Hi Graham, I've done many tests for different recording sessions and came to the same conclusion as yours. Perhaps angling the mic slightly depending on the player, etc. Perfect info! (I wish I found this video when you posted! Alas, no.)
One question I do have; When you get a great acoustic recording and the only issue is the guitarists strums/picking hand are coming through in the mix, what's the best way to kill the harsh strums without killing the acoustic vibrance?
Awesome thanks for the tips, busy experimenting - but don't have a decent condenser mic, just a cardoid dynamic - I use the acoustic line in on the mixer to bring up the brightness slightly but I'm in a noisy area so I pick up a lot of external noise (even the computer fan!).
...what an awfully nice man ! ...lol. ...seriously, i spent 3 months building a studio, buying expensive recording gear, setting it all up etc...then i remembered i couldnt play the guitar...what a plonker i am ! ...lol..deary me ...cuhhh !!!
Terrific video, you are very unique, what I mean is that you are very helpful. I am an old guy. Veteran of the old analog days. Yeah, really an ancient human. I recently got myself a computer with Pro Tools 9 and I am having a blast.
Good video, well explained. There's a lot of shite vids around that teach the wrong things and let's not even get to the 'expert village' ones.
I like that you mentioned blending mic position sounds. The only one thing I would advise is not rule out including the direct line from the electro-acoustic. I actually use a small condenser mic and a direct line, mixing between the two... (but like you said near the end, it's your advice on the starting point and you won't get any arguments from me :)
Wow ! What a wonderful discovery! I think I found you on itunes podcast-that led me here-thank you Graham for these EXCELLENT tips and vids! Great job!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Really helpful with a no nonsense approach-all the best to you!
Why can't I hear any of the room when you play your guitar? Doesn't the mic you're using to mic the guitar pick up the room, too? Did you process the audio or something? That's the problem I have. I get way too much room sound when I mic the guitar.
@alawrence89 You don't hear the room because the mic is so close to the guitar. No processing on the guitar at all. Straight out of Pro Tools. If you want to get rid of the room sound, mic your guitar from a foot away. Might help.

@SoundWave4000 (argh! not enough typing space!)
I personally use a MF cut @235 +/- and a HMF @ 1k +/- (both at a Q of 8 +/- and a -15db +/-)
I'd love to know your thoughts.

Why can you only hear the guitar? If i record it, i can kinda hear ambient things.
JYUkulele 1 year ago
@JYUkulele If you are further away from the guitar you will pick up more of the room sound.
