  • Wow, what a beaten down group of guys. This was painful to watch.

  • So sad, live on Dennis and Carl... and Brian if you ever happen across this site you are one of my greatest inspirations.

  • dennis is acting more like a beach bum than a beach boy :\

  • Drunken Bum , abused his privileged position.

  • brian looks a bit disgusted with the way dennis is acting.

  • Brian was after the emotion, the depth.

It seems to me mike was more of a surface person. More concerned with fame and wealth.

  • She can clearly see Dennis is nearly in a coma and starts by asking him a question?! The other Beach Boys are idiots to have allowed him on if they can't stand the awkwardness. Dennis was a genius and for fuck sake his album is the best thing after 1966. Mike is JEALOUS of Denny. He looks like an angry ginger vagina that don't get any. lol

  • @laosandburma So the definition of a genius is someone who acts like an idiot on camera?

  • @gypsyhippie71 If you read my comment again - I state he is a genius and also that they shouldn't have let him on this interview. I didn't say he is a genius for being pissed on a sofa on live TV.

  • @laosandburma I would be embarrassed and mad as hell if my sibling or family member, or even friend, acted like that. Can't he even stay sober for an hour for a damn interview?? Very sad.

  • @gypsyhippie71 It's called "alcoholism" it's a disease.

  • @gypsyhippie71 Do you realize how damaged Dennis was? Like someone else said, alcoholism. He should NOT have been allowed on television like this. He was not "together" and to tell him to "Get it together for an hour so we can look like professionals to a bunch of simpletons on television" isn't going to make him clean up.

  • @laosandburma Oh, shut the fuck up already. Why does Mike even need to be brought into this? How is it the least bit relevant to how bad of shape Dennis was in at the time?

  • I love how Mike Love's idiocy shines through to most people

  • Poor Dennis he wasn't doing well at this time, losing the studio and his boat... his sanctuarys

  • Carl was the man, Brian was amazing too, Mike Love is an idiot

  • Very awkward. Carl could not take it any more!

    RIP Denis and Carl Wilson

  • I have three daughters, I play a record called be my baby. Kill humans rape cattle

  • @Cruzman3609 and you can see though that after pet sounds they really didn't come back together like that to make a great album. They were serviceable yeah with sporadic hits but it was fractured forever after pet sounds

  • @Kslater23 it all ended when the smile project went down the drain

  • @ragingbull888 No, it didn't.

  • @runnersdialzero333 They had some stuff here and there, (Sunflower, 'Til I Die) but they never came close to repeating the level of brilliance they had before smile crashed.

  • @ragingbull888 keeping a consistent level of genius almost never happens. give those records another listen. just because it's not 10/10 all the way through doesn't mean there aren't some brilliant, amazing songs and that it isn't worth the time, especially in the late 60s and early 70s. even after that, even to this day (see brian's "midnight's another day" from 2008) these kids are still doing incredible things.

  • So whats wrong with Brian?? he talks like a special needs person.

  • @azrial4421 read his bio, he went bonkers

  • @azrial4421 Don't be nasty, people can't help it if they do have special needs

  • Okay the problem with celebrity criticism is the humanness of each person is lost in completely inorganic objectivism. Dennis had his demons and (God rest his weary soul) he fought them as best he could. He was the rebel of the group. Just from his presence in interviews, his bold drumming skills, his dynamic spirit in all of their videos. His efforts in the group were definitely important!

  • "Dennis i know it's early" but Dennis used to drink a gigantic bottle of rum and orange as he got out of bed every day

  • The fact that they allowed Dennis on national live television uproars me. He was in no condition for an interview. Hate that interviewer too.

  • Dennis seems pretty drunk but I wonder what Brian's on. Doesn't seem to be on amphetamines if he was would probably be more lucid. Prolly just stoned on some weed

  • @jwild611 Brian was most likely on some pretty strong anti-depressants, similiar to Lithium. The way Dennis is writhing around on that couch, it almost looks like he is coming down off of stimulants or is drunk off his ass. I have to say though, that Carl, Mike and Al, all look mortified beyond belief.

  • this interview is not in anyway funny. Denny was just trying to recover from his birthday the night before, even though he was a partied out guy!

  • @ 1:14 it seems like Carl thought she was about to ask him about Dennis's state.

  • i haven't seen any recent interviews with Brian but in almost all i remember up to the mid 90s he seems always like sedated or something... stuttering and having difficult to speak coherently.... maybe all his drug abuse resulted in brain damage?

