@SopranoKayla1992 If you are looking for Renfaires I can't help but if you want SCA, go to sca.org You are in the Midrealm in Ohio and there are scads of groups around you, and wonderful people to help you get started. Piece of advice from someone who started long ago? Take a friend so you have someone with you just as lost as you are when you start, find one person to be friends with for a contact (don't panic, someone sooner or later will take you under their wing) and don't be intimidated.
Ack! It's just not right. Fyrdmen, Huscarl should be yelled by the members of the order that are present. And this should be sung either when drunk or preparing to fight.
Efestath O Sund-Hengeste ofer thaem swan-rada, famig-heals scipu ofer thaere gist thaere sunde. A Hengist has clipode us from Gotland und Friesland bi Vortigernes suththed his feth to beonne. We willan fon ure fost-rath in farscra thonne sylfor. We willan fon ure gestrod in gigumfra thonne golde. A Hengist has beotode us land for the campunge, agenland for thaem Seaxan-sans to habban.
This is a great performance, but yeah...being a Calontir girl myself, I gotta say this song in particular isn't truly right until you hear it sung by nasty, sweaty, half-drunk fyrdmen and huscarls around a bonfire...the tones may not be right, and there may not be any harmony...but the grit in the voice and the feeling behind the words really bring out the essence of the story. Also...yeah, this is too fast...it shouldn't be exactly a dirge, but it should be more solemn.
It's a lovely try, but it just isn't the same. You have to hear it sung in Calontir to really get it. It's the song of the Shieldwall - you need to be in the home of the shieldwall. Preferably with lots of drunk Huscarls shouting. This lacks the proper amount of emotion. At home people love this song and you can tell when they sing it.
The original music is as credited. The music in the video *is* the way it is sung in the SCA's Kingdom of Calontir. Apparently, the way Calontir sings it is actually credited to Sir Eric Hlodewechsun Von Hoch Hel Halloo (spelling may be a bit off). Most other places, it is sung more like a dirge. I don't know if the actual *music* is much different or not; it may be just a variation on the theme, tempo, etc.
Thanks for posting this have not heard this in years, but it will always will have a place in my heart, this is the song that always make me think of the SCA.
This is one of the greatest songs I've ever heard, thank you very much.

Love the song, just doesn't sound right when not sung by the Calon Army, or the Bards marching with them. Nice job though

I live in OH. Am I part of Calontir too? Where are these festivals? I need maps.

I liked it. What land is this band from?
NorceCodine 3 years ago
This group is in Maine. (If you are in the SCA, it's the Shire of Endewearde, East Kingdom.)

Either drunk huscarls at a post-revel, or the entire army of Calontir marching onto the field at Pennsic; Huzzah!!!!

I'd rather the song sung in a direct translation of Anglo-Saxon, the rightful language for such a song.

I agree, I think it would be more powerful for sure.

Is the sheild wall song of Calontir the same as this one or is it purely SCA invented?

I am a new SCAdian. What is this legendary shield wall I keep hearing about? Anyone got some pics/vids? references. I am highly interested.
Oh and this shire is incredible at singing. I am listening to them all.

You haven't heard this song until you've heard them sing it in Calontir around a bonfire. It'll give you chills...

Aye the way the fierdmen and huscarls (yes i cant spell) shout when their titles come up in the song...this group sings quite well, though

I don't need to be around a fire. It gives me chills imagining the thousands of troops marching to battle singing this. With the Captians leading.
