  • VIVE MARY THE BEST SONG!!!

  • Comment removed

  • Yeah ! cette interprétation me file la chair de poule de la tête aux pieds !

Et ne parlons pas des images de la vidéo qui est vraiment réussie et devrait être au programme des Collèges histoire de donner un peu de conscience politique aux ados ! Vraiment incontournable. Merci.

  • Fuck!! This is serious groove!!

  • AMAZING! Thankful for her spirit!! So beautiful!!

  • soul and groove in abundance. the horns are fantantic. what a song!

  • @Joecockerisarocker Besides Merry's fantastic vocals and groove, the horns and that funk sound added to this, make this the best cover of "Gimme Shelter" out of all them, imo. The arrangement is perfect, the background vocals...it's a power-packed song. Mick must have thought this was *great* when he first heard it.

  • The Rolling Stones sent me

  • Much to be PROUD and ashamed of in your montage!!!

The spirit in this song really does take control...!!!!

    Needed this kind of injection...thank-you!!!

  • Another hidden Youtube great gem! This should be on prime time every night.

  • Who are the losers who "dislike" this song??? Thank God they don't chose music for the rest of us!!

  • always loved her version anybody know who worked on the sessions with her, alot of the guitar work sounds very familiar

  • Merry was amazing singing with Mick, in "Gimme Shelter" Mick told her to go all out, she got so into it, and sang so hard her voice cracked more than normal, and Mick yelled out "Yeah" (which you can still hear in the original) none of which was planed. If not for Merry, I do not believe "Gimme Shelter" would have been near the hit it was. What an amazing voice, God bless you Ms. Clayton.

  • Ricky Gervais DIDN'T send me.

  • HD the best merry clayton , logical song rock soul magique reprise des stones !!

  • Great music. Fine slide show.

  • BEST SONG EVER BY A GREAT VOICE ! ! !

  • Does anybody know anything about the image at 2:38? A title or photographer?

  • Al Green brought me here

  • Merry Clayton brought me here.

  • In my humble opinion, the three greatest anti-war songs are, in order:

    1. "Where Have All the Flowers Gone" (various artists)

    2. "Gimme Shelter" (Merry Clayton)

    3. "Universal Soldier" (Donovan)

  • Great, I love it :-) Tedin (Chris)

  • What is clear that a lot of people read Ricky Gervais' blog.

  • Amazing song, amazing voice!

  • what a voice on merry clayton god bless her!

  • love her!

  • Thanks for sending me here Ricky!

  • Brill!

  • Thanks, Ricky G, this is a great song and vocal performance!

  • Ricky sent me/ Stayed for the epic tunes.

  • A nice thank you to Ricky Gervais, a comedian I enjoy, for recommending this video to all his fans. Thanks!

  • Ricky Gervais sent me

  • Cool, Gervais.

  • Ricky Gervais sent me here via his blog!

  • MAGIQUE MERRY , logical song ,just perfect HD , beautiful reprise ,excellente et sublime chanteuse !! thanks'

  • This is the first time I've heard this version. I was very worried on the intro. In fact, I almost left in disgust. And then she started singing. Ahhhhh... now I get it. Boy, do I get it! What a vocal. And that's some great fuzzed up wah lead guitar too. Thanks for posting this!

  • cool! i always liked her on give me shelter but never heard her do it. cool vid too! thumbs up!

  • america was once about freedom

now a land based on lies

  • I DO NOT UNDERSTAND!!

The Internet is supposed to be inmensely huge, an so is The Story of Black Music, right? The last 4 times (from 2009 up till now) that I have been SOCKED by a song I hadn´t heard of, it ended up being an upload of yours!! Ok then, HOW the hell is that possible!!??

And, by the way, I´m not easily impressed, I must say, since I own & spin 5.000 LP´s!!

MR Funkroll, you certainly are a BLOODY MONSTER!!!! A MILLION THANKS!! Love, Peace & a lot of Soul!!

  • Were to even start after watching that probably the first video on here to make me think , unbelievable voice , we always believ were the ones going threw it and those were the tough times what do we know about shit were watching an rating a video on our I-phone this is what the kids in school should be watching so we don't fuck our future up and always remember were we came from! On a lighter note Nixon shaking hands and looking at his watch classic!

  • Great song, great video... thanks for this!

  • Hidden songs like this is why we have youtube. beautiful stuff.

  • On the original, she sounded like she screaming to save her life on the day of Armageddon. It was beautiful.

This one is good. Recommended, and liked. Thanks.

