Ugh, gives me the shivers. Hatching is the most painful experience for a bird because it causes physical pain when the flesh tears away from the inside of the egg. All the arteries and stuff.... Poor thing :(

@crispychickenpro According to my Science Encyclopedia It Shows A Demonstration How The Egg Hatches And The Only Thing Thats In The Egg Is The Chick And The Yolk Which The Chick Feeds On For 3 Weeks (21 days) So It Probably Didnt eat the All Of The Yolk Before It Was Born And The Yolk Is Connected To The Cord To Tell The Truth I Dont Know HOW To Remove The Cord Because Im Only 14. Next Time This Ever Happens I Suggest You Go To Veterinarian Or Whatever. I Hope This Information Was Helpful.

If you go to the hatchery you got your hens from, chances are they would sell you hatching eggs. Then you would just stick them under a broody hen, & she would hatch them exactly as if they were her own.

You do know how to tell if they are broody?

A big broody hen, like a Barred Rock, can easily handle 16-18 eggs.

Only problem is you get 50% roosters & then you have to do something with them.

Fantastic stuff! I can easily understand why it would be so tempting to 'help' the chick out the egg but according to Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall you're not meant to do that. I think the reason for this is so the chick can develop their strength.

I've hatched my own hens ever since I was 7, and raised them by hand too. I've had everything from none hatching in clutches of 20 to a set of twins hatching!

Can anyone shed light on the twins? I've never known this before last year, and they were not identical twins so they hadn't split from one embryo early on. Has anyone else had this?
