  • AOS Steam for me... I like to "think" when I play... LOL

  • I love Railways of the World! Choo! Choo!

  • thanks for this!

  • I just played "Age of Steam' for the 3rd time and just a few days ago. To me it does not seem that hard to play or learn. I think everything is hard to play when you first learn it. I played a 4 player game and it was fun. Even if we had a few Sharks playing the game kept it fun for me.

  • You also need to remember the prices.

Age of steam is the cheapest. (35$-45$)

Railways of the World and Steam have close to the same price. (45$-60$)

Steam's train figure pack is over 20$!! That is how much it is to buy an expansion for Age of Steam.

And what every happened to Railroad Tycoon the Board Game??

  • I believe their licence to use the name ran out. Railways of the World is basically the same game and the expansions for Railways of the World work with Railroad Tycoon.

Railways of the world comes with an extra Mexico map which was not included in Railroad Tycoon and as far as I am aware this is not available seperately.

  • Because Age of steam is the oldest game, I became an addict of that "unforgiving" game. Steam was a kind of disapointment for me, because of the years of playing AoS. It was something like " yeah but in age of steam...". Railways of the World is in my opinion somewhat different, and plays much easier. And playing with non-die hards this game is the best compromise.

  • You're dead on, Tom! AoS is my favorite of the three and I am no fun to play with!

  • McNoat,

It's not octions, it's auctions. In Railways of the World, players need to bid for turn order. In Steam, players choose tiles that give them bonus powers and also determine the turn order for the next turn (choosing a weaker bonus allows you to go earlier in the next round).

  • @ agenteasy:

    Thank you =D =D =D

  • To those reading these comments and trying to figure out what is right for you... well if you're reading these comments Age of Steam is NOT for you. It is fairly brutal compared to the others and unless your group is full of perfectionists that analyize each move to the nth degree I'd go for Steam or Railways. As for what is better between those? I'd say Steam plays better with 3 or 4 and Railways better with 5 or 6... so it depends on how many players you typically have.

  • Fantastic review Tom! We really got an insight into what you think makes a game fun and what doesn't.

  • Age of Steam seems to be something for chess players...

Chess is the most unforgiving game I know (except if you play against a dummkopf). But I don't know Age of Steam, so maybe I will change my mind in future...

However, could anyone please explain me what Tom means with "options" in a game? How can a game has no options?

  • Did you mean "actions"?

  • @ Templarkun:

    No, I mean options.

    Listen from 7:49 on...

  • EDIT:

    Ok, it sounds like "octions".

So he means "actions"? I didn't no that you can also pronounce it this way...

However, I'm still wondering what he means with that...

  • Ups, I spelled the word wrong, my mistake. What I meant was - "auctions".

  • I really liked this, because of the comparative nature. Would love to see more videos like this! I would really like to recommend that that whistling/radar sound at the beginning of the review videos be removed--it's so annoying!!

  • Probably the only game theme more Aspergers than high fantasy or steam punk is trains.

  • No, i'm still lost. I think i'll by Ticket to Ride instead :))) It still has trains in it :)))

  • love your review,

  • I've only played Steam. I found it to be heavy and cut throat (not in a bad way). AoS must be really heavy.

  • Imagine Steam but where you can only take stock out at the start of the turn, so you have to plan farther ahead and can be blocked. Since you have to pay for your stocks and train level every turn you can get burned hard if your plan falls flat and you are left holding money. Breaking even is a good goal early, and harder than you think.

Now add a smaller board with less room to maneuver and an extra fee for building over another track.

Now add a dice table to restock cities.

    That's the basics

  • Love your reviews Tom, but these train reviews own because of the wraywlwayws of the wrowrlwd

  • Thanks, I was looking for a comparison of these games, the only train game i have is iron dragon and its fantasy based, which some people dont care for. so thanks!
