We used to joke Bridgemen could kick your ass in drums or just plain kick your ass. This was the DOMINANT line of the early 80s and had an enormous impact on every part of the game.
Best Dam drum line ever...I know, I was there. Played lead soprano and watching them do laps playing certain parts of the show until it was perfect. Was something only the strong minded can endure and survive. Great job guys, I loved playing with you all, Vinnie.
@vaper65 best drum line ever? buwhahahahahahahaha.... not even close.... Spirit blew them out of the water, double the size, playing things NO ONE had played and a hell lot cleaner.... then came the 80's.... hell, even by 1988 standards, Bridgemen wouldnt have even made top 20....
never liked bridgemen's drumline, crappy writing, horrible drum tuning, and nothing exciting... boring fucking line, just like your life.... hence why your wife gets fucked by a nigger.
I was in my rookie year on tenors with the Freelancers this year and got to see them up close and personal in Bloomington, IN. Not quite as clean as '82 when I saw them in Montreal as a spectator, but still no one threw down beats like this that year. Delucia knew how to write charts that really laid down a groove; something completely lacking in drum corps today.
Great talent in that line. Some of those guys in the championship bridgemen lines when on to teach and produce strong drumlines in the top 12 in later years. I guess that why we still remember them for how good they were.
i remember this year, they played a warmup show in clearwater, fl, and i was blow away at how the entire corp conveyed cool...i'm talkng film noire mickey spillane cool. and the drumline, man the freakin drumline were simply gods of gods. i don't care how the bd's sway today or whatever else, NO drumline will ever compare to the bridgemen in the black market juggler years. none.
@modestohomeboy they tied with Spirit in 80 and 81 in drums.... lol.... seriously... who the fuck is short, sausage fingers, fat boy dennis delucia compared to the father of clean and smooth grooving drum corps drumming Tom Float.... EVERYONE knows who Float is, he's legend... say DeLucia's name and people go "who?"
@JessOnTheRun Sounds like a hater to me. Did the Bridgemen cut you? Truthfully I have heard of Delucia from my band days at the largest college of music in the country (1975). I thought Tom Float was something you got a Dairy Queen.

@JessOnTheRun You bastard Dennis Delucia does incredible writing, he is the reason why Bunnell smashed all of those high school records in 2006. Who the fuck is Tom Float and who the fuck are you to say anything about the Bridgemen? It sounds like we do have a hater and so fucking what about the Blue Devils we all know the Cavaliers could take them any day hell even the Bluecoats could kick their ass. My band directer drummed with the Bridgemen and the Muchachos who were much better at that time
@JessOnTheRun Besides that the Bridgemen also hold the world record for the highest percussion score ever at a competition, the only reason why the Bridgemen left was because of all the politicing that goes on in DCI. They were forced out like the Muchachos. The same thing with USSBA why do you think Dartmouth High School wins the National Title for Group 5 Open every year? Because they know how to politic, Bunnell High School gets the shaft because of that.
@JessOnTheRun You wouldn't be able to hold any of these guys harnesses let alone their jackets, so why don't stay over there and let the real men drum, while you just sit and mope on what could've been for you and your living in the past. You racist bastard.

