Wow... Like bradbavarde said, you are a great organist, and this piece is excellent! But your quickness to take offense at one comment here is sad, considering that as a church organist, you are supposed to bring people to give thanks to God, and as a Christian, you are supposed to turn the other cheek as Christ Himself did. Perhaps you should meditate upon some Psalms in addition to playing them.
I agree that anyone with the means to dress nicely should do so, but with the stipulation that the church has no right to bar someone from entering just because of the character of her dress.
I would agree that headphones, gum, and snacks are inappropriate. And cell phones should definitely be kept on silent. And a boob-tube is a TV, but do you mean tubetops? Because those erring a little on the skanky side. But I live in an area where not everyone can afford nice clothes, especially for kids who are still growing. Would you say they shouldn't come to church? And I still take issue with the word "trained". Animals are trained. Children are raised.
The other congregants dress the way they want to dress, too. Most of the older people wear dressy clothes, but the majority of the younger people are less formal. Again, I highly doubt that God cares what we wear and I know that the other congregants don't care, either. Also, I wasn't "trained" as a child. I was raised and I was raised quite well, thank you.
I wear blue jeans to church all the time. To be fair, I currently attend a youth ministry center, but even before then I would occasionally wear my jeans to church. I don't think God cares what we wear to worship. He cares about what's in our hearts, not what's on our backs.
I am sorry, I didn't mean to touch a nerve. I never dreamed that "Here I am Lord" is a Catholic hymn. Still, despite the Vaughn Williams arrangement with the 4th verse Dowland fauxbourdon, it still seems wierd in a Catholic mass - imagine the Southern Baptists using Panus Angelicus as their choral introit. It just doesn't fit. You are, however, a great organist!
Thanks for your compliment. The version of "Here I am, Lord" I was referring to is the arrangement by Shutte. When it is used at the cathedral, it is usually used as the communion procession hymn. We usually use "Yaweh, I know" as communion procession on Ash Wednesday.
I find it odd that a Roman church should be signing a psalm tune that is practically a Protestant Anthem. Moreover, this is posted by someone who waxes nostalgic for the pre-VII days.
Guess what pal? So what's your point? I have been a substitute organist for many protestant services and many were using contemporary pieces from RC ligurgies, eg. 'We are Called', 'Here I am, Lord', And 'Yaweh, i know'. We Catholics also sing "A Mighty Fortress" and "The God of Abraham Prais" - predominantly Lutheran Hymns. Have a problem with that? if not, then stop bitching!!!
While it may be odd, any occasion calling for solemnity in music, the Catholic Church in English speaking countries often turn to the C of E for such music. I have been an organist for the last 35 years, and we used this hymn for our 125th anniversary back in 1999. Yes, we as Catholics have our treasury of Latin based hymns, but there are hymns that are equal in beauty and proprietary as our own.
Please especially watch the video titled 'Papuri sa Diyos' (the Catholic mass' 'Gloria' in Tagalog) and notice the rich tradition of the Catholic Church in the Philippines. Notice the quality and vigor of the people singing and notice that as the camera pans throughout the cathedral that you will be hard pressed to find blue jeans.
I would like to clarify being 'kicked out'. What I mean is that I was kicked out of the staff and kicked out from the organ console. Don't worry, I can still attend mass their, however, I have no plans to ever visit that cathedral - ever. Not the way they treated me after I gave almost 20 years of my life volunteering organ services. I found some place else. Amazing this happens with a very honest yet humble B-16 in the Vat and his recent coming to grips with recent issues at Yankee stadium
That is just 'par for the course'! I have even seen basketball shorts, basketball jerseys, flip-flops, spaghetti straps and halter tops worn, too..... Before V-II, men wore white shirts with a tie and women were veiled and everybody GENUFLECTED whenever 'Christ' was uttered. You're right, whatever happened to good old fashioned reverence?
Does genuflecting and dressing a certain way evidence more piety of the heart? I am thankful I was brought up in the Reformed church. These comments do not seem healthy.
what's your problem? Somebody asked me a question and I gave a straight answer without any bullshit. I am straight and damn proud of it! My being straight did not 'fit the mold' of their staff. A few years ago a male staff member asked me where to get gay porno on the web and my refusal to answer his request in a manner to sate his appetite for such played an instrumental role in my departure.
I can't imagine why they would have asked you for such information. Obviously, something is not right somehwere with whatever staff you are talking about. If it is a priest, why does Rome insist on celibacy? They would do better to return to the orignal doctrine of allowing priests to marry.
Sorry, I couldn't reply right away, I was out at my Saturday evening bowling leagues. To answer your question, the staff member was not a priest/clergy, rather a lay staff. On a side note, I recently learned that the staff member who told me that I was being kicked out is no longer at the cathedral and has resigned due to health issues. The resignation was in the cathedral's bulletin. That particular staff member (who resigned) was NOT the staff member who asked me for porno website links.
How was my organ playing? Do you consider it 'sloppy'? I am Catholic, too, but the church (just that particular Cathedral only - not the church as a whole), the same 'gum chewers' kicked me out last year - I guess your notion of 'sloppiness' may have merit. What do you think?
The church is the Cathedral of Our Lady of Peace (Roman Catholic), the presiding bishop is Bishop Clarence Silva (ordained and installed Bishop of Honolulu Diocese in July, 2005). Peace out, - steelersfanhawaii
I don't mean to 'pat myself on the back' but that was done without use of the combination action (was non operational). Also, if you heard 32's, it was an Albhorn-Galanti (Romantic version) module I 'bootleg' installed in the chamber - I 'hitch-hiked' it off of the pedal 16' bourdon contacts and used an interface to produce midi signals.

What Church was this filmed at? Also, who is the Bishop? By his actions at the Altar, he appears to be Roman Catholic as am I. Pax!