  • I have just read Brian's autobiography, "Wouldn't It Be Nice", and, say what we like about Gene Landy, but he got results, getting Brian back on his feet again. The REAL enemy of Brian 's was Mike Love. Brian was terrified of him, his bullying and caustic tongue. I cannot take to him at all. It was as if HE was the Beach Boys, no-one else had a say.

  • mike love could sing but he seemed like a hater lol..and damn dennis looks like he was spaced out =/

  • Would there be this many wonderfully different comment's about this interview if THE Beach Boy wasn't fucked up 'er than Hogan's Goat? Yeah, Dennis shouldn't have been made/allowed to be there { What are they paying Jerry GoodHair Manager for? } but this is the real makeup of these guy's as a group so enjoy the real look at a very talented but troubled SuperGroup

  • Dennis must have been on a serious bender the night before.

  • Mike love is a breaded bread sandwich and a soul crushing bastard. Brian tried to change the sound-Smile-but Mike with his infinite lack of vision shit all over it. He actually called Good Vibrations "Avant garde shit"...What a trashbag...A POX ON MIKE LOVE!

  • @naisammon Mike says he loves Pet Sounds and I have audio "comments from" him on "every track" on that album!

  • @M3town3 oooo can you relay them to me some how

  • @truthasfineprint If you like beach boys you should know about pet sounds. i know you do but you've got to understand what I mean.

  • omfg Dennis is waaaaaaaaaaaaaaay out of his mind here, lol.

  • Why was Al not allowed to talk?

  • @jwild611 He has nothing worth saying. That's his lot in life.

  • Carl Wilson always seemed like the "normal" guy in the band. Al Jardine might qualify but I don't think I've ever heard the man talk in an interview before. Mike never shuts up. Brian and Dennis were pretty much on Pluto.

  • As much of a dick Mike is, he does give Brian a lot of praise for his abilities.

  • How sad to see this. I am sure Dennis is now in a better place, taken away from all the pain he couldn't release. He wasn't perfect, none of us are..."in the arms of the angels, fly away from here..' Carl handled the interview situation with love and class for his brother.

  • I love Dennis Wilson

  • Carl looks like the only one that's coherent

  • dennis looks like a werewolf

  • I love to hear Mike Love's voice too and all the rest of them. Never before and never again will there be a group this loved and this talented.

  • I don't think Dennis ever got over his involvement with Charlie Manson. He always felt that the blame for the Tate/LaBianca murders rested on his shoulders for having showed Manson the house that Tate would later buy. It tortured his soul until his death.

  • Poor Dennis indeed, his hour glass was quickly running out.

  • Poor Dennis he was going through a lot of hardships at this time. It's sad he hit the bottle to try and cope with them.

  • Got to admit Brian's 'Be My Baby' comment made me laugh. Very deadpan I think. Brian does have a self-deprecating sense of humour at times. Dennis looked liked he'd had a good night or five.

  • Brain had obviously been affected by the drugs he took too..

  • come on dennis!

  • Man that was painful, so many tragedies in hollywood.

  • its sad to see Dennis this way

  • Poor Brian... they propped him up to squeeze more money out of the joke they'd become.

  • How the hell did Brian just stare straight into the camera still like a damn zombie?

  • Thanks for posting this, it is great to see this vintage interview. It is very telling (Dennis is not in a good place) and Brian stoically saying he listens to "Be My Baby" is great (he used to listen to it literally dozens of times in a row)

  • Yes, Al wasn't able to get a word in edgewise. And WTH was up with Dennis? He must've been drunk.

  • Poor Al was left out!

  • Comment removed

  • Why the hell is Brian's mouth all crooked?

  • They say it's cause he's been deaf in one ear since he was a kid. He kinda speaks to that ear.

  • @relimes i believe he suffered a stroke

  • this is great! thanks.

  • someone please re post this clip in better quality and the complete interview if they have it. thanks

  • Oh Hell this was just 3 days before John Lennon got shot.

  • Dennis carried alot of baggage with him through his short life, but he always had a heart of gold!!! GOD ALWAYS LOVE & BLESS HIM!

  • What the hell is wrong with Dennis here?

  • It was too early in the day for an interview. :)

  • Hey Dennis, you rule!! Wherever you may be, God bless you!! Still my idol...

