& I love it. Because this version makes the lyrics sound less vulnerable.
When Gary Jules does it, he changed the tempo and added a haunting piano melody, delivering the lyrics as a plea for help, or relief. So I love both versions.
I didnt like this version at first but since ive started to listen to more eighties ive become more aware of original sound and i have to admit i love it.
Thanks for reposting this. Youtube took down this video before, for some strange reason. It rocks, while the Gary Jules version sort of depresses you. I think it was intended not as just a sad song, about being defeated, as the Gary Jules does it (which is beautiful and haunting in it's own rite), But the original was more about about defiance of defeat, over coming it, sitting back and laughing at the absurdity of it all..It's about fighting back. Or at least that's the feeling I get from it.
My childhood ended the moment I saw this clip for the first time back in '83. I didn`t understand the lyrics, but the clip itself and the song touched me deeply and opened new things in my life to enter.
TIMELESS CLASSIC FROM THE ELECTRO/FUTURIST ERA OF EARLY 80S , . SUPERB TRACK FROM GREAT BAND AT A TIME WHEN THE BOUNDARIES OF MUSIC WERE PUSHED TO NEW LIMITS. SO GLAD I WAS GROWING UP THEN , MUST HAVE EVERY ELCTRO TRACK RECORDED , TIMEMACHINE NEARLY READY FOR TAKEOFF BACK TO LATE 70S/EARLY80S
i so wanted curt's haircut in the 80s after seeing this video. when i saw them at the apollo in glasgow in 1984 a guy waiting out side had the same haircut and looked really like curt, always stuck in my mind.
Gary Jules is BORING. Tears For Fears is FUN. I don't know how anybody can say Jules version can ever be compared to one of England's most beloved bands?
These are raw emotions, pure source of lyrics and meaning.Other version is great but it's whole different song. This one has chaos, despair and clumsy imperative to react. Gary Jules version observe world, with saddens, loneliness and without will to react.
In this two versions we see different state of mind in 80s vs. 90s and 2000s youngsters. New version reflect slowly dying inside and feel of powerless, transforming young rebels from 60s,70s & 80s into observers and conformist. Dead World.
The main plaudits always go to the songwriter, in my view. If people like the Gary Jules version (as I do), then it just confirms how good the song is.
Plus this version has the king of dancing... so it's clearly the best.
It's amazing how different the original is from the Gary Jules cover. The cover is a perfect example of how someone can cover a song but make it completely their own.
@Fray2221 phooar man, have you learnt nothing? firstly, in the world of youtube you do not comment on something with the COMPLETE opposite opinion to everyone else. its okay to disagree but do it somewhere you wont get hate. trying to start a fight makes you a twat. secondly, this is not a version. its the original.
@Fray2221 im not the hater, i think the other version is alright. personally i think this ones better, but im not gunna go comment on the other one being all bitchy and annoying. and the 80's is meant to be cheesy. thats why everyone loves it so much.
WICKED GROUP 3 THINGS STICK OUT ABOUT THIS GROUP THERE FROM DOWN THE ROAD FROM WHERE I USED TO LIVE 2 THEY MAKE BRILLIANT MUSIC AND 3RD THERE PARENTS WITH OR WITHOUT THEM KNOWING GAVE ME MY FIRST CB MAGNET ARIEL FOR MY CAR WHAT MORE ELSE CAN I SAY THANKS ....A GUY FROM SPAIN NOW....
music we grew up with.... spending some time on youtube brings back memories!!! A lot of good memories!! Remember we all tried to dance this way...... finally succeeded after a few pints... but i wasnt even trying to dance!!!!!
The only reason why I watch this video is for Roland's dancing. OH MY GOD. It kills me every time. I KNOW he was dying with laughter while trying to do that. Wonder whose idea that was...?
Brilliant song. I bloody wish I was around when this was released, the 80s rocked! I was born in 84 so I couldn't experience any of this music first time round. It's a bloody shame music isn't like this anymore. 80s music pisses on most of the stuff out there these days. There's an 80s nightclub a couple of miles from me & this song is played loads!
@Keith10284 Believe me mate the 80s were a pile of horrible steaming shit. Everything looks better in retrospect. In the 80s everyone thought the 60s were better (they weren't either) Every generation thinks the one before theirs was better
The original Mad World music video always captivate me since the first time I've watched this on TV back in the 80s. Nowadays you cannot see this on TV anymore, but the music became an classic today covered by many bands and even used in a cult movie Donnie Darko.
I find it kind of funny I find it kind of sad The dreams in which I'm dying are the best I've ever had I find it hard to tell you cause I find hard to take when people run in circles it's a very very Mad world mad world mad world mad world Thank you for uploading this. :)
This version delivers a dance-y type feel to it.

@clarepies Ohhh, sorry for stepping out of line with majority opinion.
I know this was the original, that's why I was so surprised that the Gary Jules cover was so much better.
And I know everyone these days has this great nostalgia for all this retro 80s crap, but the 80s sucked, it was all lame and cheesy as hell.
I don't care about you fucking haters, it's the fucking internet, your hate is impotent and futile.

Director: "Alright, now dance."
Roland: "Wot?"
Director: "Make something up."
"Roland: "Well alright."
And thus history is made.
