  • I always cry when I watch this. I saw it live and I never forgot it.

  • OMD/1 I want to bawl my eyes out!

  • omg i want to crie.

  • In a year where so much went wrong for horse racing, especially surrounding the Breeders' Cup, this is one lasting beautiful moment.

  • It wasn't because of her height; it was because of her eyesight!

  • Carl Nafzger definitely possesses two of the winning traits he defines in his book Traits of A Winner - ability and class. The 1990 Derby was one for the ages. Watching the guys carry Mrs. Genter in her wheel chair to the winner's circle was something I will never forget. She was one of the true ladies of the sport. Thanks for posting. It was awe-inspiring seeing this again.

  • He's the winner, he's the winner. Here he come's. He's gonna win. He's the winner. He's going to win the Kentucky Derby. He won. He won. You won. You won the Kentucky Derby....just awesome

  • 92 year old Frances Genter hadn't wanted to attend the race, knowing that she would be better able to see and hear it on TV, but Nafzger insisted that she come, promising that he'd be her eyes and ears. When Unbridled made his move, Nafzger told her, "He's taking the lead . . . There he is! There he is!" "He's gonna win. He's gonna win. He's a winner. He's a winner, Mrs. Genter. You've won the Kentucky Derby, Mrs. Genter. I love you!.

  • sorry i cant tell what he's saying. can someone tell me what he's saying?

  • i heard she died a month after the derby or something like that this is the most touching scene in ntra history. leave it to carl nafzger for this god bless both of them.

  • It's pure joy to see this again.

  • Still brings me to tears after all these years. I went to the Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony yesterday to watch Carl Nafzger be inducted and only cried a little bit. He and Wanda are truly two of the finest people I met in my many years of working at the tracks.

  • the silks craig perret wore that day .....along with a large display remembering this moment ....hangs at canterbury park....i work there and look at it every day

  • Great vid of one of the most memorable moments in racing. Ms. Genter was nearly blind at this time. Her passing was a blow to the industry as was the premature death of Unbrideled, who was poised to become a great sire. Rest in Peace

  • I must confess, this one chokes me up every time, too. His fondness for Mrs. Genter is apparent. You get the feeling that he held her in the same esteem as his mother or grandmother, with great affection. A grand moment in television and Derby history.

  • @everydaymommy you couldnt have said it better!!!

  • I agree with the other posters. A terrific moment in television history, not just sports. Thank you very much for posting this, it is so thrilling and heartwarming.

  • This is one of my favorite Derby memories.. I tear up every time, too! Thanks for posting...

  • It never fails - I tear up every single time I hear this. A truly beautiful moment in racing's history.

  • I was born the day after this race occured.:-)

  • Thanks for posting this!

  • Still gives me goose bumps, 18 years later. The greatest moment ever in horse racing, definitely one of the greatest moments in all of sports. Thanks for posting this.

  • probably one of my favorite moments from racing, even better than the rags to riches stories of horses like charismatic, river keen, and budroyale

  • Sweeter than the race itself. A touching moment.

  • aww
