Brilliant video and I liked the way it showed it going from day to night and the different lighting. I agree with you, I think the orange lights are cool.
Question, how many flash guns did you use? I'm sure my single SB600 wouldn't cope at all in this situation
I agree with Long exsposure would not work for this shoot your subject would ghost.. you need quick shutter speed and ideally to track the subject with the flash... just like chase jarvis did for his shoot.. mind you had had some monster flash heads as well... great video dom and tutorial... great result on your final image you put through gimp.. well done.
Awesome vid Dom. I don't think you need any tips from anyone really. Experience is key and that only comes with practice and you certainly have plenty of both! Great work keep inspiring us please!
you could also make a long exposure and make a stroboscopic photo... it would be nice...
a long exposure to match with the ambient light (it there was any),,, and the take the flash on hand and make it fire several times on the long exposure
unfortunatly with that what happens is that the jumper becomes very see through. each consecutive flash the previous image of the person becomes more faded. so if it is a 6 flash image the first captures of the jumper become like ghosts. better doing it in post production like my other video
yes but when the flash goes again and the skiier is not there then they become fadded and the background lights seep in. times that by 6 and ....oh why am i bothering! how about you go and SHOW me wrong at a snowboarding event!
Personally I would make frames much tighter and also use filter on flash to match WB with ambient light - then mix this two sources of light together (bit longer shutter speed).
filter on flash to match ambient light? it was outside, flash is set to the same light, but when the sun went away the only light was the orange light from the buildings surrounding. the more blue light from the flash helps the boarder stick out in the image than get lost in the orange.
Sorry, I forgot to specify, that I was writing about pictures taken after dusk.
The problem is that this orange colour of the lights, in the background, is horrible. I believe you could get better results if you put on gel filter on the flash and set the WB manually latter on in lighroom (of course picture supposed be taken as RAW).
As far as I am concerned you own SB-900 - the TN-A1 filter which is added to this flash as standard would probably do, if not there is plenty of other filters on internet - personally I recommend to get some of them as they make pictures much nicer in random light at relatively low cost :)

it wont become very see through because the flash will stop/freeze the skier motion against the black sky.

dude i have tried that technique several times and i have never had a problem with it...
also When i tried i used a long snoot on the flash... to avoid exactly what you had said above...

i think the orange lights are cool, not horrible. also you can white balance out those lights, as there is no white in them, they are orange lights.
