El instrumento meramente fue adoptado por los mapuches; además de bastantes otras culturas sudamericanas prehispánicas; pero su origen no es de allí.

Es bastante incierto, pero se cree que una posible raíz haya sido la región del extremo oriente en Asia; y desde allí haya llegado a Europa a través de los comerciantes de la ruta de la Seda, finalmente llegando a América durante la colonización. Aunque una existencia preterita en América es posible, sigue siendo incierto.