Let's face it... The name Tom Float means something to DCI... Dennis DeLucia means "that short, fat jewey looking old guy that plays second fiddle to Steve Rondo on Broadcast" LMAO
Float? DCI innovator which ALL lines still credit him for creating the modern marching percussion method... there has never been clean like "float clean" which is real dci terminology.
ahhh... the jealous little dweeby old schoolers shedding tears over their little slingerland tri/toms and 8th note book.
The Bayonne Bridgemen drumline 80,81,82 blew Blue Devils right out of the water! - not just with technique, but they could also groove like no one else.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
actually, 82 Dev line far surpassed bridgemen... sorry, kid but when flam drags on bass drums with much more nuance and attention to texture and dynamics, executed very clean... you cant compete... hence why most everything today in DCI is based on Tom Float's influence, not broken down, poorly tuned, slurred, dirty, alternating stick heights of the bridgemen... lol.
btw, 1980 Spirit of Atlanta (also Float line) kicked bridgemen's wimpy jersey ass back to the ghetto they came from.
"ignorance"... or your presumptuous disposition... I work with Dennis DeLucia going on my 7th year... trust me son, I have all the sheet music for this, advant guarde and star of indiana... his years... you have no idea what you are talking about... quarter and eith note bass drum parts are a bit jr high, my friend... and trust me, i wouldnt cry from these parts... i marched 88, 89 devs and 90 cadets... think i have the chops thing convered. ;-)
oh really? you know my name buddy... again, how presumptuous of you... in fact got me two dci championship rings and 3 high percussion... by the way, delucia said some very nice things about our percussion program on dci broadcast ;-)
If you had the chops thing "convered" then you would acknowledge the sheer skill and talent of this line and the degree of difficulty with which they played... and working with DeLucia you would know that he is a percussion mastermind who was the innovator for drumming during that time.
Respect what is good--they weren't the top line 3 years straight for nothing.
nope, you are only projecting... dont be so intolerant and hateful... not everyone see's things the same as you... after all, not all of us are that status quo and boring... im sure you like your life (lol)
First of all, your immaturity aside, forget personal attacks.
Second, everyone might not think the same as I do... but I'd have to say I'm in the majority on the issue of this Bridgemen drum line being one of the best ever. Their titles speak for themselves, which means I at least have the support of the judges who gave them the championships... Therefore, maybe it's your view that is a bit skewed.
personal attacks, like some of your online support from guitar phantom?... ahhh, when it works in your favor, right? the simplicity of average humans never ceases to amaze me.
you dont get it obviously... a "view" "opinion" "perception" can never be skewed... just because it differs from yours. That is why you arent truly and fully alive... you arent aware of the broader world around you.
Are you deranged? I marched in 80 and 82 and Bridgemen took top drums both years. I remember Bridgemen selling copies of the "One tick" show at their souvie stand in 82. And that judge was Ron Goodheart, one of the ballbuster execution judges of all time. He didn't let squat get past him.
you mean rod goodheart... there is no ron goodheart, idiot. and rodney goodheart quoted "ive never seen a drumline play the things that i have like those under the direction of tom float"... lol... OWNED
The only thing you seem to own is a 72 Chevy Vega, pal. Just because I don't remember Ron vs. Rod doesn't mean crap. Jeez, what a halfwit you are. And Rod Goodheart may have said that, but it was still the Bridgemen who took top drums. And nothing really is going to change that you knuckle-dragging, polyester-wearing, stoop-gait, slack-jawed pederast. Crap, I bet you were a cymbal player.

"cymbal player" LOL... , try snare in both Devs & Cadets, staffed for cavies and star (count the drum titles and championship rings, pal.something you have neither of). now go get a life before I slap you
Oh, slapping is about par for the course with a sissyboy puss like you. And while we're at, since calling names seems to be your style, I'm not sure I'd be slapping labels on anybody else. Sounds like this is the only life you have.

