She can clearly see Dennis is nearly in a coma and starts by asking him a question?! The other Beach Boys are idiots to have allowed him on if they can't stand the awkwardness. Dennis was a genius and for fuck sake his album is the best thing after 1966. Mike is JEALOUS of Denny. He looks like an angry ginger vagina that don't get any. lol
@gypsyhippie71 If you read my comment again - I state he is a genius and also that they shouldn't have let him on this interview. I didn't say he is a genius for being pissed on a sofa on live TV.
@laosandburma I would be embarrassed and mad as hell if my sibling or family member, or even friend, acted like that. Can't he even stay sober for an hour for a damn interview?? Very sad.
@gypsyhippie71 Do you realize how damaged Dennis was? Like someone else said, alcoholism. He should NOT have been allowed on television like this. He was not "together" and to tell him to "Get it together for an hour so we can look like professionals to a bunch of simpletons on television" isn't going to make him clean up.
@laosandburma Oh, shut the fuck up already. Why does Mike even need to be brought into this? How is it the least bit relevant to how bad of shape Dennis was in at the time?
@Cruzman3609 and you can see though that after pet sounds they really didn't come back together like that to make a great album. They were serviceable yeah with sporadic hits but it was fractured forever after pet sounds
@runnersdialzero333 They had some stuff here and there, (Sunflower, 'Til I Die) but they never came close to repeating the level of brilliance they had before smile crashed.
@ragingbull888 keeping a consistent level of genius almost never happens. give those records another listen. just because it's not 10/10 all the way through doesn't mean there aren't some brilliant, amazing songs and that it isn't worth the time, especially in the late 60s and early 70s. even after that, even to this day (see brian's "midnight's another day" from 2008) these kids are still doing incredible things.
Okay the problem with celebrity criticism is the humanness of each person is lost in completely inorganic objectivism. Dennis had his demons and (God rest his weary soul) he fought them as best he could. He was the rebel of the group. Just from his presence in interviews, his bold drumming skills, his dynamic spirit in all of their videos. His efforts in the group were definitely important!
Dennis seems pretty drunk but I wonder what Brian's on. Doesn't seem to be on amphetamines if he was would probably be more lucid. Prolly just stoned on some weed
@jwild611 Brian was most likely on some pretty strong anti-depressants, similiar to Lithium. The way Dennis is writhing around on that couch, it almost looks like he is coming down off of stimulants or is drunk off his ass. I have to say though, that Carl, Mike and Al, all look mortified beyond belief.

Mike love is a breaded bread sandwich and a soul crushing bastard. Brian tried to change the sound-Smile-but Mike with his infinite lack of vision shit all over it. He actually called Good Vibrations "Avant garde shit"...What a trashbag...A POX ON MIKE LOVE!
Carl Wilson always seemed like the "normal" guy in the band. Al Jardine might qualify but I don't think I've ever heard the man talk in an interview before. Mike never shuts up. Brian and Dennis were pretty much on Pluto.
How sad to see this. I am sure Dennis is now in a better place, taken away from all the pain he couldn't release. He wasn't perfect, none of us are..."in the arms of the angels, fly away from here..' Carl handled the interview situation with love and class for his brother.
I don't think Dennis ever got over his involvement with Charlie Manson. He always felt that the blame for the Tate/LaBianca murders rested on his shoulders for having showed Manson the house that Tate would later buy. It tortured his soul until his death.
Got to admit Brian's 'Be My Baby' comment made me laugh. Very deadpan I think. Brian does have a self-deprecating sense of humour at times. Dennis looked liked he'd had a good night or five.
Thanks for posting this, it is great to see this vintage interview. It is very telling (Dennis is not in a good place) and Brian stoically saying he listens to "Be My Baby" is great (he used to listen to it literally dozens of times in a row)