  • 0:48 Gordon Freeman

  • Such a powerful, emotional era with the music AND the world issues...

  • @ptitejp

No more power or emotion...it all died with the hope of the 60's. It's awsome to be alive now...I have American Idol and Twitter. All we have today is the notion that the golden age is coming, other than that...not really much worth caring about.

  • good remix but lacking the rawness and intensity Clayton gave in the original as back up vocals to Mick.

  • Children hiding under their desks.. people will NEVER learn to be peaceful. Now that's a fact for ya

  • Thank you for your presentation. It's a beautiful and haunting piece of work. The soulful of Merry Clayton bring the immediacy of the trouble times. The visuals drive the point home with brutal honesty. Thank you.

  • Yeah, she sang with Mick on the original and mopped the floor with him on that one, I just heard the original track. Wow, intense!!

  • had it for years aparantly now getting spinns at nighters , always thought it would do well on the rarer soul scene

  • It's Gold!!!

  • This just took me to Church. Smooth and bit Mellower than when she did it on the Stones Album. But still NICE!

    PEACE

  • Just as good as the Rolling Stones.

  • Indeed this track is getting a few spins on the northern soul circuit up north...some diehard soul fans are scratching their heads but others are loving it (me included)

  • 13 people don't know what good music is.

  • tres bonne video en effet !! mais regardez celle de ruth coppeland et vous comprendrez

  • I heard this for the 1st time a few months ago at a Northern Soul event in England. Never thought I say it but I prefir this version to the awesome Stones original.

Thanks for posting; very well thought out video.

  • wow, this woman is a voice!

  • she took it to another level.

  • I never know this one ...

  • BON TOUT CA KOKO !!

  • Rule #1...don't mess with the greatest rock and roll song ever made

Rule #2...if you decide to mess with the greatest rock and roll song ever made then do it in this fashion...this is STUNNING! AMAZING.

  • my space link is dead

  • What happend to that realy high note she would hit after the guitar solo where her voice cracks that was my favorite part

  • @andymanportillo yeah man that's the same thing came in to my mind when i listened to this...her vocals in the rolling stones version of this song is rocking.... ... and the cracking of the voice.. that was my favorite part too

  • Some of the photos on here actually makes me sick. KKK, war, children dieing, turmoil, torment...ect..Why do we have to live this way...we only live once and it makes me sad to think of the people in this world who don't love anything or anyone...I just want to cry..

  • @valerysgirl why don't you just die instead....

  • @Blkpryde ...maybe you should be a little more nicer...it's good for the mind...if you don't have anything good to say then don't post.

  • @valerysgirl you're a slick-devil aren't you...two-faced on all aspects of life.You people always say,"you should be nicer"...and when you get together at a tea party rally,it's.."KILL THE NIGGERS!!"...

  • @Blkpryde ....You need to stop putting words in peoples mouths..you gotta problem slamming that down my throat..don't assume jerk..

  • That ugly face at 0:40 is hate on a level ive never witnessed personally

  • Well all we can do is hope not. Keep the faith.

  • Her vocal on the original studio track on Let It Bleed is legendary.Makes the hairs on your neck stand up.She,along with Clydie King and Veneta Fields brought gospel and soul to that record and Exile On Main Street, the best records the Stones ever made.

  • sorry but her performance on the original is spine tingling every single time i listen to it. This version just sounds weak in comparision.

  • I love that picture of Nixon shaking hands at 2.24......He looks like he was an arrogant arsehole to me.

  • @guitarbutt It did the goose bumps thing for me. Whoooooeeee! WOW! :-O

  • seems like the song was written FOR her; maybe not, but anyway she sure makes it her own.

  • This is the REAL deal...such HEART and SOUL! Thank You Merry!

  • I'am sixty - five years old and i managed to live through this horror !!! Alli can say if we don't wake up it will be the fire next. Here's wishing for the best i know we can do it.

  • @hapzap13 This song is more relevant than ever, isn't it? :-(

  • ....this is the 'independent woman' version of the song! m ( . .)m

it's good she made her version different, but when she sang with the Stones on back-up she was cooler. cheers for video !

  • I dig it.

  • I like this a lot more than the Stones version.

  • amazing voice

  • OMG where has this been my whole life??

  • Merry can sure sing but without the power of the Rolling Stones electric guitars she is left to carry an amazing song by herself. Still, if we didn't have her original high octane outburst with them this would have been quite a powerful song.

  • That's magnificent!