is that really the best you have? typical, cliche, unoriginal comebacks that a 13 yr old could come up with? sorry, kid...you arent even a good alpha male... you are basically no competetion. By the way, what "SOUNDS" like this is the only life I have? WTF does that really mean? what did you hear? what life? define "this". or in lieu of intelligent logical thought, you always talk in such empty, shallow riddles? says a lot about your proximity and social circles ;-) Now go seek and obtain a life
Wow this brings back some great memories. I was a member of this drumline and man it was hot that night in Miami. Alot of great drummers have marched in the Bridgemen over the years:Clem Burke (Blondie), Pat Petrillo, Tommy Igoe, Eddie Drayton, Mark Teofilio, Pete Castellano, Jeff Prosperie, Ed Toth (Doobie Bros./Vertical Horizon) and many other talented dudes. Too many to list. Thanks for the comments guys. Special props to Bobby Thompson, Dennis DeLucia, Bob Dubinski & staff over the years.
Jeff McKay!!! Black market juggler who would of known he would have gotten his start in the infamous Oakland Crusaders!!!! glad to see another Canadian in an amazing drum line!!!!
Just taking a look at the snareline...those are not some cats you want to cross the wrong way. A few very good friends of mine marched Bayonne in the late 60's and then in the 1980's and watching this very drum solo along with BD 1990 made me want to march corps in 1995. Absolute entertainment. Hearing the stories about the great Cavi/Bayonne throwdown in the 60's and Father Donovan make me wish I had marched back in those days!
outstanding, best percussion routine ever imho, i can remember when finals were shown on tv here in the uk fot the first time just before xmas 83. myself, my bro and friends from our corps gathered at our house to watch it all,, i remember everybody looking at each other after this and asking if we had just saw that, every one of us couldnt believe it.
just a pity the sound and picture is a bit out of synch on this clip
I caught 'em at a local show in Indy that year. At warm-ups, the other corps' drummers all looked like anyone's nice suburban kids.
The Bridgemen, though, were terrifying: big, thuggish dudes with huge arms bulging out of their tees, tattoos, dark shades, concealed packs of Pall Malls...
Then, they ran "Black Market Juggler".
I honestly don't remember anything else about the contest after that, nor do any of the fellow kid drummers who went with me.
The editing sucked! We hardly get to see any of the "stick work" that Rondinero talks about in the beginning. I was at this and completely blown away. It's hard to get even a tenth of the impact looking at this vid...good post, though.
I can tall you yeah, things have changed- was even hard for Westshore alumni and myself to relax and enjoy like we used to back in the day. And this *is* why we do this!
This was so awesome. The Bridgemen practiced (full day) at my high school for the local DCI competition that year. My h.s. drumline buddies and I sat for 3-4 hours, just 10 ft away, and watched this unbelievable production, over and over. In the shade in Charlotte, 90F with a coca-cola ICEE ... that's good stuff.
Wow! I was there! I was 16 and had just flew back from Berklee the night before. I had about 3 hours sleep and then left on a bus to go down there. I was blown away. DCI made a lasting impression on me. Esp. The Bridgemen. Awesome drumline! In my eyes they were the best corp. there. A blast to watch.
This has got to be one of the best drum solos of all time.
The single handed stick work is just phenomenal. I saw these guys live several times, and while the whole corps was always good, their drumline was the Neil Peart of DCI!
The 1980 line...pretty good line....not the best ...but pretty good.

it's good, but very easy to see why blue devils kicked their asses. these guys would get used as back door mats by west coast corps
JessOnTheRun 3 years ago
The Bayonne Bridgemen drumline 80,81,82 blew Blue Devils right out of the water! - not just with technique, but they could also groove like no one else.

actually, 82 Dev line far surpassed bridgemen... sorry, kid but when flam drags on bass drums with much more nuance and attention to texture and dynamics, executed very clean... you cant compete... hence why most everything today in DCI is based on Tom Float's influence, not broken down, poorly tuned, slurred, dirty, alternating stick heights of the bridgemen... lol.
btw, 1980 Spirit of Atlanta (also Float line) kicked bridgemen's wimpy jersey ass back to the ghetto they came from.

clean? yeah, as one judge said "its hard to evaluate all those slurred sixes... it all sounds like buzz rolls"
then again, its easy to clean sex tuplets, 16th note timing, triple pulsed and buzz rolls.
LMAO...
these guys drum like jr high schoolers.

