I am most surprised at how expensive things were at a discount store. This commercial is 30 years old and you can buy those items today for the same or even less money at wal-mart. That is really 0% inflation over 30 years on kitchen goods
I used to walk to the Union NJ Two Guys when I was a kid. Good selection & prices. When the chain closed in 1982, it became a Bradlees and is now a Lowe's.
i remember my brother and i would go there all the time. the one in rochester, ny (greece) used to love the small arcade with the bowling alley would love to turn back the clock and relive those days
There was a Two Guys on Lincoln Highway outside of Lancaster that closed in the late 70's/early 80's. Think Jamesway took over half of the Two Guys store that was there while the other half remained empty. Now that Jamesway is gone, I have no clue what is there now.
Two Guys in Hackensack near Riverside Square Mall. Went there all the time with my parents. Alexander's on Route 4 was another store we always went to.
My parents would shop at the Two Guys stores in Garfield and Lodi, NJ(Route 17). When I was a kid, you'd get teased constantly if you went to school dressed in some Two Guys "specials".
I remember three different Two Guys location. One in NE Philadelphia, the second in Bensalem, PA, and the third in Langhorne (Levittown), PA. The Bensalem location has since been demolished and replaced by Kohl's. 2/3 of the Ne Philadelphia has been demolished and replaced by Best Buy and American Signature Furinture. The Langhorne location is now "The Dump", with the old "Jefferson Ward" sign frontage.
First it was (In buffalo NY) Two Guys, then Gold Circle, the Hills and Ames took half each, now most of those store fronts are empty or something totally different. I miss stores like this.......
I remember a lot of Two Guys stores in Northern New Jersey in the 70s. A lot of the locations became Bradlees after Two Guys went out of business.
When I was in junior high school the big insult was "I heard a bunch of stores are named after your parents --- Two Guys". And those were fighting words.
Used to go to the one on Rt. 18 in E. Brunswick. They used to have big sales in the warehouse next to that store. I can still smell the Sabrett hot dog cart that was in the vestibule when you walked in. My uncle used to work in the Harrison store on the grocery side. I still have an old ink pricing gun that he gave me.
@steviep5651 I lived in S.R. I went to 2guys in E.B. all the time. I remember the hot dog guy, the mini bowling arcade, the roped off section on sundays . . . .
Two Guys was my favorite department store for toys when I was a kid growing up in the 1960s. We shopped at the Two Guys in East Brunswick, NJ. Good memories.
I use to go to that one when I lived in Brick too. I have a lot of memories. My mom use to work there where they sold the "potato knish" near the center entrance. I was visiting Brick last May for the first time in over 30 years. It's ShopRight and a few other stores now. Expanded too with a nice Bagel shop at the Brick Blvd side. Remember Rickles and R&S across the street. Brick Lanes Bowling Alley was gone, so sad, so many memories gone from the 70's.
@p8ryot i just moved back to brick.been living in az for 15 years.yea old bowling alley is gone.now its on the backside of brick plaza.rickels has been gone for atleast 25 years.you remember nichols and grand union, caldor, comsumers, burger chef, poor boys subs, all the movie theaters, laurlton circle....all gone.to bad.so many memories at all those places too.bradlees closed about the same time as two guys.they just leveled the old bradlees/foodtown shopping center.
It was nice to see it all, I moved to Anchorage, AK 32 years ago and re-lived some memories around Brick and Two guys. I remember seeing classics at the old Laurelton Drive In. It's a Wal-Mart now. My old schools Lanes Mills, Emma Havens, VMMS, and of course BTHS. Was good to see they're still open
Two Guys was the bomb. I worked in Wharehouse #7 in E. Hanover just before they closed. People use to steal shit left & right out of there. I saw head of security & another exeutive stealing pool tables. Nobody gave a shit. They converted one of the Wharehouses into a Home Depot.
yes a lot if merchandise fell off of the back of the truck there...i knew a guy who was selling all kinds of stuff he stole from there...not to mention the bigshots from Two Guys who stole more merchandise than you could dream of...
OMG! I would never had thought I would ever see these commercials again. My family used to shop at the Two Guys location in Culver City (part of L.A.) on Jefferson Blvd. It's now a Target.
I still have the photo strip that my brother and I took at the photo booth in the Hackensack store. Funny about the bowling - it did suck but it beat walking around the store with mom and dad.
WOW! that scarecrow makes that toaster oven magically appear out of thin air! This store kicked ass. I remember going to the Walden ave location (Buffalo NY) as a young kid. They had an awesome arcade area complete with several mini bowling lanes and a bunch of other amusement devices. I really miss that place.
I used to visit that store on a regular basis (It took me 20 minutes to walk there!). I always remembered the clerks at the Pharmacy department always seemed to be rather bleary eyed. Perhaps they were experimenting with something in the back room.
I remember them as Two Guys From Harrison, when I was a little kid in North Jersey. That would have been late-1950s. It might have been somewhere along Route 46.
Walmart is just a modern day Two-Guys when you look at the physical make-up of the store. one stop shopping! Two guys lost out to the indoor Mall craze in the late 70s-into the 80s. Now it seems that walmart has capitalized on the faze out of the struggling malls, and not to mention the price range differerence on certain items!
Two Guys Department stores have been converted to mainly strip centers and are owned by Vornado Real estate investment trust. Steve Ross the owner of the company bought out the original owners and since Two Guys owned the land beneath their store the company had a lot of intrinsic value. Warren Buffet was on the board of directors and did very well with the stock.
Also Bernie Marcus who started Home Depot once was a top executive at Two Guys / Vornado. Vornado owned a company called Builders Emporium and Bernie Marcus was one of the top guys there.
Man, I remember the Two Guys in Woodbridge NJ, they used to have an arcade downstairs...i was young as hell but i remember that place was the bomb....then came Razz Ma Tazz lol
Thanks for posting this. Brings back a LOT of memories for me. I use to go to Two Guys in Cherry Hill NJ. It's replaced by a Walmart now. I remember this store having a chicken that you play tic tac toe against. I also remember some type of dancing doll puppet that you could control. For some reason I remember it having a grocery store too (could be wrong).
There was a two guys store in Norwalk, CA (the building still exist, its a indoor swapmeet). What is significant about that location is that its directly across the street (alondra bl.) from the old Excelcior High were part of the movie Grease, among others, was filmed.
You're right about the TJ Maxx but there was never a Best Buy there. The last major tenant was MediaPlay. It also held a "Silo" electronics outlet, a drug store, and a few other short-lived places. I still remember the enlarged photos of Niagara Falls above the photo department in Two Guys. . . .
You know it! Those bowling games were the shit! I was just a little kid, but I remember going to the end of the lane and cheating by knocking the pins down with my hand.
@clarkbell I remember the one in Broomall. We used to shop there all the time growing up. My brother and I would always go to the 'arcade' area and play the jukebox.
