when I watch Stern play, I think, "This doesn't even look tough. Even I could do that." But then when I go try, I think, "Damn... Stern, you're too amazing." The way he plays so effortlessly but so emotionally is something you don't see in too many violinists.
excellent bowing technique (bow allways close to bridge!) and amazing left fingers (4th finger looks like naturally bent in)...what else can you ask...i listened to it allready 200 times at least and can't be bored (i do get bored when i try to play it myself the same way as him...)
somebody knows what violin he is playing on?ysaye guarneri?guadagnini?
@Elisheval lol it just means that he can play really, really fast. Shredding is a slang word used for rock guitarists (at least the guitarist friends I have use it).
I performed this piece for my HS commencement concert back in '80 and It was NOT an easy feat, but none the less I did and got an 18 min standing ovation, not bad for a 17 year old from Brooklyn !
but I have never played it again ! ! ! tooo stressfull ;)
Quality isn't good enough to see on this, but if you have the actual DVD you can see he played with so much passion, power and intensity that there was sweat dripping all over his violin after.

Heard this piece hundreds of times, but this interpretation gives me goose bumps. It is the sound, and good taste - no excessive gooey emotions and cabaret-like exaggerations.
The SOUND, its depth is incredible. It is simply breathtaking! My favorite.
We are as enamored of the person of a great violinist as we are of their music. Great musicians exude a confidence and comfort level that mere mortals can only dream about employing. Stern is beautiful to watch.
Can someone explain meaning of the title? Introduction? What is Cappriccioso? I love this song, and listened to my DVD more than hundred times, but I'd like to understand the song a bit better than just listen.
Capriccioso- lively and free. An instrumental work with an improvisatory style and a free form. Excellent commentary at Wikipedia.
Camille Saint-Saëns (9 October 1835 16 December 1921) like many other French Romantic composers such as Edouard Lalo and George Bizet, held a deep interest in the style of Spanish dance music. This style permeates his solo violin works, particularly the Havanaise Op. 83 and the Introduction et Rondo Capriccioso. Written for Spanish violinist Pablo de Sarasate
@himalayado Introduction is self explanatory with the slow beginning. Capriccioso = Capricious, which means "fanciful or witty" and if you take a look at Paganini's Caprices, it generally means difficult.
i think that heifetz played this better technically but personally i like this interpretation better. I just don't like heifetzs non use of rubato. i dont know which one i prefer
I love the piece!!!!!!!! Isac Stern is such an amazing violinist, so is Heifetz. But I do not think Stern is better than Heifetz, or vise versa. There both fine violinist.
I have been listening th Stern's interpretation since I was a child. I don't know that I could seperate the music from the musician at this point. Even if I heard a "better" interpretation of it, I would probably not like it as well. To me, this is 'Stern.'
This is my absolute favorite piece ever written for violin. I've been playing violin for 3 years and I'll be performing this in... roughly 4 years. :)
Issac Stern learned to play the violin from Naoum Blinder. My teacher also learned to play the violin from Naoum Blinder. That doesn't mean more than just amusement. In fact, I still can't play this piece in front of people. Long way to go, but having immense pleasure playing every day. I'll be 74 next month.
@wingklow I just read your review about this piece and I just want to say that it is just great listening to it. Did you ever hear David Oistrach playing it or any other piece for that matter. I think Oistrach was one of the best . Anyway at 74 you are still doing very well , so keep it up God bless you.
@pascal1530 Yes, I've heard David Oistrach play this piece. He and Issac Stern both have the intensity and technical skill to bring out its best. I attended their concerts when I was young. They, as well as many other violinists, give me inspiration to keep practicing. I leave on my music stand Paganini's 24 Caprices permanently. Thank you for your encouragement.
@outoftunefiddler Thanks. You were very lucky to have studied with Boris Schwarz, the famous author. I couldn't find any video of him playing the violin on YouTube, probably because great teachers usually don't make great performers, and vice versa.
The enjoyment of music grows, not diminishes, with age. Don't you agree? I just finished playing "old man" Haydn's Divertimenti 1 thru 9 and came to realize I appreciate them much, much more than I did when I was young.
@wingklow I can sympathize with your hesitation to perform in public.
I performed Schubert last week, and I think it was pretty terrible. But I was met with quite a bit of applause and many kind words post-performance. It was quite a frightening experience for me, but I'm glad I did it.
Sometimes it's best to perform badly in public than to never perform at all.
Janine Jansen's grossly excessive body movements distract the audience from the beauty of any piece of music. She's good, but in my opinion, just not in the same league as the great Stern.
Isaac Stern performing with Eugene Ormandy and the Philadelphia Philharmonic in this rendition of the Intro and Rondo. This excellent recording is available at Amazon. Only Heifitz and Perhlman could do it as much justice. I prefer the Stern version.
As for the message you're trying to get across, great job. As for the words you used to express it...I mean really, re-think your own life! No need to lower your class to get the point over. But on the same note, you're right, Jason101 needs to rethink his life.
This is a very good rendition. If anyone tells you it was not written for Sarasate their crazy. This piece, VC2, VC3, & Havanaise, Saint-Saens wrote for Pablo; and lets face it, the Spanish Flag is all over it. Sarasate's contrasting style of high and low violin registers along with a dance melody make this piece great.
I absolutley love stern. I saw Heifetz video, he is one of my idles, but it sounded like he made 2 or 3 mistakes. My teacher, Mr.Vitenson, played this at FIU in Florida and it was AWSOME! Of course very close to this, though.
Perlman was Sterns student. Yes Perlman is good (this is m opinion, you dont have to agree) but i prefer sterns interpretations. He has just the right mix of expression and technique, doesnt overdo 1 or the other
yeah but... Heifetz and Stern... a whole new league, Perlman and Bell are good, very good but personally i prefer heifetz and stern, then again thats just an opinion
I don't know, I think that they are all tied for me but if I choose to listen to one of these guys it's usually Perlman. Stern, Bell, and Heifetz are still my favorites as well. I just... idk. I prefer to listen to Perlman.
does anyone know where i can find a recording of stern playing the prokofiev concerto? im learning it now and i am trying to find a recording and stern is awesome (im 14 and thus too cheap to buy it :D)
I recently played this song for a judge, i'm 16 and i had 6ish months to prepare it. obiviously it wasn't going to be perfect but it sounded close to this with slower tempo's.. i went to the judging and the judge told me i shouldn't be playing this song and thats its way out of my league. ive performed this song infront of many people who have heard this song and had the music and many who were music majors they all said it was great. Should i be limited to only play stuff thats at my age level?
i absolutely agree with you whats the point of playing violin if you are forced to play pieces OTHER PEOPLE think you should play? If you love a piece, truly love it then it will show in your playing, don't play notes, play music!
What is with everyone giving thumbs down for OPINIONS we are allowed to have opinions, i have learnt this piece and heard both stern and heifetz, they are both good, very good.
I dont know a thing about violins... butthis is reallly really good! quality and technique...

Age does not denote skill, i know a 12 year old with her Fmus, brilliant violinist, age has nothing to do with how well you can play

That's silly. Who has a right to decide what "your league" should be? Play what you want.

i absolutely agree with you whats the point of playing violin if you are forced to play pieces OTHER PEOPLE think you should play? If you love a piece, truly love it then it will show in your playing, don't play notes, play music!

What is with everyone giving thumbs down for OPINIONS we are allowed to have opinions, i have learnt this piece and heard both stern and heifetz, they are both good, very good.
