Having been taken for a drive in both this and the M5, there's no contest. This is much better. I prefer the styling on the M5 but otherwise the jaguar pisses all over it.
And what is wrong with the british people. I see that they are afraid to be proud of being a british, may be they think it makes them a tory or right wing. So dumb. Look at the Germans and look at the Japanese, why, they are so proud of being germans and Japanese. The XFR looks way better than the M5 and feels alive when you drive it. I can not say the same of the new 5 series, it feels a bit disconnected. There's no such thing as an XFR-S. And yes I have driven a XF-R. Like I said, it wasn't that special. I do prefer German cars because they're better made and better to drive. I prefer the M5 to the Jag because it is a better all round machine. And anyway so what I like German cars over the Brits. It's my opinion. XKR-S isn't that good because they seem to have had a 'that'll do' attitude when making it. It could have been faster, more powerful and lighter but they didn't make it that way...
@CalvinS63 M5 better all round machine. are you serious. The last generation M5 could not even be driven at lower speeds in the city, the gear would give a thumping jerk every time you changed gear. I mean it was only good at very high speed, and because of that V10. And i have driven both.Thee XFR is very special, it is as good as the M5 in the bends and it is more enjoyable for everyday ride. And the XKRs was never meant to be a street racer, but a very fast sports car, and it is that.

Driven it myself, amazing car. Not surprised about the rating. It just happens to be a coincidence that we make the best cars in the world, and the best car shows in the world. I think if people don't like that, they should probably go somewhere else.

If you like every gearchange to sound and feel like it's about to brake the drivetrain whilst you headbutt the steering wheel, then it makes the perfect sports saloon.....if on the other hand you'd rather relentlessly accelerate to the muffled sound of a Nascar before enjoying hurling the thing through the next corner, then the Jaguar wins hands down!

Good review and a great car, what makes it worth the 5 stars IMO is that its an underdog which matches or in some areas even surpass the old kings of fast saloons. Looks great and most of all unique to!

@danoconnell427 Top speed is limited by a gentleman's agreement (technical issues as well) between Merc, BMW, Audi and others. If you take the limiter off it will do 198 mph.

Autocar have slammed many a British car for decades, including a large number of Jags in the past, and I'm sure they'll continue to do so. Jaguar's are reliable cars, and in many cases, more reliable than the rivals from BMW and Mercedes. The only reasons why the XFR loses the group tests in America is because the reviewers there don't appreciate anything apart from speed, and the prestige and history of the brand name. The M5 and the E63 do fast. This does fast, maybe not as well, but it does loads of other things far, far better.

@AdamsJoshua85 M3 GTS is a good car, but it's WAY too expensive to get a 5 star rating. WHat I find strangest is this peculiar attachment to Mercs, which generally drive like hearses. I've driven the current E (not a 63, though) and was completely underwhelmed. If nothing else, the E63 is so ugly you'd knock off a star for style alone. I mentioned JD Power because you accused Jaguar of building unreliable cars, which they stopped doing under Ford ownership.

This blend of indecisiveness should be a hoot to drive but still ... 7.4 from me, tops. And I'd do a 10 minute verdict and 0.0 - 10.0 grades instead of stars so my opinion/verdict would be detailed enough to be subject to criticism instead of just some short blurts of opinion leading to subjective (sponsored?) star ratings.

well first off i do understand. but i know about 10 guys with crappy ricers with a legit turbo set up and have as much HP as the GTR. but this jag will last longer than a GTR because of the fact it has less parts to break. like the turbos, and when the rich dumb *ss drives the GTR he will try to do some thing "cool" and it will break. but we both have our opinions.
You're complaining about a British car reviewed by a British magazine. Really, what do you expect? It is exactly why they give Astons and Mini Coopers good rating as well when the rest of the world knows they are mediocre overpriced cars (although Mini is not even remotely British at this point).

All these people whining about the 5 star verdict yet how many of them have driven it? I haven't, it might be a miracle for all I know or it might be a dog. I bet it's bloody good though, even if new M5 is better. Yes Autocar have always been biased towards british cars, but who can blame them for doing their bit to protect the tattered remains of the British motor industry.

I'll continue watching their videos, but the Bull $hit bias has to stop! 5 stars when a GTR, Mercedes, Audi, Porsche, and BMW receive less stars! What the fluke happened here? I'm a huge car enthusiast so I respect all brands, and I even own a Mercedes so I'm a but partial to the brand, but to deny all others is complete stupidity. On second thought... I may stay away for while.

I'm merely imposing a thought as to how this is possible that the XFR gets 5 stars. It's an okay car, albeit anything better than I've ever owned, but not worthy of greater stars than say a E63, or M3 GTS. @AdamsJoshua85 M3 GTS is a good car, but it's WAY too expensive to get a 5 star rating. WHat I find strangest is this peculiar attachment to Mercs, which generally drive like hearses. I've driven the current E (not a 63, though) and was completely underwhelmed. If nothing else, the E63 is so ugly you'd knock off a star for style alone. I mentioned JD Power because you accused Jaguar of building unreliable cars, which they stopped doing under Ford ownership.

I have to say, I'm somewhat confused by the negative response of so many people. Is it just trolling, or is there a genuine belief that the XFR can't be a class leading car?! I'm genuinely interested to know if this opinion is just based on brand image or whether it's based on first hand experience? Is it really that amazing that the Jag can be better than the M5 or E63? I suspect it's all just hot air from people who memorise the back of AutoExpress, but I'd be interested to know either way!

Rear of an Aston, front of a Hyundai. Jag wants to exploit the rebound of the global market too soon. A compromise from a brand we'd expect patience and stylish endurance of. This blend of indecisiveness should be a hoot to drive but still ... 7.4 from me, tops. And I'd do a 10 minute verdict and 0.0 - 10.0 grades instead of stars so my opinion/verdict would be detailed enough to be subject to criticism instead of just some short blurts of opinion leading to subjective (sponsored?) star ratings.

well first off i do understand. but i know about 10 guys with crappy ricers with a legit turbo set up and have as much HP as the GTR. but this jag will last longer than a GTR because of the fact it has less parts to break. like the turbos, and when the rich dumb *ss drives the GTR he will try to do some thing "cool" and it will break. but we both have our opinions.