I have the sheet music from my dad who was in this line from '81-'83.... you would cry if you saw what they were playing.
... just a little more complicated than sextuplets and buzz rolls... your ignorance amazes me.
bronkoscr12 2 years ago
"ignorance"... or your presumptuous disposition... I work with Dennis DeLucia going on my 7th year... trust me son, I have all the sheet music for this, advant guarde and star of indiana... his years... you have no idea what you are talking about... quarter and eith note bass drum parts are a bit jr high, my friend... and trust me, i wouldnt cry from these parts... i marched 88, 89 devs and 90 cadets... think i have the chops thing convered. ;-)
JessOnTheRun 2 years ago
People know the name DeLucia - but not your name, isn't that right? You are a nobody.
guitar1phantom 2 years ago 2
oh really? you know my name buddy... again, how presumptuous of you... in fact got me two dci championship rings and 3 high percussion... by the way, delucia said some very nice things about our percussion program on dci broadcast ;-)
what else do you have?
JessOnTheRun 2 years ago
If you had the chops thing "convered" then you would acknowledge the sheer skill and talent of this line and the degree of difficulty with which they played... and working with DeLucia you would know that he is a percussion mastermind who was the innovator for drumming during that time.
Respect what is good--they weren't the top line 3 years straight for nothing.
bronkoscr12 2 years ago
nope, you are only projecting... dont be so intolerant and hateful... not everyone see's things the same as you... after all, not all of us are that status quo and boring... im sure you like your life (lol)
JessOnTheRun 2 years ago
Dude, where's the name? What have you done on your own after being a kid in DCI?
guitar1phantom 2 years ago
First of all, your immaturity aside, forget personal attacks.
Second, everyone might not think the same as I do... but I'd have to say I'm in the majority on the issue of this Bridgemen drum line being one of the best ever. Their titles speak for themselves, which means I at least have the support of the judges who gave them the championships... Therefore, maybe it's your view that is a bit skewed.
bronkoscr12 2 years ago
personal attacks, like some of your online support from guitar phantom?... ahhh, when it works in your favor, right? the simplicity of average humans never ceases to amaze me.
you dont get it obviously... a "view" "opinion" "perception" can never be skewed... just because it differs from yours. That is why you arent truly and fully alive... you arent aware of the broader world around you.
you have a lot to learn in this life, kid.

Would like to know your opinion on Marty Hurley or John Wooton.
thanks
alipool 2 years ago
Are you deranged? I marched in 80 and 82 and Bridgemen took top drums both years. I remember Bridgemen selling copies of the "One tick" show at their souvie stand in 82. And that judge was Ron Goodheart, one of the ballbuster execution judges of all time. He didn't let squat get past him.
otterinbham 2 years ago
you mean rod goodheart... there is no ron goodheart, idiot. and rodney goodheart quoted "ive never seen a drumline play the things that i have like those under the direction of tom float"... lol... OWNED
JessOnTheRun 2 years ago
The only thing you seem to own is a 72 Chevy Vega, pal. Just because I don't remember Ron vs. Rod doesn't mean crap. Jeez, what a halfwit you are. And Rod Goodheart may have said that, but it was still the Bridgemen who took top drums. And nothing really is going to change that you knuckle-dragging, polyester-wearing, stoop-gait, slack-jawed pederast. Crap, I bet you were a cymbal player.

omg... a middle aged, over the hill, short, fat, hairy, lonely wrinkled man getting his little whiney panties in a twist and name calling like a little school nellie... what a total loser you are and you just went on to prove it. Damn, can I get some cheese with that whine? LOL... "cymbal player" LOL... , try snare in both Devs & Cadets, staffed for cavies and star (count the drum titles and championship rings, pal.something you have neither of). now go get a life before I slap you
JessOnTheRun 2 years ago

We just kinda blacked out, in awe.

No doubt! We had a Rick Beckham-written solo like that one year in the '80s, but we didn't have that get up and the pimp roll! ;-D

I haven't seen the Bridgemen for so long! Some of that shuffle and the uniforms reminds me of a bunch of pimps! ;-D It was all so mod.

The editing sucked! We hardly get to see any of the "stick work" that Rondinero talks about in the beginning. I was at this and completely blown away. It's hard to get even a tenth of the impact looking at this vid...good post, though.

These guys actually look like they're having fun, unlike the choreographed "fun" that front ensembles usually do nowadays.

It was my rookie year with Troopers and Hutch +Bayonne beat us out for finals.
adamsfall 4 years ago
This has got to be one of the best drum solos of all time.
The single handed stick work is just phenomenal. I saw these guys live several times, and while the whole corps was always good, their drumline was the Neil Peart of DCI!
What great memories!

Ditto, and Amen. Very inovative for their time. Too bad we missed the Tom work. Truly a phenominal drum line.
