  • great man

  • @mtsn You didn't say that it CAN be played with a strat you said that it WAS a strat. Of course it can be played with a strat is can be played with anything and no a strat bridge cannot get that needle like tone that you hear in "this charming man" that's something particular to the tele. I know what a strat sounds like, I have one.

  • Awesome cover, instructions confusing but thankfully I can pause and play :)

  • Hi Andy awesome tune just struggling to see what your playing on first Corus could you plead send me the tab it's from the 2 min 8 sec mark. Would really appreciate it thanks

  • I believe that marr actually recorded this song with a telecaster. Most of the songs on the second record was done on a tele.

  • @1con0clast Strat. Source: smithsonguitar site.

  • @mtsn Wrong, it's a telecaster. I play guitar and I know what a strat sounds like. It's definitely a Tele. Besides, Johnny Marr is quoted as saying that he used a tele on most of the second record and in particular on "This Charming Man". He said he knows that most people thought it was a Rickenbacker but that it was a telecaster. Also, a Strat sounds NOTHING like the guitar sound in "This Charming Man". Any guitar player will tell you that.

  • @1con0clast I play guitar too and actually it can be played with a strat and even a Jag (there's more than one video of Marr playing it with a Jag I guess) and very few people can actually notice the subtle differences. I own a Variax and it can sound pretty close with the Strat bridge. People are used to the blues sound of the Strat (neck), but it's not always like that how it sounds....

  • @mtsn 'This Charming Man' was the first record where I used those highlife-sounding runs in 3rds. I'm tuned up to F# and I finger it in G, so it comes out in A. There are about 15 tracks of guitar. People thought the main guitar part was a Rickenbacker, but it's really a '54 Tele"

  • @andybitt Youre a genius , thankyou

  • nice playing mate ,tricky tune you pull it of well

  • Are you related to Karl Pilkington?

  • Which EFFECTS do you use to play this song???

    Good lesson Thanks ^^

  • anyone know why this track is detuned? Its strange to see.

  • @Chizzbuut So that the song is in a comfortable key for the singer's range. This is played (usually) with a capo on the 2nd fret, unless I'm mistaken...

  • @geofftayloruk yeah i know all that but the recording of charming man for example is just ever so slightly detuned on capo 2, not exactly on capo 2, or 1, or whatever. Kinda like on capo 1.8, i found it pretty wierd.

  • HOW DO YOU DO THAT?!!

  • Great class thanks !!

  • actually it was played on a telecaster contrary to popular belief, you're playing the initial verse riff wrong too, it opens up the bottom string. see my video demonstration.

  • Thanks a bunch for posting this. Excellent teaching work, took me about 2 hours to get it down. I'll have to post a video of me playing it now...lol.

  • THANKYOUTHANKYOU You help me out much on the intro :DDDDD i subbed

  • I get my tuner , and set it to about 432 instead off 440 and tune just like normally, then a capo at 2 if i like, works pretty fine :)

  • superb lesson, ansolutely spot and superbly taught, my hat i take off to you sir!!

  • @leonardjohnny67 And I doff my cap equally in your direction sir. Pleased to have been of service. :-)

  • Fuck this shit! I wanna hear the song!

  • Thanks for the lesson, this has been really helpful.

  • Just subbed... fantastic lesson

  • I think that this is a good video. I'm not a big fan of the Smiths but my mum asked me to learn how to play it for her so I just did

  • amazing, wanted to play that for years and you have made it possible. kind regards.

  • great lesson.thanks

  • uberlethergy. You must be very very good. Can't wait until you post a masterclass (though I suspect we might be waiting a long, long time!)

  • uberlethergy....you are a guitar god

  • uberlethergy....great comment... you must be really, really good!!! Even better than Johnny Marr (probably). In fact, why don't you post a masterclass to show us all how it should really be done. Can't wait (though i'm guessing we'll all be waiting till the end of time for that to happen!) Dick.

  • wow you are by far one of the best teachers here on youtube ! please continue to make videos

and your guitar sounds awesome !

  • Excelente clase, muchisimas gracias.

  • Massive help!!! Cheers

  • choppy qwards

  • It would be really sweet to hear you play the whole song in one go. I play guitar myself and this clip will definitely help me play the song better, but the truth is that you play this song way better (the tuning, the sound, the timing) than any other video on youtube at the moment.

  • with the picked chords is it meant to be: d11,g9,b9,g9?.

  • @eugene123423 that is what I am wondering also. This is the part of the song that has stumped me forever for some reason.

  • thanks great help bud.well played

  • Sorry mate, your notes are in the right place but you strum doubles when you should pick singles. It's Johnny's logo for fast single notes. It may sound strummed but I assure you they're picked.

  • Actually, I pick sooo fast that they just look and sound like a strum. :-)

  • finally im able to play this song in the correct way, after all these years

    thank you so muuuuuuuuuuch!

  • Amazing video man! Incredibly helpful.

I've nearly got the fingering and progression down, its just a matter of getting the timing and pace.

You should do The Beatles 'And Your Bird Can Sing'. I can't figure it out for the life of me and it seems like a similar type of guitar riff.

Anyway, keep it up! Thanks so much! I love this song and have been dying to learn it.

  • Very well played sir.

Johnny actually used a 54 Tele as the main guitar on the recording, so your sound is probably a lot closer than that of a Ric.

Very well played once again !

  • Sounds like you know your stuff sir, so I'll take your compliment as high praise indeed. :-)

    Thanks

  • Thanks so much for this! I have wanted to be able to play this song for something like 20 years and now I can!!

  • Thanks for your comment. Feedback like yours is why I make these videos and I'm so pleased that I helped you finally learn this. It is a great song and I had great fun working it out myself. Its a real challenge to play.

  • great video cheers pal

  • The song is a masterpiece. you can't teach it in under 5 minutes. sorry.

  • @ajm1992maskill

    and yet he did.

Ok so there might be some variations he didnt mention. Im not sure but i bet there are, would have to check. Anyway it was definitely helpful to me and after 30 mins of practicing im pretty much able to play the song now minus one or two details.

  • nice job man, keep them coming plz

  • YOUR BACK!!!!!!!!!

  • nice lesson thanks.

can you do, How soon is now, please.