  • Despite the fact that Dennis may be drunk or whatever, he still points out that if it wasn't for Brian, none of them would even be sitting there. Dennis had great respect for his brother Brian. Too bad Mike never felt that way.

  • @cashfan1 ehrm what? Mike always knew Brian was the most important member of the band. fuck too here again!?

  • Feel so sorry for dennis.. That was a cry for help :(

  • This is my favorite and most telling beach boy interview.

Brian is probably the only performer that can compose music and crack jokes while medicated to the gills.

  • With all due respect to Denny he looks like he is either high or drunk. He one of my heros and I don't mean to be rude or anything but it looks like it.

  • Of course he is! He could barely talk. It´s like watching a train wreck..that´s the reason this interview is relevant. I love Dennys too, but this is a sample of his dark days.

  • I think he felt a ton of guilt over the Manson Murders, either feeling responsible, or feeling like he escaped death and didn't deserve to live.

  • Wow- that's really something right there. A good thing Carl stepped up to the plate when Dennis bailed.

  • I felt relieved when their manager showed up and took over, b/c this is uncomfortable to watch. You can just feel the tension.

  • Why did they let Dennis on??03:01..lol..3:02..Stare of death

  • dennis is so stoned.

    sad.

  • He's not stoned, he's drunk.

  • Probobly coked up too

  • I can't believe she went to Dennis with the first question!

  • Haha - Yeah, it almost seemed cruel.

  • Mike Love looks like he's absolutely SEETHING on the inside... good thing he's got the Brian/Carl buffer zone.

  • Poor Carl. Between baked Dennis, demented Brian, rambling bore Mike Love, & mute hobbit Al Jardine, he looks like a special ed teacher whos taken his especially difficult class out for a field trip. Fortunately that David Hasselhoff-looking manager guy saves the day.

  • Fucking funny! Exactly right. You can imagine them after as the bus goes past Brian staring out the window and Dennis having an alcohol induced fit. Mike love rocking back and forth in his seat saying "Mike is love, Mike is love" and Carl "you can drop me off here driver.

  • This one of the most hilarious comments I've ever seen on YouTube. Thumbs up.

  • @MISTAHgoodnight Your comment was so funny. Very descriptive. I think their faces were sour because of the state Dennis was in. ( a bit of an embarrassment) I thought Brian was going to burst, when Dennis said they don't play their records, "they go to bed early" Mike Love just loves the sound of his own voice.

  • @MISTAHgoodnight Hilarious but true! Poor Carl always was the grounded one, trapped between all those flamboyant personalities (except maybe "mute Hobbit" Al Jardine :)

I, too, was glad that the David Hasselhoff-looking manager saved the day. Thanks for the laugh.

  • Wel wel well mr. goodnight sleep tight! Because all o'them are GREAT I'm sad dennis took a lot of drugs during this period and drowned but the beach boys as a whole are great.

  • @MISTAHgoodnight too funny

  • I'm a recovering Alcoholic and musician!

  • This was a common revolving cycle for Dennis. People (fans) were encouraging him to be the guy he was....How was he ever going to get clean if that kind of pressure and expectation was put on him? I may get hate mail...But I love Dennis and I am simply highlighting the psychosis of booze!

  • no hate mail from me! Dennis was/is so vastly underrated. have you heard the recently re-released and remastered Pacific Ocean Blue? it's dennis' masterpiece.

  • Yes I got it....It is better than Brian in a lot of ways. A total brilliant album. Takes you on a journey!

  • Drink and get wasted...Feel self-pity and then enjoy expressing those feelings through song writing. Gain adulation from those songs feel a kind of attention from people and again feel self pity as those fans have made it almost enjoyable to feel self-pity . Where are we now? Oh yes back to "Drink and get wasted"

  • Ah he had fun...Call it sad or whatever but Dennis was never the type of person to watch a movie and eat a pizza "BORING!" More fun to get blasted and then survive to do it again. Fantastic songwriter but even songwriting is no fun (to Dennis) unless there is a supply if stimulants available to fuel the self-pity that is needed to write the songs he did...I'm saying as a psychological fact.

  • haha, you kiddin, that's the funniest most awesome thing i've ever seen!!! Dennis is the MAN!

  • tragic. this looks like alcohol abuse to me... needs a crutch to prop his head on... sad how much strife these guys have endured. but they kept slugging and made some fantastic music.

  • What's sad is that you couldn't spoof this any better. Poor Carl looks like the peacekeeper & the lone legitimate media voice of the band whilst disturbed at Dennis' behavior here. Brian actually looks pretty together here (considering).

