Because normal people have a custom that one payment is sufficient and they take turns. Everyone paying for their own food looks dumb.

Yes, it causes more problems, but serving and being served is a way of giving and being given, compromise etc. not having compromises even as little as paying for meals means you want no part in the world you clearly live in.

Paying your own doesn't look dumb. A lot of people do it that way because then you dont have to feel bad if you order a steak or something expensive and all they feel like getting is a sandwich or something cheap.

@Dean100able splitting the bill is like saying, we're casual friends but, that's it. In the Albanian culture, two recipients of food or anything that costs money insist that they pay for the entire bill themselves as a gesture of gratitude for the others friendship. It's a token of good faith and respect. However, I agree with you about people being greedy today. Doug and Carey should have been happy and enjoyed their friends house. However every sitcom is subject to propaganda so... yeah.
