The fact is there will be no change in mascots until there is scientific evidence that this moral, ethical issue is harmful to our children. I say to that: okay, you don't listen to us. Fine.
I am not waiting around for people to find a moral compass in scientific facts. I am purposing to start a support group for youth that have been victims of racism. If you sports fans can't see these mascots as what I call "Gateway Racism" your problem.
LOL seriously... ok hannity I'm offended by white fat americans who are too lazy to get off the couch, unless it means getting a bigmac from Mcdonalds. I mean seriously your all obese, and half of you don't work wtf... seriously? And your women are gross hows that sound.

@hannityforpres What about "Patriots"??? I'm white, I don't get offended by New England and the many of other schools and teams that use that mascot. It's a symbol of pride. That's what I took of it so I agree with you. Though I may have worded it different
Thank you for posing the question. And yes, they should' be eliminated. They are extremely insulting. The recent black hawk win in chicago is only going to justify them even more. A new generation will be influenced by this humiliating entity and the years of hard work will have to start over again in educating people about mascots.
@1980vince I'm not one to argue about this. However, "Colonel Reb" (Ole Miss.), Fighting Irish (Notre Dame), Fighting Scots (Monmouth College), "Purdue Pete" (Purdue), New York Yankees which a Yankee is someone that fought for the north in the Civil War. That included many races. "Rowdy" (Dallas Cowboys) and my old high school was the Union Yankees, a 7 ft. tall Civil War Soldier. Now, take a good hard look at "Rowdy", tell me that white people are filled with shame. I like Rowdy, no shame.
i think native american mascots show the proud and honerable spirit that tends to run through nativer american tribes and i dont think that is a bad thing.
@Y2jandMannyR4life Yes , i agree. I am Cherokee and black. I think it is a honor to have a team. I have seen many other Natives at Pow Wows that like the Redskins/ Braves and so on. i like the Redskins. Also it is to remember a people. If they were no Native teams. Some how Natives would be forgotten. Only mostly in history books and on T.V.

when they are horribly portrayed in a mocking sense like Cleavland's logo, then it is not allowable, but Illinois and Florida State honor their tradition in a very respectable way.
All so callled native american mascots should be changed. Or here's another solution. In our tribal colleges we should change our mascots to "The Niggers", "White Trash", "The Wet Backs" or how about "The Zipperheads"... How does that sound to some of you folks that have Native mascots??
@xTheDanMan Reskins : mean North American Indian in the dictionary. Not that bad. And i have seen other Native people that like the team. And i am 1/8 Cherokee too. And i love the team. Its all what you make it.
I don't think we should change all of them. UND Fighting Sioux's name and logo are very respectful.(The logo in this vid is not the current one. Look it up on google.) The baseball team the Indians name is ok, but thier logo is terribly racist and should be changed. Even though it is supposed to be from a Looney Tunes cartoon.
I like it. At least where being recognized. I'm proud of being a Jicarilla Apache. Just like the Shiprock Chieftains, Shiprock Warriors which are schools from Shiprock, New Mexico. Window Rock, Arizona is the Scouts.
Just like the Windriver basketball team their called Chieftains.

One of the Lakota or Navajo reservations should start an NFL team called the Palefaces and have a white stereotype as their mascot and see how THEY like it.
Actually, there is/was a Native American high school out west somewhere that had as their mascot the Fighting Whities. They've sold tons of T-shirst and stuff--mostly to "palefaces." Good luck with this lame line of "reasoning."
For what it's worth, it probably would be better for the University of Illinois to become the Railsplitters and have a white male with a rifle over one shoulder and an axe in the other., NO more references to Indians. Who wants to be like THEM anyway?
The University of Illinois was Chief Illiwenek was it not? (I don't watch sports). If so, I don't see Chief Illiwenek as offensive. It was a more realistic and dignified depiction unlike the Atlanta Braves and didn't use a racial slur like Washington Redskins. And by "THEY" I meant the NFL. I read over my comment and noticed it was poorly worded.
i dont know why they call us savages the white bpeople where the ones who came on our land and killed our food for fun + raped our woman + killed + destroyed and burned our homes WHITE PEOPLE are the SAVAGES...............NATIVE PRIDE by EAGLEBEAR

i think there are several native american mascots that can be considered insulting, but the florida state mascot (the seminoles aka 'chief osceola') is an interesting scenario. as an fsu student, the controversy hits home. what's interesting is the overwhelming amount of support the school currently receives from the seminole tribe for using the mascot. in fact, the tribe annually creates and donates the clothing worn by the 'chief osceola' during football games.
i would prefer a longer video because i had difficulty seeing all the pictures you (no doubt) took so much trouble to gather. nonetheless, thank you for posting this.
Here are some reasons that I think indian mascots are great for sports. A warrior is a strong figure and shows courage and stregth to fight. Cheifs are great leaders. Tomahawks, spears, bows, and arrows were used by Native Americans but were powerful weapons and not only used by Indians. A tribe is like a team, always sticking together no matter what and helping each other out in war. So I think Indian mascots are powerful and you can see why they make good symbols for teams and sports.
what you are saying makes sense when applied to a pack of predatory animals as well. they are stronger together, and powerful. the difference is that animals do not ask for your respect. to mock native culture has nothing to do with the power of that culture. it only reinforces the beliefs and stereotypes that hurt native people.
please consider this: we still exist, and still have a voice to respond to your thoughtless words with (even though some people may choose to ignore it).

