I remember seeing this at the time. She brought the house down - the applause and cheers go on and on and on. I'd never seen it again until today - yet I've remembered this specific performance for 30 years. How wonderful to see it again - and find it to be just as magnificent as I remembered!

O wow...she had the eyepatch! In a lot of productions, they have her be a beautiful princess without the eyepatch, which I guess kinda makes her look more ugly or pirate like and weird. But it is clearly written by Verdi and the librettist that the character of Eboli has to have an eyepatch! Troyanos is magnificent. She is a straight mezzo soprano; no nonsense, no pretending to be a soprano with a great mezza di voce
@AmericanEvita Eboli, like everybody else in the opera-- except Posa-- was a real person. Her name was actually Ana de Mendoza, Princess of Eboli and Duchess of Pastrana, and she did lose an eye in childhood.
Absolutely incredible. I've always adored Troyanos. One of my favorite sounds. It's hard to believe she could sing this with such power when you heard her as Cherubino in Le Nozze.
5/5 - Troyanos is one of the best artists ever! Despite the power of her singing, her versatility, and total commitment, her voice always sounds flexible, lovely, and never harsh, and she never acquired one of those hideous vibratos found so commonly in the last 20 years.
Its geat to see this again! I watched this broadcast live and her performance has stayed with me all these years. It was a great night at the met...Look for the inquisitor scene between Plishka and Hines from this performance.Stupendous. Also, the actual Princess Eboli had an eye patch- her portrait in the Prado shows this.
The character is supposed to wear an eyepatch... In the heat of the drama, Troyanos used to rip it off and stay in character by keeping her left eye closed :)
The historical Eboli(Ana de Mendoza e de la Cerda) had one eye. I don't know how she lost it but she was regarded as one of the most beautiful women in Europe, despite the eye patch.
BRAVA Tatiana Troyanos ! You are a true mezzo and not and American Invention. No score for you. As for Stignani, Simionato, Callas, Crespin , Cossotto and Resnik (pity three of them are not here) you are above any contest. Let's leave the "scores" for the ones that need them.
Thanks a lot COLORATURAFAN for your kindness and generosity.
Troyanos was a great mezzo and a fantastic actress. Her voice conveyed a sense of tragedy and urgency. Her sound is so powerful, and her expression...well she looks like a Velasquez painting. The best Eboli!
Oneguin posted clips of an extraordinary recital Troyanos-Domingo at the Met.
Heard her sing it live many times. Yes, the "space" of her voice was amazing -- she had notes that hung in the air and expanded, like fireworks, completely filling the Met hall --which is a really big space. I must say, though, that she sang the Veil Song even better!
I miss not to have been able to hear her live...She is such an interesting artist. I am asking myself if the voice was really carrying that loud in the theater.
Wow, what a great singer and performer she was. This is the first one to give me goosebumps. 5/5. She knew just what to do with this aria, great technique and convincing intensity (with no hamminess).
The drama is in the voice, but I would have liked to see it more in the body too. Tempo a little fast for my liking (and much easier to sustain for the voice). 4.5/4
non ha eguali strepitosissima assoluta...la migliore dal punto di vista esecutivo e un vero e proprio animale da palcoscenico....il tutto inserito in una cornice orchestrare di grandissimo rilievo credo sia levine...
This is what great performance is all about. having the whole package.

I agree with the previous comments: so far, for my tastes, this is the most astonishing rendition of Eboli ...5/5!!!

@DalokiMauvais The loudest sound I ever heard in an opera house was the ovation for Troyanos after "O don fatale."

Just beautiful! I didn't know she had sung the role - one of the richest mezzo voices of the 20th century. Great performance, too.

Good diction. All registers blend into each other nicely. A big loss that this dramatic mezzo died relatively young. 4/4

Terrific interpretation with true pathos and fire. I think she has a great voice, but for the most part, I don't like how it is produced.