@MISTAHgoodnight Your comment was so funny. Very descriptive. I think their faces were sour because of the state Dennis was in. ( a bit of an embarrassment) I thought Brian was going to burst, when Dennis said they don't play their records, "they go to bed early" Mike Love just loves the sound of his own voice.
@MISTAHgoodnight Hilarious but true! Poor Carl always was the grounded one, trapped between all those flamboyant personalities (except maybe "mute Hobbit" Al Jardine :)
I, too, was glad that the David Hasselhoff-looking manager saved the day. Thanks for the laugh.
Wel wel well mr. goodnight sleep tight! Because all o'them are GREAT I'm sad dennis took a lot of drugs during this period and drowned but the beach boys as a whole are great.
This was a common revolving cycle for Dennis. People (fans) were encouraging him to be the guy he was....How was he ever going to get clean if that kind of pressure and expectation was put on him? I may get hate mail...But I love Dennis and I am simply highlighting the psychosis of booze!
no hate mail from me! Dennis was/is so vastly underrated. have you heard the recently re-released and remastered Pacific Ocean Blue? it's dennis' masterpiece.
Drink and get wasted...Feel self-pity and then enjoy expressing those feelings through song writing. Gain adulation from those songs feel a kind of attention from people and again feel self pity as those fans have made it almost enjoyable to feel self-pity . Where are we now? Oh yes back to "Drink and get wasted"
Ah he had fun...Call it sad or whatever but Dennis was never the type of person to watch a movie and eat a pizza "BORING!" More fun to get blasted and then survive to do it again. Fantastic songwriter but even songwriting is no fun (to Dennis) unless there is a supply if stimulants available to fuel the self-pity that is needed to write the songs he did...I'm saying as a psychological fact.
tragic. this looks like alcohol abuse to me... needs a crutch to prop his head on... sad how much strife these guys have endured. but they kept slugging and made some fantastic music.
What's sad is that you couldn't spoof this any better. Poor Carl looks like the peacekeeper & the lone legitimate media voice of the band whilst disturbed at Dennis' behavior here. Brian actually looks pretty together here (considering).
Yes,DRUGS are EVIL,simple, look what they do to humans.
The parisites that make and deal the drugs are assholes,Sadly these guys go to partys with the parisites that take and sell drugs,The assholes should be shot
gimme a break, drugs are fuckin fun... and anyone who says they aren't is obviously a nancy-reagan-brainwashed right wing fool. LSD!!! MUSHROOMS!!! PEYOTE!!! party time, fools...
it's really sad, uncomfortable, and embarassing as a beach boys fan to see dennis like this on national television. it's a shame he didnt get help! just goes to show how dysfunctional this family was.
I like the fact that Joan called on Dennis first. She obviously knew he was wasted but that's the point - it's an entertainment show. Those kind of interviews make for good publicity and higher ratings. Look how much attention was paid to Lauer's interview with Cruise a few years ago. If you don't want to look like a fool, don't get wasted and go on TV (especially at 7:00am!!). Brian doesn't exactly seem clear-headed either.
I basically became a Beach Boys fan one week ago, after watching the Smile documentary and concert. I don't know much about them yet, but I get the impression that Mike was a total schmuck. Even when I showed a YouTube clip of a 1964 concert to my girlfriend, she said "that lead singer looks like a creepy old man."
@ 4:20 when brian says..."most of it, yeah, i think mike can answer that better then i do" ! Is that a slap on the face on national tv or what ? LOL, mr love, you are targeted my man.
I love & adore Brian to the 10th power and no doubt he's a musical genius and was the creative force behind the band for years, but it's sad that his biggest supporter in the BBs never got the recognition he deserved for the talented "genius" he was in his own right & what he contributed to the band. Maybe he wouldn't have been in the "state" he was in there had he been shown a little bit of the love he that he was showing Brian. Carl was way gifted too and doesn't get credit. RIP Denny & Carl
FUCK YOU MIKE LOVE!!!! and Brian has given so much - everybody who dwells on the bad and likes to play critic with no gratitude or talent for themselves... you suck and should go see the Mike Love show... I mean.. the so called Beach Boys... I will be at the BW show! Mike Love has so much interest in the fact that they are still together and acts like its a good thing because he has no talent of his own. Brian would have been better off if he could have been left alone by love. F U MIKE LOVE!
this is so sad...while drugs may have helped inspire them to write music (which is ambiguous, since people write music, not drugs) it also wrecked them. it is tragic. to have brought such joy in music to so many people and yet to be in this state makes them heroes. long live the BEACH BOYS!!
Yeah, he is totally out of it but you have to love him and respect that he is the one who is aware enough to pipe in at 6 minutes and tell it like it is! Despite what he is on... I wish that support came out more often for Brian throughout... because ML sucks!
Wow this was.... wow. Brian was totally zoned out. Dennis was either stoned or drunk or both out of his mind. Mike was talking out of his ego. Carl was probably the only level headed one here. I felt bad for him and Al the most because he knew he was the only Wilson brother who was responsible and was the only one who was mentally self aware enough to see how embarrassing that interview was. I think he was totally pissed off at Dennis here. I still love this band though.
i agree with you for the most part, but let's not kid ourselves, Carl had an enormous cocaine problem himself. he did usually appear to be the sane one, but he grew up in the same hell that was the Wilson home. those boys were the victims of child abuse. all three of them were damaged goods, who also happened to be three of the most talented artists of the 20th century. RIP Carl and Dennis
poor joan lunden? Its obvious that bitch purposelu asked dennis the first question. Carl and the rest of the guys should have tied dennis up backstage
Cool song! By the Musical God named BRIAN WILSON!!!! Too bad Mike Love now inisists he is the Beach Boys and continues to go around singing Wilsons songs... Now that Carl and Dennis Wilson are dead. He can sing them all and claim he co-wrote it, hahaha what a joke! What a good strategy. What a "talented" person.
im surprised they let dennis on tv in that state! no wonder carl left after that period, how sad is that and al is just sitting there probably thinking shit what next!
Yeah, he was one of Elvis' best friends since the 50s. He later became Carl Wilson's Manager and the Beach Boys' manager. His wife Myrna Smith (of Elvis' background group "Sweet inspirations") co-wrote Carl's soloalbums with him.
According to the book I am reading at the moment, Heroes and Villains (The True Story Of The Beach Boys),Dennis was going through a rough time of Drugs and alcoholism...he tried rehab a few times...was begged to go by the other band members...but he would always walk out after one day...he really needed help badly...so sad..
There are so many things wrong with this footage. Number one--everyone is on cocaine or heroin, their manager is wasted. Dennis..ive never seen a public appearance this gone lol dennis "this abc?"..wtf? haha "hows david"? are you fucking kidding me. Brian is zonked brian -"they like hard rock, barbara streisand"...geez
Wow, what a beaten down group of guys. This was painful to watch.