Virtually the only image that nonnative children view of Native people are of the mascots, most children assume that Native people are dead or were warlike people. This stereotype diminishes the Native culture and is hurtful to many Native people.
Most teams choose indians (sorry native americans) as mascots because they are looking for a STRONG symbol to represent their school or team. If i wanted I could be offended by any team that was the loggers or even the fighting irish because i'm white and irish and my dads a logger. Sorry that some are offended by the fact that people appreciate natives strength.
And as long as some tribes choose not to be offended by such, it shouldn't be a big deal.
Re "give back the cloths you are wearing, the computer you type these messages on, your cd player, your home, everything you own":
Fol2005 doesn't understand the deal he's proposing. Not only would he have to give up half the food he eats, he'd have to give up HIS home and land. After he went back wherever he came from, he could enjoy his computer and CD player. Meanwhile, Indians would enjoy America's vast beauty and its vast bounty of natural resources: gold, oil, timber, crops, etc.
I know you posted that comment a year ago but I'd like to add that Fol2005 would not have the luxury of a computer or a CD. Whenever anyone makes that argument that non-whites revert back to their states as they were in pre-colonial or pre-contact eras, then whites would have to give up all these modern conveniences as well since they were produced AFTER colonial contact. That means buckled shoes, wooden or stone housing for all... unless they want to believe they all descend from royalty.
Attendees at "Native Voices," a recent conference sponsored by BNP Media and the National Museum of the American Indian, Smithsonian Institute, were told the greatest threat to Native America was our image among non-Indians, elected officials and policy makers.
We memorialize ferocious beasts—lions and tigers and bears—as sports teams. And in reality, we shoot them, cage them, or wipe out their habitats because they're an obstacle to civilization. We memorialize "savage" Indians for the same reason: because we, the full-fledged people of destiny, are better than them, the one-dimensional warrior losers.
I dont care what you have dude its a god damn mascot like who cares the indians or (Native Americans) because i dont want to offend you! But they made a basketball team called the Fighting Whites and well..... NOBODY CARES.
Actually, it is a big deal. How would you like it if someone stole your trailer? And by the way, I have a dual Ph.D. and two Masters Degrees. I know what I am talking about.
It is grossly offensive. It is a colonial and plantation mentality perpetuating manifest destiny. The Whties ran out of land to steal, so they steal the only thing we have left: our dignity.
Do you understand that sports teams try to think of names they can be proud of when considering nicknames. They are honoring Native Americans, not bashing them. If they thought the name was a mockery they would have never chosen it. Look up Chief Illiniwek and tell me if these people are proud of their mascot.
You know what a good honor would be? Give us back the land that was stolen, apologize (and mean it) for over 500 years of genocide and racism. Do you understand that a chief is not a political figure but a religious one? A chief to an Indian is akin to the Pope for Catholics. I do not see any cheerleaders jumping around in papal attire "honoring" the Pope. You look up some authentic powwow footage and compare the two. They are nothing alike. Illiniwek is a sacrilege.
okay but before we apologize- give back the cloths you are wearing, the computer you type these messages on, your cd player, your home, everything you own.
you really want to go back to the lifestyle of you ancestors? or don't you want to admit we have flourished here better than you ever could have.
No. Had it not been for the American Indians the Yonegs (Whites) would never had survived. So before you force us to thank you for "improving" our lives, why don't you thank us for saving yours.
I enjoy blue corn comics a lot, my AP English hs senior paper was on portrayals of Tiger Lily and her tribe from the four popular versions (original text, Disney film, the musical, and the 2004 film). (I used the different portrayals to then argue that Tiger Lily is a necessary feminist character.)
only respect men get is self respect like the apache not this gvt they protect the bonesmen or bring honor to apache by naming death in the air apache helicopter this is my country.
i do believe the cartoon-like mascots are not appropriate, but if a school's mascot is given the official seal of the Cherokee Nation, for representing Indian Values,(Honor,Pride&Tradition),then the school should be allowed to keep it!!example: look up Port Neches-Groves High School on Wikipedia
True, some mascots are worse than others. But with your chief logo, a giant teepee on the field, fans in war paint, and tom-tom music on your website, I'd say your school's emblems are stereotypical.
According to Wikipedia, "In 1980, Port Neches-Groves High School was presented the official seal of the Cherokee Nation." That was before most people were sensitized to the mascot issue. It would be interesting to see what Cherokees and other Indians say about your school today.

i do believe the cartoon-like mascots are not appropriate, but if a school's mascot is given the official seal of the Cherokee Nation, for representing Indian Values,(Honor,Pride&Tradition),then the school should be allowed to keep it!!example: look up Port Neches-Groves High School on Wikipedia
