suburbia. Point 2 is that yes they should extend the train.

  • There are many people that work in retail, like managers, assistant managers, etc... that are constantly being moved around from store to store all over the GTA and beyond. It is IMPOSSIBLE for anyone in this type of job to buy a house in Toronto, when a week later, they could be working in a store in Peterborough. These people could quit their jobs, if you think it's that easy, but then somebody else will replace that person, and will end up doing the very same thing. What do you purpose?

  • You raise a few points here, but firstly, that is not a good reason to oppose 2 bike lanes taking up a car lane.

Most of your points are reactive. The fact is that Peak oil will be occuring sooner rather then later , and we need to ween ourselves off oil, and save it for essential transport, and food etc.

NOT for non- essential transport. The fact is that you can put more people on the same road if a car lane is converted to 2 bike lanes. People need to start cycling its that simple.

  • Additionally to my other point, is that society in general needs to shift focus away from the idea that oil will always be a cheap and plentiful source of fuel, peak oil is comming and after that point gasoline will be more and more expensive.. We ourselves, and govt should be getting ready!

  • @KrunchyJD The urban sprawl that your getting at is because the infrastructure for those communities are being far exceeded by the expansion and building of new house's and new communities without thinking ahead of how to get people from point A to point B quick and conveniently without the use of a private car.

Toronto could have been different, from planning of mass transit and better highway integration, we could be moving much faster then today. This Jarvis remodel was just a waste.

  • Where do you think your food comes from? the grocery store? I thought so. It takes fuel to ship food and product that you spend your money on. So in many ways, you are supporting terrorism. Think next time before you post something so stupid again.

  • This initiative will not only increase the negative impact on the environment but will also decrease the quality of life in Toronto.

How do you propose that bicycles use the lane in snowy, winter months? Oh...you didn't think about that did you. How about using this as an exercise to develop your ability to assess the total and true impacts of Miller's half-thought out initiatives.

Miller is a lawyer not a sociologist or environmentalist.

  • If Miller wants people to leave their cars at home, he would turn many of Toronto's parking lots into parks with bike paths.

But oh yeah, I forgot, he needs YOUR MONEY to park your car downtown.

He only wants your money. It has nothing to do with the environment. Reducing car lanes only increases traffic congestion which makes pollution worse.

    What a tool !

  • As I have neither a car or any money, I must humbly disagree with your obviously heartfelt assertions.

The world has changed and while it is obviously upsetting for you, the shift in our Southern Ontario transportation network, from dependence on over-powered private automobiles to more sustainable practices is inevitable, especially in urban settings.

Thanks for joining the debate, though.

  • what do you disagree with? which part? That Miller wants your money? you don't think he wants it? You think taking away vehicle lanes is going to reduce pollution? It actually increases it. People will just move out of the city. The only way pollution is going to decrease will be when the population of our planet begins to decrease.

  • I'm afraid I disagree with your entire worldview Darcy, as it is obviously framed by a windshield.

If you take a step back and look at what you have said here, you will see that the Jarvis Street project actually increases the number of vehicle lanes from five to six.

To wit, we remove one dangerously inane reversible motor vehicle lane and replace it with two (count 'em) active transport (bike) lanes.

    5-1+2=6, eh?

The word "vehicle" does not just mean motor vehicles, my friend.

  • Last time I checked, it still snows in winter, and the snow will get plowed into your bike lanes. So what good is that? There are already bike lanes on Sherbourne which is only a block or two away. There's no need for additional bike lanes on Jarvis at the expense of taking away a lane. Roads in Toronto were designed mainly for cars. Seems like I know the city far better than you do.

  • Yo Darcy,

I have ridden the streets of Toronto for fifty years, and I was an active transportation (foot, bike, TTC) messenger, 12 months of the year for a quarter century, during which I compiled literally hundreds upon hundreds of thousands of documented delivery kilometers and I have never even applied for a driver's license. And there is currently a complaint before the Occupational Health and Safety Board of Ontario's Ministry of Health that may alter how the entire city moves. Sorry.

  • What about women that don't use bikes? What about pregnant women? What about people that LIVE in Toronto that work OUTSIDE of the 416 area? Does that explain why people can't move to Toronto? What about the gun violence? people want to move away from that stuff. There are so many other things, but people like you just play dumb, or maybe just dumb in general. Get a clue buddy !!

  • What about women that need to get their kids to school? or Dads? many people are now divorced. what about the school closures? kids get relocated. what about daycare centres? how do you transport these people? by bike? get a clue buddy.

  • Gee Darcy, don't have a stroke, eh pal?

You sure seem to be upset about a lot of things.

It must be tough to watch the world you understand changing so much. But isn't that just the nature of the beast? Especially in the 21st century, everything seems to be evolving even faster than ever.

But why yell at me about it?

Come up with some solutions of your own that make sense, because unfortunately maintaining the status quo is not an option.

It dosen't work anymore. And hasn't for years.

  • "You sure seem to be upset about a lot of things."

Wow, you make that assumption over a few posts?

The problem with people like you is that there are ideas being brought forth, but the levels of government DO NOT listen to people. You don't seem to get that part. The government is all about getting more of YOUR money. Nothing else.

  • We need some BIKE LANES!!!!!!!!

  • this makes me really like Miller.
