Here's the actual process: Rod McKuen wrote "The Lovers" alone. Brel, having admired McKuen's adaptation/translation of his songs, returned the favour by translating The Lovers into french, which became "Les amants de coeur". So basically, this version is a cover of Rod McKuen's song. No Brel.
