  • Great song from my misspent youth along with outstanding psychedelic filmography!

    Happy Trails!

  • Anyone know the history of this video? Who was it made for, and when? Absolutely great song, rarely played anymore, yet still sounds wonderful. Thanks for posting it.

  • Hell yeah, those shacks are still there! I know the trotskyites have been trying to get them torn down for years now because they can't tax them.

    HAIL QUICKSILVER!

  • Damn! What fine music! I may have only been 10yrs old at this time, but, I know good music when I hear it! :D Fuck you brain dead fuckers out there these days!

  • NOWDAYS blows.........the only place you can work at with long hair is guitar center........not rad maan haha

  • I absolutely LOVE this song, my fave Quicksilver tune. I still love John Cipollina, one of the coolest guitar players of all time - too much ignored - tell a friend about Quicksilver - they music should be heard MORE!! Man, it makes me miss the hippie days... blonde hash and fringed scarves

  • wwweeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee

  • Hey aurora1957A, you're sooooo coool mate, I've just ordered Recoil... thank you...

  • Thanks aurora1957A, I just seen an advertisement as well for Recoil and it says there is live video footage of QMS performing 'Who Do You Love', thats amazing, I have been collecting as many live bootlegs of QMS as I possibly can, and this is the first time i have ever even heard that there is live video footage of QMS doing this.... what a treat, I cannot wait to see it...... thanks again.................. Andy

  • @aofusa1

    You're welcome!

    "Recoil" is a must have!

And joining Greg Elmore and the band on the extended psych "Who Do You Love" video is Mickey Hart for some extremely tasty double drumming!!

    :)

  • Thank you aurora1957A, I found it...... muchas gracias.........

  • Awesome...... and, hey there was another version of this song here 2 days ago and it's gone ? it had the same video as this one, only it was psychedelically blurred, whoever posted it can you please re post it..... it was a studio version as well, and the awesome lovely brilliant J.C. was using lots of extra effects... it was really special...

  • @aofusa1

It's still up.. I posted it a few years ago... a search of QMS might get you to it, or you might want to check out my homepage, or youtube.com/watch?v=UT2VQeKZyHU

Please tell me if you can't view it...! that would suck...!

    Thanks!

    :)

  • I've always thought of QMS's version of "Dino's Song" as one of the great sleeper hits of the '60's. They also did a really wild, kick-ass rendition of it at the Monterey Pop Festival.

  • @pdorn777 I agree.

  • 'Dino' Valente was a stage name of songwriter Chet Powers. Another tune he wrote in the early 60s was the anthem "Get Together" which the Youngbloods had the major hit recording with a few years later. He got busted for pot in the 60s, when it was a serious deal. He sold the rights to "Get Together" to get money for legal fees. In true 'old school' music biz fashion he sold the song (pre-hit) for very little money compared to the millions it would make for the publishing house over the decades..

  • heard about song as it was used in movie Factory Girl (2006) about Edie Sedgwick.

  • I miss you Nancy

  • What a wonderful time what a wonderful feeling....thank you

  • I knew Dino in North Beach S.F in 63, and remember him singing in the first Upper Grant Ave, St. Fair, where I sold paintings etc. He was singing and playing a 12 string guitar, and was one of the best I'd ever seen. He wrote a song that may have never been recorded that was super, went something like "turn around go back down go back the way you came' and so on a most powerful song, that's a long time ago, but the memory is still fresh of this great musician, 16 yr. old country Joe there too.

  • @earlybirddan

"Pride of Man" is the tune your thinking of, but it was written by Hamilton Camp, recorded and often covered (in fact I've got a live cover in my uploads with John Cippolina on guitar). Also Pride of Man led off as the first track on the first QMS lp.

I've heard David Freiberg sing it live when touring with Paul Kantner's reformed Jefferson Starship. Great song.

Very cool you were there at the beginning. I was like 5 years old at the time!

