This is really good. It came from a record that is long gone, but I've got it. I loved this song. Sitting in church as a kid, playing with a hymnal during the preaching. Drawing on the envelopes. Became a steel player. Played in bars for 25 years.
Porter had it right. Still don't like church much.
Hehehe it's funny that some people still think Merle was serious when he sang Okie from Muskogee. Great article in the most recent issue of Rolling Stone will set you all straight he he he
Porter was great...too bad Merle is a obama supporter now. Either Merle has turned his back on conservatives to try to get a new audience, or he was pulling the wool over us all when he sang Okie and Fightin' Side.
Haggard don't need to look for fans. CAN'T FIND ANYONE WHO DOSN'T LIKE THE HAG. He is the best. A great Amarican legend with a mind of his own,And not afaid to speak his mind.Anything he doe's is ok with me.
Okie was written as a satire. That is pretty well documented Harry44. I've read quotes from Merle's closest friends that say he is unpredictable.. you never know what he'll do next. The thing that's clear is that Merle wants what is best for this great nation. Merle is one of the greatest musicians in American music history.
You don't hear music like that anymore. The artists of that era sang from experience. Their songs weren't just words, they were often personal testimonies about their own life experiences. Somewhere along the way, the producers in Nashville lost sight of what country music is really about. It's been a tragic loss for many of us.
I whole-heartedly agree with this statement. I am hopeful that Jamey Johnson can revive this lost era of music. Of course, they rarely play him on mainstream radio anymore because he's been so outspoken against Nasvhille's output of music.
@Tarten46 Sadly, that's the truth!I realize everything must evolve, for better or for worse, and country music is due to go full circle back to tradition.
One of the best vidio's i've seen . Tells a story, oh so many entertainers end up like this. even me at one time. Haggard is fantastic. Makes me think of Kieth Whitley. And George Jones and so many more. "C"

I LOVE this song. I just listen to this everyday. Too bad people have to grow old and then leave us.
They both are so young here, their voices so clear and strong.
Guess because I'm 80 yrs. YOUNG everyone looks young to me. lol
Thanks so much for posting this.

Oh let's not get into politics now.
THE HAG DON'T HAVE TO PROVE ANYTHING TO ANYONE. HE'S ALREADY LEFT HIS MARK ON EVERYONE THAT LOVES REAL COUNTRY.
He's a man that stands up for what he beleives in.
If YOU can't do that then somethin's wrong!!!!
