  • Every time I think about what that must have meant to that kid I get tears in my eyes. Not only does she get to play the Grand Ole Opry, she gets to play with some of the best bluegrass musicians in the world. It is a really exclusive club, and to be welcomed into it with open arms has to feel really good to a 12 year old.

  • I just saw her at the river city bluegrass festival and I met her ( Sierra hull) she is like 21

  • That is some awsome pickin.

  • I am in awe of her play and her composure on stage at this early age. She can flat make that mando talk......

  • toe tappin music at its best,, EXCELLENT

  • That's what I'm talkin' about!

  • i met her! at a festival a couple days ago she was so sweet! and she sang A-M-A-Z-I-N-G!!

  • Uploaded in 2007, so if performance is in 2007 or 2006 Sierra is 15 or 16 years old here. She looks younger.

  • @wfoj21 I believe this was recorded in 2003, and Sierra was in 6th grade, age 11.

  • Makes me smile...big time!

  • Alison is beautiful

  • Wow! Awesomenessnessnessness

  • They are masters of bluegrass---fun to listen to.

  • going to see ricky skaggs kentucky thunder on aug 26 at watseka theatre watseka illinois

  • that youngen can wail-

  • Sierra is amazing, playing on top of complex chording like this at such a young age and with technical mastery. Wow!

  • That's foot stomping music,

  • Sierra came to our hometown a few months ago, and I missed it. She was doing some mean picking on that mandolin in this clip.

  • This reminds me of all the instruments my father played on the front porch. Awesome proformers!

  • YEHAAAW!!!

  • This is great

  • Fantastic!

  • This is THE definitive version of this trad BG song. Six of the world's greatest acoustic musicians together on one stage.

  • Check out the video with Sierra and Ryan Holloway playing "Salt Creek". It's a few years later than this footage, guess Sierra is about 11-12. That one is just incredible. This version of 'cluck' is my favourite - is continually impressed by the awesome skill of Ron Block and Krauss (and Douglass and ...). Ron Block plays the banjo like he invented it; he owns that instrument.

  • You can see how proud she is to be playing with some of the greats. I love this video

  • What a little sweetheart! I also just heard about Sierra Hull, and I'll be listening to her a lot more.

  • Jaw-dropping playing, I've only just discovered Sierra Hull, what talent!

  • I love Bluegrass

  • Amazing!! You can't not like bluegrass when there is this much talent being shown!!

  • Pluck, young chickadee.

  • Wow. Sierra is now a presidential scholar at my alma mater. Mindblowing.

  • All natural and talent. This is what's called "Making Music".

  • Absolutely phenomenal!

  • @dustyturtle She was about 8. She had been playing for almost 2 years at that point.

  • @vcp430 Actually she was an 11-year-old 6th grader in this video. She'd been playing for about 3 years (from age 8).

  • You gotta love Sierra's smile at the end. Anyone know how old she was when this was recorded?

  • Vote up if you think Sierra will be the next Alison Krauss (this is not SPAM)

  • @LycoValleyRRFan Ron Block on banjo and Dan Tyminski on guitar, as if perfect for the tune "Dueling Banjos" played in the key of A and Dan and Ron would do a good job, wouldn't they? Also, Ron Block on banjo and Sierra Hull on mandolin, as if perfect for the tune "Dueling Banjos" played in the key of A and Sierra and Ron would do a good job, wouldn't they?

  • @LycoValleyRRFan Negative. She's the FIRST Sierra Hull. She is of course influenced by Alison Krauss, just as Alison was influenced by others.

  • @trumpetvids I see your point. Good point.

  • @LycoValleyRRFan Funny but I said exactly the same to my girlfriend yesterday!!!

  • @LycoValleyRRFan I agree with the poster that said she is the first Sierra Hull, though I will say I think if Alison Krauss and Rhonda Vincent had a child together she would be like Sierra Hull.

  • Vote up if you think Sierra will be the next Alison Krauss (this is not SPAM)

  • thank You God for giving us these true angels !

  • thank You God for giving us these true angels !

  • insane goodness.

  • Killer break by Ron Block.

  • I love this, but check out this version with vocals by the great Scottish guitarist Bert Jansch. Neil young described him as the Jimi Hendrix of the electric guitar, which doesn't really show on this number, but does elsewhere. it's new up, though an old recording - I was the 18th viewer.

Can't post link effectively, so search for Bert Jansch Cluck Old Hen

  • This is great! Amazing talent (all of them)!

  • This song is great

  • sierra hull knows my fiddle teacher! im fairly certain he taught her, too!

  • How truly refreshing to hear music being enjoyed and played by such musicians. Thank you.