  • dennis was really fucked up! booze or drugs? you name it! a real shame!

  • were's bruce at??

  • Yes,DRUGS are EVIL,simple, look what they do to humans.

The parisites that make and deal the drugs are assholes,Sadly these guys go to partys with the parisites that take and sell drugs,The assholes should be shot

  • gimme a break, drugs are fuckin fun... and anyone who says they aren't is obviously a nancy-reagan-brainwashed right wing fool. LSD!!! MUSHROOMS!!! PEYOTE!!! party time, fools...

  • it's really sad, uncomfortable, and embarassing as a beach boys fan to see dennis like this on national television. it's a shame he didnt get help! just goes to show how dysfunctional this family was.

  • Why did they insist on putting a wasted D. Wilson on Tv?

  • I like the fact that Joan called on Dennis first. She obviously knew he was wasted but that's the point - it's an entertainment show. Those kind of interviews make for good publicity and higher ratings. Look how much attention was paid to Lauer's interview with Cruise a few years ago. If you don't want to look like a fool, don't get wasted and go on TV (especially at 7:00am!!). Brian doesn't exactly seem clear-headed either.

  • Jksonny: Well said

  • I basically became a Beach Boys fan one week ago, after watching the Smile documentary and concert. I don't know much about them yet, but I get the impression that Mike was a total schmuck. Even when I showed a YouTube clip of a 1964 concert to my girlfriend, she said "that lead singer looks like a creepy old man."

  • @ 4:20 when brian says..."most of it, yeah, i think mike can answer that better then i do" ! Is that a slap on the face on national tv or what ? LOL, mr love, you are targeted my man.

  • Brian: 'they play our records on theyre record players...; Dennis: "or they goto bed early!!!" hahah RIP denny always missed

  • This interviewer really pisses me off.She could see that Dennis was in a bad state,so she tries to corner him and expose his weakness

  • Joan Lunden isn't trying to "corner him and expose his weakness."

She's not that type of interviewer.

It's clear that she's assuming that Dennis is just sleepy or groggy due to the early West Coast time.

    "Dennis, we keeping you awake?"

The time displayed is 8:47 am in New York; which means it's 5:47 in L.A.

  • he was fucked up on booze or drugs, get real!

  • I love & adore Brian to the 10th power and no doubt he's a musical genius and was the creative force behind the band for years, but it's sad that his biggest supporter in the BBs never got the recognition he deserved for the talented "genius" he was in his own right & what he contributed to the band. Maybe he wouldn't have been in the "state" he was in there had he been shown a little bit of the love he that he was showing Brian. Carl was way gifted too and doesn't get credit. RIP Denny & Carl

  • Poor Dennis. What a lovely guy !! Such a waste of such a talented man.

He should have had help and he would still be here now.

    You are missed Denny !

  • FUCK YOU MIKE LOVE!!!! and Brian has given so much - everybody who dwells on the bad and likes to play critic with no gratitude or talent for themselves... you suck and should go see the Mike Love show... I mean.. the so called Beach Boys... I will be at the BW show! Mike Love has so much interest in the fact that they are still together and acts like its a good thing because he has no talent of his own. Brian would have been better off if he could have been left alone by love. F U MIKE LOVE!

  • this is so sad...while drugs may have helped inspire them to write music (which is ambiguous, since people write music, not drugs) it also wrecked them. it is tragic. to have brought such joy in music to so many people and yet to be in this state makes them heroes. long live the BEACH BOYS!!

  • Woah @ 3:00!

  • I know it's 1980 and all but - jesus - Mike looks like the worst kind of middle class white pimp on earth!

    R.I.P. Dennis. Goota love him!

  • Mike Love sucks dick

  • Yeah, I always had thought that too...........

  • OMG Dennis. And what a bitch for starting off with him, he obviously looked completely out of it. Carl looks extremely annoyed.

  • She def did that on purpose, she could see what state he was in- Bitch

  • I think they all find it funny.

I love how AL gives Mike a look off oh u dickhead during the interview.

  • dennis is on heroin in this clip. no doubt about it

  • Sadly. :( These great stars, we think, have everything: Girls, monye, fame, fortune, yet they are so unhappy.

  • Indeed. Whatever happened to "Oh, Dennis is staying home cause he's 'exhausted from touring'."?

