There is a Knol with a link to a scan of Orchesographie at the Library of Congress. Go to Knol and search on Arbeau. The first hit is the article. The music is still very readable nowadays. Peter Warlock pretty much copied Orchesographic and called it his own work. There is an easy piano version at easybyte.org.
Is there a version with Harpsichord? Or Pipe Organ? This song is bloody amazing! Don't know what it is about it, but it really tugs at the psyche, for me, it does.
This melody dates back to the English Renaissance. Thirty or forty years ago, the American poet John Hollander wrote lyrics for the melody, creating an ode in praise of Elizabeth I.
The melody is called 'La belle qui tiens ma vie' (the beautiful one who holds my life). It is a mediaeval French melody which could be applied to a number of renaissance measures, including the pavane (as here) and the galliard. Peter Warlock, as redetrigan says, used this melody in the Capriol Suite.
thank you for narrowing it down. I have heard the classical score, and unfortunately I'm only looking for this version and can't find it ANYWHERE! such is life, huh? lol
This movie is fantastic and I love that you made clip of the song! "For your sake, I would hunt wolf instead of rabbit, drink vodka instead of whiskey" LOVE that line (what girl doesn't fall for it :P)
Have just finished writing a paper on this film adaptation ... Every scene is like an exquisite painting ... and Tilda Swinton is nothing less than breathtaking!
Tilda - love you

True high Renaissance court music, but it sounds very 1550's-1580's.

Note that the Pavane here is an arrangement of the Pavane from Peter Warlock's "Capriol Suite."
redetrigan 4 years ago 3
so the title of this video is mispelled?
(pavane not pavanne)
xynaxis 4 years ago 2
no, I've been looking up the soundtrack for this specific piece and they are all spelled "pavanne"
