dude i fished a drop shot rig in Washington with my uncle, cousin and another dude and we caught over 100small mouth and a couple walleyes, i caught over 20 fish myself with like 8 over 16inches and 2 over 20inches, best fishing of my life and it was only about 5hrs
@tubefish123 You usually have the rod tighten down to the lead weight, and you either feel the fish bite through the rod (or the rod tip moves), or you can see the line moving if you fish it slack.
You don't. You find a spot that holds fish and you decide how to catch them. He could catch those with many different rigs. He was showing how to fish the dropshot. Good thing about the dropshot is that you can keep a bait in front of a fish for a long time. Sometimes it takes a while for them to decide they've seen enough and they whack it. Also, you can fish smaller finesse baits in deeper water without ruining their action with bullet weights.
Does drop shotting work in shallow grassy areas? I don't have a boat, and the lake I normally fish is shallow around the shore. I catch a lot of bass right on the shoreside edge of the grass, like 5 yards out and maybe 4 feet of water. Its usually top water for me but I feel like drop shotting that same edge would be even better! maybe a little shallow though?
@hotdogr88 You can catch fish with dropshot in any depth. Ive caught fish on it from 0.5-60FT on the dropshot. But if the fish are shallow, Im throwing topwater! Love seeing them smack my bait on top!
@hotdogr88 To clearify, you can catch them on the dropshot in any depth they are in. If they're not there you wont catch em of course LOL. Also they will have to be in the mood to bite, but if they're in shallow water they are almost always biting. Atleast thats what I think. Good luck.
waht was the worm that is baitfish colored like blue and silver? sorry if i missed it in the video, that worm looks like it would really work good. great video
Al, you are setting the hook way to hard. All you have to do is simply lift the rod, and the hook is set well enough to avoid the hook being thrown. Since you are using light wire hooks, there is no need in setting the hook hard. And if you give the fish slack before you set the hook, the hook can sometimes turn sideways in the fish's mouth, giving you a poor hookset.
@TwinStatesBassClub You aren't serious are you? You are going to tell a Fishing Hall of Fame angler how to fish a drop-shot rig?
I'm not saying you are a poor angler, I'm sure you know your stuff, but I would just keep my mouth shut when it comes to telling Al Lindner how he should fish.
Great video. I have used a drop shot with Gulp Alive 3" minnows in 3 feet of water on a small reservoir & caught a lot of bass. Still waiting for a real big bass but who cares, this method is easy and effective.
Females are typically larger. During the spawn the sex can be identified by what the fish is doing. Males sweeping out nests and then guarding them after the spawn.
Other than that you just watch to see which washroom they come out of.
Generally a sportsman will not target the nest guarding males. That said, I don't agree with fishing during the spawn into the post spawn. As mentioned before, females are not able to take the stress. In most zones in Ontario, where I live and fish, the season is closed from Jan 1 to the last Saturday in June protecting the spawn.
In southern states it's argued that in large reservoirs and such that the spawn occurs in different parts of the lake at different time and spans longer.
You're quite right it. If conditions are good and stable they will begin spawining rituals as early as May. The seasons in Ontario for bass usually close in late November or end of December and remain closed untill the end of June. Not much risk of hurting too much in the winter and cold water but because of the severes change in conditions between ice out and the beginning of the spawn the bass's habits are condensed as opposed to being over several months like in the south.
wow so thats how its like up north? well i live in the metro so its pretty good down here. the bass and walleye will hit like crazy if you're on the spot.
"Geof" it dosent hurt them as much as you think the males go back to the nest 100% of the time females i do see it hurting them more than males ive seen big females die after tournys in spawn of post spawn tournys beinng so stressed out males dosent really bother them.
@Bass1ism I would agree with the comments of toast729 that the bass are under more stress due to the condensed time period between winter and spawn. The other consideration is that the male is guarding the nest from predator fish like crappie and perch. They are very agressive while guarding the nest. To take them off the nest, even for a short period of time, usually results in the loss of fry. Ultimately having a negative impact on the fishery.
As far as the bite, you will usually just feel the rod get heavy all of a sudden where it's been weightless before. The kind of rod isn't that important, spinning or baitcasting work ok, as long as the rod is sensitive enough that you can twitch it and make the lure jiggle just a little bit.
I have used this technique many times and have only caught one bass while my dad has way outfished me over the same structure. what droes the bite feel like and what kind of rod should i use?
Great tips as always Al! I use this rig year around while others feel its just to lazy of a technic. When I hit my local ponds, I try look for a weedy bank, toss it out on the outside edge, it works like no other, several bass from 3-6 lbs! While all small waters like get hammered drop shotting is very productive shallow and deep!
When you are using weight, as in a drop shot rig, cast it out, let it sink to the bottom. start reeling in the slack. while you reel in the slack give it some soft twitches. you will feel when the weight lifts of the bottom and let it drop back down
You can find these products at Gander Mountain, although to be more general you should be able to find them at nearly all major sporting goods stores.

So...let me get this straight...
The male fish are trying to stop their eggs from being devoured by predators.
The females are exhausted and recuperating after spawning.
And some fat-arsed bozos still think it's a great day out wrenching them from the water.
Sheesh.
