Why sell some encoding software when it can be done for free, I use a program called a Tube catcher before I download or even encode a film I set it to MP4 format go in the settings set them all in to FULL HD then I encode a duth movie takes about 3 hours to convert, once its been encoded the movie comes out sooooo clear its allmost in blue ray, dont cost me a penny to do that
Dude...You have got to be kidding me right? It took that device 4 mnutes to encode a 5 minute video?...LOL...Where is the advantage on this? It is encoding in "real time". My Quad Core Q9400, without Elgato, encodes a full DVD movie to Divx format in exactly 23 minutes!!!!!!!!...For $99.00 I think that Elgato device is useless if it encodes at that speed.
@MrYouwatchthis Drag a video into the window, select YouTube or YouTube HD as the format. The click the little 'You' icon, then Account appears where you can add and remove accounts.
i have a sony hdr-cx550v. and the files are like some kind of avchd file with MTS. and then numbers. from the stream folder. is can that be converted to mpeg file to?
What's the performance gain? That's the most important aspect of this device that costs as much as £130. e.g. for a standard definition home movie recording, what is the speed up factor the device gives you over the standard iMovie export? 2x, 3x, 5x??? Without this it's difficult to weigh up the device before buying.
Also, the extension lead is for MacBook's. The device when plugged in obstructs the neighbouring ports.
Great review, thanks! Clever, to use hardware for encoding video!
P.S I have a question of how you hid all the icons on your desktop, EXCEPT for the video file. I've seen programs which can hide your desktop, but they don't let you leave specific files!
would this be good for converting blurays recorded through a HD PVR in eye tv

No trick, I just zoomed into the action with Final Cut Express when editing the video. My icons are still there just out of sight.

Yeah, some speed tests would be nice. I'm guessing too, you have to use the Elgato utility?
wwwinsanelygreatmac 2 years ago
use encode the video and then exit it with whatever

I've been looking for a good review for this. Thanks. Always good reviews. As always.

Sounds like a neat idea but USB?! USB is dog slow!
Danny77uk 2 years ago
Doesn't matter. Compression is highly processor intensive, it would have to be some big iron to bottle neck on USB 2.0.

what camera do u use to make ur videos?
macfan9002 2 years ago
Sony HDR-HC7 for the main reviews. Screenflow for the screencast sections. Any news snippets are usually done with the iMac iSight camera.

This is a really good idea. Video encoding is a hassle.

Nice review. Could use some speed comparisons with the Elgato and without it.