  • Yeah, he is totally out of it but you have to love him and respect that he is the one who is aware enough to pipe in at 6 minutes and tell it like it is! Despite what he is on... I wish that support came out more often for Brian throughout... because ML sucks!

  • Wow this was.... wow. Brian was totally zoned out. Dennis was either stoned or drunk or both out of his mind. Mike was talking out of his ego. Carl was probably the only level headed one here. I felt bad for him and Al the most because he knew he was the only Wilson brother who was responsible and was the only one who was mentally self aware enough to see how embarrassing that interview was. I think he was totally pissed off at Dennis here. I still love this band though.

  • i agree with you for the most part, but let's not kid ourselves, Carl had an enormous cocaine problem himself. he did usually appear to be the sane one, but he grew up in the same hell that was the Wilson home. those boys were the victims of child abuse. all three of them were damaged goods, who also happened to be three of the most talented artists of the 20th century. RIP Carl and Dennis

  • Carl had been over with the cocaine problem for a couple years at this point

  • It looks like Dennis is "Jonesing" pretty bad.

  • mike is such a phony i met him and he just works for the money nt the love of the group.

  • Carl looks incredibly annoyed at Dennis, haha. Ahh, the interview wasn't too bad but I don't think she asked Al a single question..

  • I was really happy to hear Dennis speak up about Brian around 6:15

  • Despite being totally out of it, he still managed to stick up for Brian.

This would be funny if Dennis had pulled out of this period instead of getting worse and dying :(

  • Carl looked like he just wanted to strangle Dennis!.Poor Loan Lunden.

I'm not a fan of Mike Love

  • poor joan lunden? Its obvious that bitch purposelu asked dennis the first question. Carl and the rest of the guys should have tied dennis up backstage

  • I wish DW could have cleaned himself up. Musically, he too had the gift.

  • Mike's wearing the same coat he wore in the Knebworth concert.

  • Dennis is pretty wasted here.

  • Cool song! By the Musical God named BRIAN WILSON!!!! Too bad Mike Love now inisists he is the Beach Boys and continues to go around singing Wilsons songs... Now that Carl and Dennis Wilson are dead. He can sing them all and claim he co-wrote it, hahaha what a joke! What a good strategy. What a "talented" person.

  • Thanks God that they made better music than giving interviews!

  • Wow, Dennis is really out of it.

  • Dennis show's a drug addict in hid prime, but he is the ONLY beach Boy to ever surf.

  • i think what makes historic bands historic is their amazing work on stage and their fucked up antics off stage. that's why i love this clip!

  • im surprised they let dennis on tv in that state! no wonder carl left after that period, how sad is that and al is just sitting there probably thinking shit what next!

  • I love Brian's response to what he listens to- dead pan. I love you Brian!!!

  • highlight of the interview for me. I listen to a record called "Be My Baby...by the Ronnettes" lol

  • Jerry Schilling wasn't he with Elvis?

  • Yeah, he was one of Elvis' best friends since the 50s. He later became Carl Wilson's Manager and the Beach Boys' manager. His wife Myrna Smith (of Elvis' background group "Sweet inspirations") co-wrote Carl's soloalbums with him.

  • oh, that's right! she co-wrote "Heaven", one of Carl's most beautiful songs.

  • Dennis is dead. Have some f*cking respect!

  • nerdescuinapunk is officially Mike Love's favourite Youtube poster

  • It's probably Mike Love himself.

  • Dennis your the best!!!

  • According to the book I am reading at the moment, Heroes and Villains (The True Story Of The Beach Boys),Dennis was going through a rough time of Drugs and alcoholism...he tried rehab a few times...was begged to go by the other band members...but he would always walk out after one day...he really needed help badly...so sad..

  • What do you think Dennis was on?

    Never saw this before, cool!

  • a couch

  • How Pathetic. The footage of Dennis should be used in an anti-drug campaign. Talk about mind-altering!

  • Wow, Dennis was screwed up.

  • wasn't lennon shot that week? mann, pathetic..

  • Has it occured to anybody else that their manager looks like David Hasselhoff?

  • Too bad that it was Mike that wanted to keep the same Surf style music and not as much the fans

  • There are so many things wrong with this footage. Number one--everyone is on cocaine or heroin, their manager is wasted. Dennis..ive never seen a public appearance this gone lol dennis "this abc?"..wtf? haha "hows david"? are you fucking kidding me. Brian is zonked brian -"they like hard rock, barbara streisand"...geez