    :)

  • I do remember hearing these later versions now, but trust me nothing compares to Dinos early solos of it w/ his 12 string, he sang @ a lot of joints then including Juanitas (BOAT) in Saus. His renditon was nothing at all what got recorded later, I remember thinking how could they have made such a departure? His style changed too when he joined up w/ the band. With his big ego he'd sure be happy today w/ what you tube has done . Farewell my lady Love comes closest to Dinos solo style, GOOD.

  • @earlybirddan That song is "Pride of Man" from their first album.

  • @earlybirddan My grandpa Gary (Grubb) Duncan was in that band

  • @earlybirddan - I think you have "Pride of Man" in mind - check out the other Quicksilver posts here.. peace...

  • @earlybirddan Are you thinking of the Crabby Appleton's song "Go Back" ????

  • @earlybirddan barry melton too...........you did the abstracts?

  • Can't tell from this version, since you hardly see the band playing, but the Monterey Pop video makes it look like the band is sponsored by Gibson! Kinda nice to see nary a Strat in sight. QMS has always been my favorite band, and JC one of my top five fave guitarists, definitely a unique sound.

  • I used to have a Quicksilver messenger service album and the cover was like a pony express rider...i think 'Who do you love' was the first song...am i dreaming or is this a real memory?

  • @Jengybhoy

"Happy Trails", a work often sited as the single best example of SF ballroom era psychedelia ever recorded, as well as QMS at their very best

    :)

  • right on

  • yes- you're correct...no slide, a whammy bar, finger picks and a lot of mods...

    Thanks for the heads up...

  • fucking amazing <3 quicksilver!

  • i think the monterey pop version is more fun

  • Remember the heliport?

  • Great Doc !

  • lead guitar - all you need is a Gibson SG and a slide.......

  • @fusion2000

Cippollina didn't use a slide....and you might want to check Johns equipment out and see out that it more tan "just an SG"....

  • gr8 footage

    thx aurora!

  • Sounds a little bit like jim Morrison.....great Song

  • @Abraxus81 u think? .l.

  • This brings back pleasent memories of when I was a little one. My dad turned me on to their music and all the other bands from San Francisco (60's) Thanks for posting!!

    5 Stars!!

  • All I ever wanted to do was love you........WBCN-Boston, 1970.......

  • @toddwindyhill They went heavy metal for awhile...now they're gone.

  • I saw QMS jan 1970...my first fillmore east experience....havin NO barometer at all,I was totally digging dino's presence...there was plenty of music top go around....whether if was his stuff or other tunes....cipplolina shined....greg elmore was amazing.....duncan was beyond cool...freivbeg was a monster.....i actually argued with some hardcore anti dino fans who were protesting out on the sidewalk...get real man- dino was an original member and should be respected, yo!!

  • I LOVE THIS DAMN SONG...

  • does anyone know the lead guitar part for this song, if so then please message me

  • bouncy

  • YEAH...LOVE IT TOO!!!

  • love this!!!

  • john cipollina, best guitarist ever!!

  • Quite nostalgic to me - almost forgot this nice tune; recorded it on an 'ancient' cassette tape back in 1982. Time flies.

  • ....groovy...,man

  • amin1950 sense you brought it up.

Droping names to try to impress me?

Noll & Dora go waaay back-50's.

Greg spells it Miki so argue with The Bull?

"Miki Dora was probably the purest surfer who ever waxed a board."

    Greg Noll

Please amin1950 find someone who not from California & times who doesn't know to impress.

Thanks to the nice person who posted this very cool video of QMS & the old houseboat docks in Sausalito that I knew well like Miki in Action at Maibu both California Classic

  • amin1950 your quote in regards to Quicksilver to me.

"And what the eff' does the 'Bay Area have to do with it either? "

Is amusing to me. What's next?

"What does Malibu have to do with Dora"

That's Miki Dora as anyone who knows can tell you.

Why don't you put on Grand Funk Railroad

plug in your guitar & play along-You know that world & I'd be happy to leave you to it.

  • Yes that is to say.

