STD - Standard Trunk Dialcodes. In the olden days it used to take ages to dial long distance. My parents used to have to book a call days in advance to dial from UK to Berlin.

Subscriber trunk dialling -- faster than having to book a long distance (!) call via the operator.
STD means something QUITE different thease days!