  • So true, still today.... the "Stone's finest message song, then & Now... Merry Clayton-

does it proud with her fab and strong soulful voice, love her... one of our very best

Message songs..... wonderful Post!!! Thanks, I have this one on both of my channels

as a very favorite of mine.. PEACE* - Marcie B. *********** xxx

  • wow!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

what a rockin video! great images. and amazing version. she really made that song. one of the stones' best, and this version is as good as any ive heard from them

  • Brilliant version!

  • For years I believed it was Madeline Bell that sang - oh well if I am still learning things I am still alive !!!!!

  • I think the picture at 2:03 was cute.

  • good cover buit orginal version has more flair und groove

  • Fantastic cover version.

  • Whoa, I didn't know this recording existed. She was the woman that sang her ass off on the Stone's recording. Cool!

  • My favorite version...Thx for posting!!! Isn't she the coolest!!

  • Terrific Post. The images stir up a lot of very raw emotions. In those days a pertinent question was how are we going to make it? How are we going to survive?

    Did we make it?

    Did we survive?

  • wonderful!

    thanks to have posted this!!

  • This video is so powerful. It is amazing that the younger generation today, don't even know about music like this or how war and racism existed so strongly back then and still is a problem today. The kids today have their heads are so far up their a**es these days. It is all about the mememe complex, what can you do for me and not what I can do for you.

  • It is because they were given "Too Much Shelter" no pun intended. I totally agree, and at least with the 20 something political posters, on utube, I cant believe how naieve and ignorant, and sure of themselves they are, all with the vast experience that involves video games and living at home.

  • She is awesome. If you all like Merry, listen to Minnie Riperton and Anita Baker. Minnie can hit some of the highest notes...I think that these divas are the last of their kind. The younger women singers cannot sing with soul like this. Deep down powerful singers like these divas from the 60's, 70's and early 80's is gone...I hate to say that. You won't see the younger singers tearing their hearts out like these divas.

  • This woman totally made 'Gimme Shelter'. She deserves a spot on the rock hall of fame.

  • Who is she?

    Eric

  • Yeah, fantastic isn't she. Did the Stones proud

  • i JUST found out who this woman is. wondered all my f'ing LIFE. it's like a piece falling into place...knowing who it was who sang so scary on that song.....made it.....

  • Im afraid for all of us. This is a powerfull collection of pictures, it turn's my stomach to see what man, can do to man...

  • @KIDRED56 wrong..what the WHITE man can do to a BLACK man/woman...don't pull that totalitarian-white inbred bullshit here pal! WE ARE THE OPPRESSED..no one else can claim that....unfortunate for us though.

  • @Blkpryde You have got to be kidding. That's the banner loosers wave. Thank God our president doesn't share your woe is the black man mentality. I will admit it is easier to blame a whole race for your issues but you are responsible for you and you can not rewrite history. Your attitude is oppressive and it appears that you perpetuate the "great divide". If anything the union of the Stones and Merry should liberate .

  • @Blkpryde Stop feeling sorry for yourself. Chance's are you have not been opressed any more than anyone else today. How do you expect ANYONE to get past being raceist when Its YOU who won't let go of it.

  • Funknroll...I wanna say a BIG thank you for posting this. I came across this terrific version looking for something else, and I'm SOOO glad I did. GREAT talent, and the video's super too. I'm gonna post it on my web page. Cheers, K.

  • Pipes, Baby. Solid gold pipes.

  • Terrific and beautiful.

  • african american ladies voices pierce my spine everytime they hit the high notes damn gotta love it

  • she sings from hearth! those emotions, what a performance!

  • AdamusMinimus, pls, thats not just a cover,U wouldn't her movement was,it's about Viet war my dear, her title "street fighter" post ..no war !!!

  • She not only strained her voice theres spec that her screaming towards the end was the reason for her miscarrage shortly after.perssonally i think on the stones version its the most powerful singing voice ive heard

  • She strained her voice on the original, and it sounded alot better. She gave me goosebumps the first time I heard the song. And this just doesn't do the same for me.

  • She was doing back-up on the original, that's a whole different process.

    This is all her.

  • @Behemoth12391 Agree, this version is way too clean. Original gave me goosebumps big time

  • @Behemoth12391

Merry on the Stones track may ave been better than Merry on this one, but Merry lip syncing nsync songs is still better than Mick on his best day.

  • Powerful images

  • This is just not better than the Stones version it blows the fucking clean out of the water

    funknroll perfect 100%

  • I just wet my pants...

  • Amazing cover!!!

  • It's hardly a cover, since her singing constitutes most of the original song.

  • Well it is a cover...... as its not the original song..... (Pointless comment from you)

  • I didn´t think it was possible, but this actually manages to beat the original Stones version. Electrifying stuff.