    I saw the band pre-dino

Too many times Too many years.

Not to know the big difference.

If you look around at other comments

From people from SF they agree with me.

But your for sure entitled to your opinion.

Just spare me you telling me about them.

I don't tell you about Grand Funk Railroad,

  • When you see DIno fronting the band in "Go Ride the Music" DVD, you see what a good front man he was; QMS with and without Dino were both great -

  • Did you ever see him play live with QMS in San Francisco? Everyone pretty much left the band after he got out of jail and started playing with them. Everyone I knew back then hated it when he was in the band. If you like seeing someone pose and rotate their shoulder - then I guess Dino's the guy for you.

  • no, i didn't. just from seeing that clip, he looked like he may have had some stage presence. for me, Happy Trails is QMS. never liked them much after, just the occasional song. IF IT AINT CHIP IT AINT QUICK.

  • Hey Vic-I saw him play w/ QMS in SF & saw QMS play in SF for years before Dino.

Everyone I knew hated it when he was in the band too & so did John, Nicky, David & Ron their manager who all split to get away from Dino's Act & Ego.

Never met anyone who was there & saw QMS as much as only we could before Dino who doesn't agree 100% w/ you.

    Happy Trails

  • @maida1982a Not all on the scene at the time would concur. But it's a long time ago, and time has a way of polishing the edges off old resentments.

  • How about catching the Dead, QMS, and Jefferson airplane, the same day. They used to do that at Golden Gate Park Panhandle. That would have been crazy.

  • Comment removed

  • And what a thrill it was! Hopping on a greyhound bus and trekking out to the panhandle was a huge adventure for a young teenager. The background soundtrack of Dead, Airplane and QMS made for indelibly inked audio memories

  • @headwall07 And it cannot be put into words how jealous I am lol.

I love all the personal comments on YouTube from people who were there. I missed out by being born in 1971. The more people add their own stories to the YouTube clips, the greater an understand 60's fans who weren't there get of it and I for one love it.

  • This was on the first QMS album, I think it was 1967.

  • It came out in 1968 but they were playing all the songs in 1967.

Love the cover art by The Legendary

    Rick Griffin

  • I'm in NY which is the total opposite of what California is. When I hear this song it just makes me think of a beautiful, warm California day.

  • in the film, "factory girl", sienna miller, as "edie",walks quickly across campus in a skirt that really flatters her beautiful bum. the song playing on the soundtrack during this scene is this one!

  • love this song soo much!! 60´s forever!!

  • WHY,WHY, DID IT(Performing Music & writing the Same),WORK so WELL in these days? Seemingly,it had never been Done this way Yet, An Answer,or perhaps a parallel complement to "The British Invasion"(Phase II)Maybe,it was Old California..and its'"Golden Republic" Status,or perhaps, could it be Bands didn't Have to Focus on IndividualSucesses,

Leaving their Mark in Rock History,

or perhaps,it was a Mixture of Forces,

    Like Preferring a Good-Mixed Mongrile Dog,over its Pure-Bred Cousin? I DUNNO!

  • bill well said old cali was cool cali now is very plastic

  • Oh man what a gem! Look at all those funky ass hipster houseboats!!!!!!.....all gone,,,,,Yuppies suck.

  • @dullsville Oh, they're still there, all right, riding anchor at Sausalito's famous Gate Five harbor. The problem is, they now fetch $500,000 or more because Marin County got gentrified to the hilt in the 1970s, and is now about the richest county in the USA. You're right about yuppies, though...it must have been nice to live in such a place back then with artists and freaks, rather than bankers and lawyers.

  • It's still a nice place to live - and the rents are cheaper than in the City.

  • @mikal9000 IT WAS

  • This really captures the essence of what the QMS was! Great SF band! Wished I had a time machine!

  • Yeah! Some great flash backs of days!

  • so so so SO awesome!!

    THANK YOU, aurora1957A!!

    Cipollina lives!!!!

  • Awesome video aurora..thanks!

  • Five Stars
