I'm blessed to have worked with T.Steward a cardinal singer herself as my high school choir teacher. Than even more blessed to have Dr.Hatteberg to work with us from time to time :) good job
The sound is amazing no one can deny that but in my opinion it's just too white. By that i mean i would like a more rich darker sound. Treat as it is a Negro Spiritual. Oh and i love the malismas that you added.
Two things seem pretty obvious to me here: 1-This choir is extraordinary (for lack of a better word) and 2-The soprano solist that hits the high note at the end cracked. With that said, this is a video of only one performance.
@memocrc There's another video on YouTube of them singing this. :) But this is from way back in 2005! They returned to Marktoberdorf again for the 2011 competition.
I do know what I'm talking about the term Marcato is similar to staccato, with each note played in a disconnected fashion, but is different because each note is played for its entire duration. The Italian word staccato (literally detached, plural staccatos or staccati) indicates that notes are separated in a detached and distinctly separate manner. I so know what I'm talking about like I said we should be able to feel and hear the contrasting rhythm in this peice and its not happening!!
This song is not Legato but Staccato we should hear the rhythm in the vocals and the sopranos are a mess! They would be great singing a baroque peice.
The choir director at UofL is all about the "core of the sound", so he forces them to sing without vibrato which, 1. strains vocal cords if done incorrectly and 2. creates the most boring interpretation of this amazing Moses Hogan song I've ever heard. Great blend, but overall a lackluster effect was achieved *sigh*
Usually, they sound wonderful, but this piece doesn't work when performed this way. They are one of the most amazing choirs in the nation, but I dislike this performance. Just an opinion.
@swthemer I've been studying at UofL for two years and Dr. Hatteberg has never once told us to sing without vibrato--we simply do all we can to blend and most of us therefore sing without vibrato. There is no "forcing" whatsoever. Please be more informed about your criticism.

And I don't think the soprano at the end cracked. I think she did a melisma.

everything was perfect
until......
the end where the sapranoes are supposed to hold that high note in the end
she cracked....2:59
but other than that it was amazing
blend and balance was perfection
i saw in everyones face that they loved to sing
tenor solo should use better vowels-it is a choral solo not a country song solo
make sure to know the different-didnt need the extra runs and such that part was too country and it shouldnt have been

You might want to look at auditioning some younger sopranos, or ones that don't nodes. That was painful. GREAT Blend, but they've got to go.

HUBassProdigy, I love your comments. You always bring comedy to my life. But what else would you expect from them?
HUComposer 4 years ago
Those sopranos are hideous! The str8 tones... why are there str8 tones in a spiritual??? And sharp ass str8 tones at that!

Lackluster. Right. That's why they placed second in arguably the most prestigious choral competition in the world.