  • Could be that she was the female voice on the Stones original, which might not have been as huge a tune without her voice complimenting Micks...

BTW, this came off of a killer album, wish I still had it, but it was stolen 30 years ago!

  • It says in the description of the fucking video that she was the female voice on the original.

  • check her out on carole king's tapestry too. stunning. also on "music" album.

  • hell yeh

  • so good.

  • She owned the song.

    x

  • great video, best version of this song

  • I first heard this version of the song backstage at a Paul Weller concert in 2008...blew me away!

  • we must kill , extermanate, and insinirate, all who do not want to shout away

  • awesome video mate well done!

  • I know Merry personally. There is a pic of her at 22 seconds.

  • She's not white valerysgirl

  • I know Merry personally. There are pics of her at 22 secs and 1:01.

  • amazing...this voice....such power.

  • Some kinda powerpack funk.

  • 2min 51 2min52 oh yeahhhhhhh !!!!!!!

  • Stunning...

  • love it

  • We used to listen to the Stones sing Gimme Shelter on AM radio and we loved the backup singer more than Mick, etc. Then, once in a while, if we got really lucky, they played the Merry Clayton version and then we were really rocking. Good old AM radio.

Merry's the bomb! I'd buy a CD of her songs in a heart beat.

  • OMG!! Mary Clayton is up there with Aretha, she should be praised to heaven!

  • She's a very well known back up singer

  • You are beautiful

  • The group Maxayne covered this song on their 1972 self titled lp. There's a video posted on Youtube for it. Type in A Jam For Jack. The two songs are segued together.

  • Why is this lady not better known? Her voice is truly amazing at both high and low notes. Pity she did not do the high note bit here. It made my hair stand on end.

  • Well said!!!!

  • Great post, work of art the video.....good version of Gimme Shelter. First time I heard the Stones play Gimme Shelter I couldn't move it is just the most powerful song. Keef wrote it to express the conflict he felt because Mick was banging his girlfriend on the film set of Performance......powerful emotions that seem to engulf the whole world for Keef ...

  • lol, that is not why he wrote this song. It was written about war and racial tension at the time. just listen to the lyrics

  • Maybe, but that is what Keith said when interviewed and this was a song he wrote both music and lyrics. Generally Keith's work isn't political he writes about personal emotions.

  • This is a personal song, it's not about politics. GS is about heroin being the only cure when your woman cheats on you with Mick Jagger.

  • I don't get why people think that about this song. I mean, it's known for being about Vietnam. When he says just a shot away, he is referring to guns, not shooting up. It doesn't make sense to say that shooting up is a cure when he's saying that war is just a shot away. Even if he was talking about heroin he would be saying that is causes war, rape and murder, and not a cure.

  • Well he wrote it during Anita's affiar with Mick and he was getting seriously hooked on smack. Being a warchild himself, something he often brings up, the refrain describes his emotions at the time. He probably saw a fitting reference in the antiwar demonstrations but more likely felt an actual comforting identification with the soldiers. He was really hurt by Anita's betrayal and probably felt like one of those soldiers, out in the cold, alone, seeking shelter and found it just a shot away.

  • Thanks TONS for posting this! This kicks butt!

  • very nice version :)

  • Wow

  • Awesome!!!

  • Wow, she is awesome! In the original she is bad ass on those BV's as well!

  • holy fuck!!! i dont kno how i came over this track, and the intro was alittle weak but once it kicked in its absolutely amazing!!!

  • wow. I never thought I'd find a gem like this. this is great stuff

  • Beautiful montage! Thanks for posting.

  • This video is a great collage. And this version of Gimme Shelter is excellent.

  • DEFINITIVE......

  • C'est genial!

  • anyone know where I can get hold of this track?

  • Why the hell doesn't somebody release her 1972 Ode Records' "Merry Clayton" LP as a CD?????????? It's fantastic.

  • still very meaningful!!! gives you chills!

  • このころ、後に黒人系大統領が出ようとは誰が思っていただろうか

  • I need more stars to rate this video. The best I found in 3 years inside youtube.

  • Absolutely spot on! Thats one of the most powerful vids I've seen on youtube. The combination of that amazing voice and the imagery in the video.... wow! Absolutely jaw-dropping.

  • Great music. Great video.

  • JUST AN EXQUISITE VOICE...PERFORMANCE....What an incredible collection of images...a treasure

  • FINALLY...the woman who "that voice" belongs to.

    SO COMPELLING, SO EXQUISITELY UNIQUE
