  • And I'm going to play this, this semester! And that makes me so HAPPY!

  • I'm just not big on anger and insults, that's all. My "cunt of a cunt" was a bit of irony. If some are fortunate to be more intelligent, knowledgeable, shouldn't they help those others that aren't so lucky? Don't you want to spread this good stuff? Then it's got to be love, not anger.

  • This is really frightfully beautiful... the ability to paint pictures and portray moods with notes in an unorthodox way is something special...

  • Oh, and not that saying ALL singers don't understand, just a majority of them prefer more relief in their music.

  • From what I know, this Rain Tree Sketch is far more difficult to play than the Rain Tree Sketch II.

Both are beautiful, evocative works that sound like wind chimes stirring in unstable weather.

  • I play this music not so slow. But it's played in a sooo good way that it really doesn't matter here... Takemitsu ♥

  • not to mention that all this music sounds very much the same. theres really no difference from listening from one song to the next. this music dont go anywhere from beginning to the end. if you say it does you're really just putting meaning into something that has none because you want it to. im not saying its bad because im not used to it for dont understand it, but because it doesn't go anywhere or have meaning other than "this music is creepy". not that that's terrible... it's only an effect.

  • @miniatureface I think getting involved in youtube comment debates about music is kind of pointless, it's just personal preference. But I want to weigh in saying that I genuinely enjoy this music. I have listened to tons of atonal music, and there really are huge differences from piece to piece and composer to composer, this music sounds COMPLETELY different from other atonal composers like xenakis, fernyhough, whatknot, there are very real differences in the sound.

  • @miniatureface Like any kind of music that at first seems unfamiliar (I had the same experience getting used to metal style vocals) It can seem abrasive and worthless at first, but you can totally get used to it. I don't think its creepy. To me this music is relaxing, I get the same feeling of tranquility that I get from debussy from this music. I'm not trying to sound sophisticated, I really like it. Also, all music is only "an effect" people always impose meaning on music they like.

  • @miniatureface "theres really no difference from listening from one song to the next. this music dont go anywhere from beginning to the end."

That's because you're not used to this kind of music, so it all blurs into one. Once you've get accustomed to it, your ears become more finely tuned.

And for example, there IS development in this piece. Just listen around 1:29. That's a significant point in the work.

  • seriously? why is everyone saying this mess of notes is a masterpiece. it's not, it's an effect. similar to abstract art as phillyt2020 put it. how could anyone consider this person a genious? all of his music has the same eerie, disgusting sounds of notes that go everywhere. i'm not saying it's terrible as an effect, but thats all it is, an effect. not a master piece. a masterpiece implies that everything about it is perfect and it could be done no other way. this is definately not the case

  • The picture looks like he lacks sleep and this couples with the music. Sorry if this sounds offensive to anyone. Just saying this for fun....>.<

  • I like this ... some of the most 'dream-like' musc I've ever heard . Intriguing

  • It does not matter that he used Messiaen's modes of limited transportation. Does that mean every single piece created in the past couple of hundred years that use modes or well-tempered tuning are repeticious garbage ?

  • Anybody who compares this to abstract art is a fucking moron. I love Takemitsu, he creates these pure textures with a hint of french impressionism. I don't like his music because it is "artsy". This is not the video to be posting your rants because you don't understand something.

As far as this being "something someone else has done"...no. It is not by any means. Takemitsu is his own beast, even Stravinsky knew that.

  • @Theuniverse053211 "Takemitsu is his own beast, even Stravinsky knew that." Game recognizes game.

  • PhillyT2020; the less a person understands something the more angry they become at those who do understand. There's no big secret here, you simply have to throw away any preconceptions or expectations and listen to the music on its own terms. If you are unable to do this, fine-go and listen to some country music or read a comic. But please don't put up posts suggesting that everyone who likes what you don't is fake or pompous because that is unfair. Cunt.

  • @swirls999 You're so deep.

  • @amorpaz1 Thankyou

  • @swirls999.... hahaha for your information swirls... I'm a classically trained singer... been a part of professional opera groups...performed in countless musicals and stage productions... and play the piano (albeit not amazingly)... I absolutely hate country music for different reasons that I won't get into here... saying that I do not understand this type of music is also wrong... i've taken multiple university level music theory classes as well as music appreciation courses.