tragic. this looks like alcohol abuse to me... needs a crutch to prop his head on... sad how much strife these guys have endured. but they kept slugging and made some fantastic music.
stumptacular 3 years ago 2
What's sad is that you couldn't spoof this any better. Poor Carl looks like the peacekeeper & the lone legitimate media voice of the band whilst disturbed at Dennis' behavior here. Brian actually looks pretty together here (considering).

gimme a break, drugs are fuckin fun... and anyone who says they aren't is obviously a nancy-reagan-brainwashed right wing fool. LSD!!! MUSHROOMS!!! PEYOTE!!! party time, fools...

it's really sad, uncomfortable, and embarassing as a beach boys fan to see dennis like this on national television. it's a shame he didnt get help! just goes to show how dysfunctional this family was.
weezadam 3 years ago 2
Why did they insist on putting a wasted D. Wilson on Tv?
alramone1 3 years ago 2

Even when I showed a YouTube clip of a 1964 concert to my girlfriend, she said "that lead singer looks like a creepy old man."
sinosemite 3 years ago
@ 4:20 when brian says..."most of it, yeah, i think mike can answer that better then i do" ! Is that a slap on the face on national tv or what ? LOL, mr love, you are targeted my man.

Brian: 'they play our records on theyre record players...; Dennis: "or they goto bed early!!!" hahah RIP denny always missed

This interviewer really pisses me off.She could see that Dennis was in a bad state,so she tries to corner him and expose his weakness
bk5612 3 years ago
Joan Lunden isn't trying to "corner him and expose his weakness."
She's not that type of interviewer.
It's clear that she's assuming that Dennis is just sleepy or groggy due to the early West Coast time.
"Dennis, we keeping you awake?"
The time displayed is 8:47 am in New York; which means it's 5:47 in L.A.

Poor Dennis. What a lovely guy !! Such a waste of such a talented man.
He should have had help and he would still be here now.
You are missed Denny !
scottishsue 3 years ago 8
FUCK YOU MIKE LOVE!!!! and Brian has given so much - everybody who dwells on the bad and likes to play critic with no gratitude or talent for themselves... you suck and should go see the Mike Love show... I mean.. the so called Beach Boys... I will be at the BW show! Mike Love has so much interest in the fact that they are still together and acts like its a good thing because he has no talent of his own. Brian would have been better off if he could have been left alone by love. F U MIKE LOVE!
suparni 3 years ago
this is so sad...while drugs may have helped inspire them to write music (which is ambiguous, since people write music, not drugs) it also wrecked them. it is tragic. to have brought such joy in music to so many people and yet to be in this state makes them heroes. long live the BEACH BOYS!!

Sadly. :( These great stars, we think, have everything: Girls, monye, fame, fortune, yet they are so unhappy.

Indeed. Whatever happened to "Oh, Dennis is staying home cause he's 'exhausted from touring'."?
BooNube 3 years ago
Yeah, he is totally out of it but you have to love him and respect that he is the one who is aware enough to pipe in at 6 minutes and tell it like it is! Despite what he is on... I wish that support came out more often for Brian throughout... because ML sucks!
suparni 3 years ago 4
Wow this was.... wow. Brian was totally zoned out. Dennis was either stoned or drunk or both out of his mind. Mike was talking out of his ego. Carl was probably the only level headed one here. I felt bad for him and Al the most because he knew he was the only Wilson brother who was responsible and was the only one who was mentally self aware enough to see how embarrassing that interview was. I think he was totally pissed off at Dennis here. I still love this band though.
musicispower84 4 years ago 2
i agree with you for the most part, but let's not kid ourselves, Carl had an enormous cocaine problem himself. he did usually appear to be the sane one, but he grew up in the same hell that was the Wilson home. those boys were the victims of child abuse. all three of them were damaged goods, who also happened to be three of the most talented artists of the 20th century. RIP Carl and Dennis
tatelabianca 2 years ago 4
Carl had been over with the cocaine problem for a couple years at this point

I was really happy to hear Dennis speak up about Brian around 6:15

Despite being totally out of it, he still managed to stick up for Brian.
This would be funny if Dennis had pulled out of this period instead of getting worse and dying :(

I'm not a fan of Mike Love

Jerry Schilling wasn't he with Elvis?
AscendentInLeo 4 years ago
Yeah, he was one of Elvis' best friends since the 50s. He later became Carl Wilson's Manager and the Beach Boys' manager. His wife Myrna Smith (of Elvis' background group "Sweet inspirations") co-wrote Carl's soloalbums with him.
mahkindofmusic 4 years ago
oh, that's right! she co-wrote "Heaven", one of Carl's most beautiful songs.