    Sierra, your the cat's pajamas!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • this is my favorite allison krauss of all time. She is a wonderful vocalist but the instrumentals are really my favorite. Allison if you are out there : PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PUT OUT AN INSTRUMENTAL ALBUM OF FIDDLE TUNES!!!!

  • this is so great! love this...............

  • great video

  • Look at the smile at 2:10 - 2:15 and again at 2:42 and at the end. So cute. That little girl will break a thousand hearts before she's 16.

  • @FatherTimeST1300 I reckon she's donr broke mine...

  • great love it!

  • Man, that girl can pick!!

  • Sierra's little salute to Alison right at the end of this vid is priceless.

  • She's absolutely adorable (not to mention talented). Love the way she keeps looking up at Alison, and how she breaks into a big smile after her solo, then immediately gets all serious again to focus on her job.

  • This video was from 2006 or so for PBS,I still have this vid...Sierra is all growed up now..Yee Haw!!

  • my dad sang with her when they were 14

  • Awsome, Now if we can just get Sierra and Alison back up on stage together again. Its time Gals! :)

  • If there was no allison or Union Station , Sierra would still be . thanks for posting this good video

  • I just loved Sierra Hull in this. Thanks so much to Alison Krauss and Union Station for giving this young super star a chance. You will be rewarded for sure. -Jimmy

  • inspiring

  • Sierra .. you'r amazing!!!!!.. Ramon Sanchez from Torreon , Mexico..

  • If your looking for some more music to clog to...I have some videos you might enjoy =)

  • @chunter5100

Thank you so much . I agree with you, this is great music to clog to. I just love it :-)

  • Does anyone know how i can download this song? I love it!

  • wow!!!

  • John Ashby & The Free State Ramblers were an old time music group from the Blue Ridge Mountain area of Virginia. There is a My Space page with some of their music including a version of Cluck Old Hen that may sound like what people heard at dances and parties way back when.

  • If this 12 year old mandolin player doesn't make you believe in reincarnation.......

  • Yes, she received Berklee's President's Award scholarship - full ride for 4 years. Sierra pwns! And she doesn't even read music yet. I talked to Mark O'Connor when he was 18 and I asked him what he was going to do in the future and he said "I don't know, I might go to college. I don't read music." Go Sierra!!!

  • I had no idea how many people like this song, I thought is was just me. This great and Alison is beautiful............

  • My favorite version of this tune....everything from the dobro to the fiddle to the banjo..and of course sierra hull on mandolin is just scary good ....lol lol lol..what is she ? 16 yrs old here or younger?

  • Yep, in this video Sierra is about 12 or so (sixth grade). She just started her freshman year at Berklee this fall.

  • The CMT web page list her at eight yers old when she appeared here.

  • That's possible. I'm just going off of how Alison introduced here in the "Every Time You Say Goodbye" video from the same concert. She says she was in the sixth grade, so I figured she was about 12.

  • this was only a few years ago (6) and shes 18 now.

  • I believe you and Fishpicker are correct. Sorry about that. Sierra is so talented. What a gift she has.

  • @plowhand247 The CMT is wrong. I got it from the source (Sierra herself) that she was 11 at this time, in 6th grade. She'd been playing mando for 3 years, since age 8. Also plays guitar. Recorded her first indie CD at age 10 (2002). She's 18 now and even better at both playing and singing, if you can believe it.

  • I appreciate the the info. She is so talented. I would love to meet her one day. I know she has worked hard to achieve her goals and God has blessed her with a great gift.

  • If you have the privilege of meeting her at a show sometime, you'll see what a wonderful person she is as well as talented. Very humble, sweet and gracious. A real gem - her parents raised her well. A great ambassador for bluegrass & acoustic roots music.

  • She's eight here

  • unbelievable!!!

  • Strings Rule!

  • most definately agree!

  • great music

  • great mando in this version-- it kind of floats along in an almost off key. very cool.

  • it was almost verbatim the solo that adam steffey did on the album. that kid rocks

  • I love that tune and I wrote a clogging routine to it.

It is really fun to clog to this.

  • @Nicoleclog Clogging is SO overlooked in this type of music...clogging just makes bluegrass and old time string band music SO much better....really....musicians forget the power of dance....god bless you...chris hunter

  • I saw this on PBS years ago. Where did you get this video? I love it!!

  • Total awesomeness. These are masters at the top of the world.

  • lol, that was from wiki, not me....

AKUS won a grammy for it for best instrumental.....

  • "Cluck Old Hen" is a popular Appalachian American fiddle and banjo tune (see Old time music) in the Mixolydian mode. It is played either as an instrumental or with lyrics which vary from one version to another. The earliest recording is attributed to Fiddlin' John Carson, 1923.

  • I think it's probably got 19th century or earlier roots like a lot of the bg or oldtime standards.

  • This song is awesome. The talent is outstanding!!

