The only way the max would have won is if the srt4 was NOT an srt4 or if the maxima was boosted... (s/c or turbo) - i've raced srt4s both stock and modded with my 96 maxima and i've been able to hang through 2nd gear with them but then they just walk away quickly once that turbo spools and they regain traction
