  • man scofield's playing is so good it makes you wanna cry!

  • See it: It´s gospel and high level at the same time.

  • John Scofield is the RENAISSANCE MAN of modern times....

Thank goodness he picked up the git -tar .. Instead of say, a paint brush. God Bless him.....

  • Hurt in a car? Call Ricky Fataar!

  • Huge Scofield fan, since Electric Outlet, but why couldn't he get

    authentic GOSPEL musicians???

They are around, and definitely have the facility to deal with the tunes.

He could've had Andre Crouch, or any of the greats from the Hawkins era.

Any of the guitar based gospel denominations, like

Church of the Living God would have destroyed this!!!

This just seems like fru-fru gospel lite, lite extry!!!

  • @melrhyne But Scofield didn't want to simply make a gospel record. Listen to what he says, he started out wanting to make a blues record and changed course as the process went on. He is also not a particularly religious guy, and just wanted to make music with top class musicians who live in the Big Easy. It works as it is. Christ, does their have to be an argument about 'authenticity' here?

  • @melrhyne Maybe because he didn't really want to make a typical gospel record. Love it.

  • @tortoiseland

    Thanks for your comment!

I'm not sure what "typical" gospel is...

Nowadays, gospel is as diverse as pop, with Jazz strains, Funk strains, and even some Metal.

I totally understand wanting to do something a little different from the norm, but gospel, like

reggae, is deceptively easy, and have definitive sonorities, that make up it's sound!

NOW- he could have used the same arrangements and some of the amazing gospel musicians available to us.

All in all, still a good recording!

  • I had the chance to hear this incredible band (Scofield, Cleary, Porter Jr, Higgin) last friday in México and I am impressed by the intensity of the interpretation! They are amazing! I hope all the wonderful jazz, blues and gospel musicians of all over the world find México to be a good venue place!!! We want you guys to come here more often!

  • john scofield broke the rules of jazz! I think that this has the best feeling of all.

  • Anyone knows something about that "weird vibrato" thing John is doing here and there? Thanks :)

  • @fracarciofo I think that he performs this stunt on the outer strings (either the lowor the high e string) flipping them off the side of the fretboard. not sure though. sometimes he also rapidly kicks on the chorus pedal for a second.

  • Scofield's style has always had New Orleans written all over it. I just love this idea so much, can't wait to buy it!

  • Love Scofield's sound!

  • Det finns tre all got it: Pat Metheny, John Scofield, and Scott Henderson. Skål !

  • Tjena ! Det är kul tycker jag att Scofield inte gör en besviken. Han har sitt språk och kunskap och jag "just love him". Gospel är the final stop maybe?

  • Jeg håber, at han smutter tilbage til jazzen : )

  • I was a little disappointed at first when I heard this CD. Don't get me wrong, I've been to the gospel tent @ the NOJHF a few times and it cooks. But this seems to be growing on me. I have to hand it to the man. He is the most versatile guitarist I have ever met and one of the nicest people as well.

  • Buy the album you f*%kers, don't download it for free.

  • 3:40 oh yeah.....

  • what are you talking about?

  • Scofield sounds like Jeff Bridges

  • Hahaha!

  • Was at the show in Atlanta on 4/21. Very cool arrangements and blend of musicians. A great show overall!

  • NAME ONE OTHER JAZZ ROCK GOSPEL GROUP? see . . .

    LOL

  • The Word w/ Robert Randolph and John Medeski

  • TOUCHE . . . . gd band. they only made one album tho, right?

  • Yeah. Kind of a thrown together project, as is this one. It wouldn't surprise me if the Piety Street jazz band only makes one album. Probably due to the fact that the musicians involved (in both bands) like to do tons of different things, and also perhaps due to the fact that jazz-rock-gospel isn't exactly taking over the airwaves (I was able to quickly name ONE other band, as for the second one, uhh...ummm).

  • I was there at the Paradiso and it was a wonderful show. Sco's a genius.

  • scofield is a king

  • nice one!

  • thank you for posting this. beautiful stuff.