  • Sjukt svängigt!

Can't sit still when you here this :D

  • It doesn't get much better than that. And I think that Cluck Old Hen has been around for a while....

  • isn't this a Ron Block tune ?

  • yes it is=P

  • No. First recorded in 1923....

  • Comment removed

  • NO. It's a traditional bluegrass tune

  • FLUX

  • It don't get much better than this. Get a load of that young(er) Sierra Hull. Fantastic!

  • Absolutely BRILLIANT!!!!!!

  • Holy Smokes! Thank you, thank you! Awesome!

  • Just raw awesome bluegrass there. Some of the best on the planet.

  • I love that cheeky smile at 2:10

  • You Yanks sure are a lucky bunch to have musical talent like this - I have been following Sierra's career aand she is going to be big.

  • Genius and getting better

  • son that girl is terrin it up thats pure skill!!!

  • This is pure American music. The banjo and the dobro are not even made elsewhere. Sierra shows that it will be around for a long time.

  • Sierra Hull is the best. Greetings from MX

  • That little girl on the mandolin is AWESOME!!!

  • que grandes sonn^^

  • Goosebumps

  • my old hen is a good old hen...

  • dammnn.. i wish i could play the fiddle. i need to teach myself but my only problem is i don't have enough patience. lol. these people are the reason i love bluegrass so much!

  • Wow. I is just too amazing watching them all play. They are fantastic!

  • I...WOW... How Cool is That!? yea, I just need More!..

  • Damn!

    That little girl friggin ROCKS!

    AWESOME!

  • AKUS is a superstar band. Great to see a young Sierra Hull. She is a remarkable talent.

  • Oh wow!! AMAZING!!! That's a lot of fun! Loved it! It's nice to see (and hear) such great things happening in American music. :)

  • Holy shamolie! The best female fiddler in the world with the best female mandolin/guitar player in the world together on stage... almost too much talent to comprehend. Is this great music, or what? Thanks to the Celtic immigrants to America who bought us this musical heritage.

  • The joy in all this is just inspiring !!! Thanks for the clip . Guy

  • beautiful

  • This is an anthem the little one's scared about.

  • This wonderful bluegrass music has its roots in the amazing folk music from England,Ireland, and Scotland, so as a European, you can take pride in the part you played in our musical heritage.

  • This still blows me away ..I would like to see a stage containing more talent than that one ...

  • Golly Miss Molly. These guys are good. This is like The Out Of Town Boys videos. Both great bands.

  • if ever an american doubts his historic background, well, here it is !!!!

being a european I am jealous as we have'nt got this quality at all.

Alisson Krauss, Union Station, Sierra Hull, holy shit, you lucky bastards !

  • Many of us 'Muricans very much appreciate what these folks do, including their pursuit of excellence and avoidance of industry marketeering.

    They're really world treasures, IMHO.

  • Alisons violin playing is beautiful. I play myself and THAT is not very easy :P. I love the sound of the banjo to :).

  • I don't play the banjo, and used to hate it till AKUS

  • Brilliant

  • Beutiful music!!

  • Wow THIS is what You Tube is all about! Precious video. Made these old ears smile!

  • Great stuff! Best wishes to one and all from Jarrahdale in wonderful Western Australia.

  • Wow!Amazong!

Alison, Union Station and Sierra is so great players.

  • The "little kid" is Sierra Hull, now a young lady and one of the top mandolin players in Country music.

  • Excellent, especially the little kid on the mandolin. Was that tune really 'Cluck Old Hen'? Sounded more like Cripple Creek to me.

  • i love listening to alison play fiddle!

  • Ron Block is a master.

  • It is a joyful music.

  • Love this! What year is this from?

  • Sierra Hull is playing the Mandolin...very, very well!!

  • Hyper, HYper, HYPER, from Hungary!

  • thanks fowl owl

  • what is the name of the instrument the lil girl is playing

    thank you

  • Mandolin

  • it's pretty crazy to think how good that band really is...ranks up there with any "super band" ever

  • JERRY DOUGLAS always a pro...

  • めちゃくちゃかっこいい!!

    very very cool!!

  • I'm not sure which I like better--Alison's voice or her fiddle playing! I guess I'm a fan of both!

  • Yeah, it is funny how the attention Allisons Fiddle Playing seems to take a backseat to the Attention that her Voice attracts. The voice of a Godess Angel, no doubt, but she is a world class oustanding fiddle player as well.

  • Indeed! :)

  • Wonderful Alison Kraus. She behaves like the elder sister!

  • Sierra Hull is amazing! all are amazing! I luv bluegrass music!

  • is this one called montana slim ?

  • Dang I miss Bluegrass,no i'm i'm not homesick... maybe I am ???

  • WOW love this Video thank you so much