  • @swirls999 I've studied and heard atonality musicians before... as well as any music style you can imagine for that matter including Gregorian monk style.... I DO understand this music and STILL it is terrible... I do not like music that in my mind any single person could recreate/produce something similar without having any musical background... my 5 yr old cousin could churn this crap out.... just like cut and paste hip hop music or rap can apparently be made by anyone 'Friday song'.no talent

  • @PhillyT2020 If you can't hear the difference between this and what your 5 year old cousin improvises, then you don't know what you're talking about, no matter how much you protest that you do.

  • @PhillyT2020 Atonality musicians? Atonal music is a part of the standard repertoire for all instruments in the symphony orchestra. Do you think all composers that worked with serialism managed to bluff past us all? Hiphop and Rap.. Breakbeat is the word youre looking for i think, look up some of the more experimental stuff for example DJ Shadow, J Dilla (his last album, donuts), MF Doom.

Which composerts of the 20th and 21st century do you enjoy listening to?

  • you are a disgrace to humanity and art, you hold up the stereotype of stupid vocalists

  • @PhillyT2020 Each artist has its own right. At least you acknowledge it as music, but generally atonality is not something a singer understands. There is an essence here, use the title and imagine the trunk, limbs and how it sprawls around the tree, he is drawing it with notes. (I am a singer as well, but i focus in Piano, and I know for a fact that my singer counterparts do not enjoy atonal music nearly as much as I do.)

  • @PhillyT2020 What the fuck are atonality musicians and what the fuck is Gregorian monk style? InsertName125 is bang on; if you really are a trained musician you will, no doubt, have been trained in writing pastiches as part of your composition training - try writing 4 bars of piano music in this style and put it up on youtube, go on - I dare you. Oh, and while you're at it why don't you write a rap and perform it on youtube - now there's a much easier offer; apparently anyone can do it. Tool.

  • @PhillyT2020 Where is the inauthenticity in experiencing this work positively?

  • @swirls999 shouldn't you try to understand why others don't understand. Cunt of a cunt.

  • @bluepianopoet Not when some pompous cretin tries to imply that I'm somehow a pretentious fake because I like Takemitsu's music.

  • @bluepianopoet Oh, do fuck off. Swirls' comment is letter perfect.

It's no mystery why certain people don't understand certain things: they lack certain cognitive capacities. No exploratory effort need be made to flesh out one's theory of mind on this score.

Some of us who *do* possess uncommon faculties are quite sick of maudlin levelers and their emetogenic admonitions that we tactfully pretend intelligence has been evenly distributed.

Unapologetic elitism is a good thing.

  • @swirls999 Hear, here.

  • @swirls999 i think the cunt was unnecessary o-o

  • Ok I will classify this piece as similar to abstract art (or now abstract modern art)... Just because a famous person backs up this garbage doesn't mean it has any merit... I've seen artwork that contains a bunch of small discolored dots and people love that shit... mainly because they think they are sooo artistic... when in reality its being pompous, smug and just fucking worthless... If you actually enjoy listening to this... you are probably in an insane asylum.... FUCK

  • @PhillyT2020 its experimentation mann, moving on from the conventions, whats so good about doing what someone else has done?

  • @PhillyT2020 ok?! lol

  • This is very interesting. It doesn't sound strange at all.

  • I usually love the performances you post, but this one is way off the mark when it comes to pacing. It's way too slow.

  • this music is very scary for me

  • Toru Takemitsu.....feels like saturday night after a windy afternoon storm has passed through town........

  • I am generally very irritated at dissonance, but this piece engenders in me that same odd sensation one feels when some small but painful poke or prod upon our bodies creates an almost pleasurable and addictive sensation within the pain.

  • Gorgeous piece

  • This is the perfect alliance between the East conception of the floating worlds and Debussy's aesthetic. It is also true the french composer was fascinated by far Asian musics. Takemistu is definitly a great master in refined simplicity.

  • this is awesome...

  • The title is a nice aperture into the piece, as it references undulating patterns in a larger form. The word "sketch" denotes something unfinished, music meditation process in practice.

  • Nice music.

  • great post!

  • i wish i knew the thinking behind this piece... this guy and messian blow me away harmonicly

  • brilliant, amazing posts

  • this piece is great and so is rain tree sketch II
